We Find Our Roots In Christ
Tomorrow we will be heading to New Zealand
to spend a little over 2 weeks with family. We will
also visit native Maori land directly connected to our
family! Some might say we will get back to our roots.
However, our family finds our roots in Christ.
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust
is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends
out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat
comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in
the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit”
(Jeremiah 17:7-8).
I was walking on a lakeside and noticed a huge
fallen oak with a 3-foot section of root broken off. I
noticed, because there were three large rocks encased
in the section. That tree sent its roots to where the water
was. That tree was simply fulfilling its purpose as it
“sent out its roots by the stream.”
Did it bargain for the rocks? Did it plan for
the challenges it would face as it sought to fulfill its
resolve? The root was stopped short on its journey 3
times, but what is fascinating is the contortion of time
and space as it encapsulated the rocky trials, bypass-
ing them, and making them a part of its triumph. The
three rocks illustrate how suffering sometimes comes in
threes. How will you face trials when they come? Will
your character be broken, or will it be shaped?
Paul would call this process of trials and
overcoming as character building, as he did to the
Roman Christians:
“Through Him we have also obtained access by
faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice
in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we
rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering
produces endurance, and endurance produces
character… (Romans 5:2-4).
May we recognize that on our journey to the
shores of Heaven, we will face obstacles that will seek
to stop us dead in our tracks. May we not lose heart!
May we hold to the hope that compels us onward. Verse
six gives us the source of our hope.
“For while we were still weak, at the right time
Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6).
Jesus is our hope and He died on a tree so we could find
our life in Him. There were not three rocks in that tree
but three nails. They were placed there so we could find
our roots in Christ.
