Only One Thing
Life is complicated. The appropriate balance
between work, family, recreation, and church can be difficult
to achieve and maintain. Like a continuous game of Tetris,
we expend constant energy trying to fit all these pieces of
our lives into our weekly schedules. Amidst the chaos of this
routine balancing act, what is important can often get lost
in the hustle and bustle of our lives. The struggle to keep
priorities in their proper order in the midst of our busy lives
is nothing new.
In Luke 10: 40, Martha, the sister of Mary, was busy
making preparations for Jesus, while Mary was sitting at
the feet of Jesus listening to His Word (Lk. 10:39). Martha
expressed her frustration to Jesus that she alone was doing
all the work, and implored Jesus to tell Mary to help her.
Jesus’ response to Martha is both surprising and
enlightening:
“Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so
many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has
chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from
her.” – Lk. 10:41-42
Martha was a busy person. She cared about keeping
her hands busy and serving the Lord. Can anyone reasonably
criticize her for serving the Lord?! Certainly not. And that
doesn’t appear to be Jesus’ criticism either. So what was
the problem? The problem wasn’t what Martha was doing,
the problem was Martha’s priorities. Listening to Jesus was
Mary’s first priority, while it simply was not for Martha.
Jesus explained to Martha that her priorities were out of
order. “Only one thing is necessary,” Jesus explained. And
that one thing is what Mary was doing: Listening to Jesus.
When we compare our busy lives with the busy
mentality of Martha, we must ask ourselves, how often do
we stop our daily routines to sit at the feet of Jesus to listen
to His Word? Even in our zeal to serve the Lord, we may
do so at the expense of not spending time in His Word. And
what a tragedy that is, because that is the one thing that is
necessary. Don’t mistake Jesus’ Words for suggesting that
work is not important. Too many Christians treat their jobs
as secular and their time at church as religious. But the truth
is, whether at work or church, all of it is necessary service
to Christ if we do it honorably in his name (Col. 3:23-24).
But whether it is the work we do at our jobs or the work we
do for the kingdom of God, we must never allow it to get in
the way of spending daily time with Jesus in His Word.
Like Martha, the worries, routine, and business of this life
can also stop us from growing spiritually. They can weigh
us down and prevent us from being ready for judgment day
(Lk. 21:34). They can prevent us from bearing fruit for God
(Lk. 8:14). But when we take time to listen to Jesus’ and
God’s Word, we grow stronger spiritually and stronger in our
salvation (1 Pet. 2:2). So sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to
His Word. Make time in His Word the priority of your daily
schedule. It is the one thing that is necessary. ~JH

Thank You
Dear Deerfoot Church of Christ Family,
It was so very good to hear from many of you and to receive all
the warm thank you cards for our attendance to your Vacation
Bible School.
Our entire family really had a wonderful time at the
services! Your members were so kind and welcoming, and it
made our visit very pleasurable, indeed! We do
intend to visit one of your Bible Studies in the near
future, but just wanted to take this opportunity to thank each
and every one of you for your generous Christian
hospitality!! Everyone was so lovely, and the Fruit of the Spirit
was sprouting out all over!!
May the Lord bless you and keep you all, is our prayer!
Yours in The Battle,
The Bates Family
