For Your Own Good
“Now this is for your own good…” Dreaded words. For most of us when we were
young, these words preceded a swift hand, belt, or switch to our hindquarters. “There ain’t
nothing good about this!” we would often think. For most of us, as we got older, we
learned the reasons behind the rules, discipline, and punishment that we were given as
children. It was usually simple rules that prevented a negative cause and effect. Don’t
touch the stove, the fan, the electrical outlet, etc. No recreation until you get your
homework done, don’t stay out past 10 o’clock, etc. It was mostly common sense.
But even as adults, humans still tend to disdain some rules – mostly the ones we
don’t agree with or like. And ironically, adulthood is often used as a status that somehow
entitles adults to shirk some of the basic wisdom and rules that we learned as children. “I
can do what I want, I’m an adult!” Strangely enough, what follows this statement is
usually a childish and unintelligent decision made in the name of adulthood! Adults can
become so insistent on their own rights that they completely lose sight of why certain rules
exist in the first place – just like children.
And when it comes to God’s moral rules for humanity, humans have often rebelled
against them like stubborn children, failing to understand why God gave us moral rules in
the first place. God has always been clear as to why He has given humanity moral rules
and commands: “So the Lord commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord
our God for our good always and for our survival, as it is today” (Deut. 6:24). God’s
rules, commands, and morality for us has always been for our good, not out of spite or
useless restriction.
When humans ignore or disobey God’s moral rules, they injure themselves by their
own hands (Prov. 8:36), like a child that touches a hot stove. On one occasion when Israel
was disobeying God’s moral law, God asked them “Why are you doing great harm to
yourselves…?” (Jer. 44:7). Sometimes God is simply perplexed as to why we pursue our
own harm by rejecting His moral rules. He gives us rules and guidance to be successful,
righteous, and avoid self-harm, and like children, mankind often discards His rules though
they are our very key safety, salvation, joy, and the protection of others.
When humanity simply asks the question, what would the world be like without
adultery, revenge, stealing, lying, drunkenness, envy, greed, and all the other things God
prohibits, then they can arrive to the simplest and yet most profound answer: It would be a
harmonious and problem free world. Perfect human relations and perfect relations with
God. God’s character and rules can change the world for the better in the present and gives
us eternal life in the future. As it says in 1 Tim. 4:8, “…godliness is profitable for all
things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”
So let us always be receptive and obedient to God’s loving and compassion com-
mands, and encourage others to understand that God has rules for our own good, and be-
cause He is good.
“Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall
we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? For they disciplined us for
a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may
share His holiness” (Heb. 12:9-10).

Dear Church Family,
It is humbling and amazing to know so many
acts of kindness have been made for us
during my recovery. There was a food and
prayer chain set up for us, and it was so
appreciated. The cards, telephone calls, and
text messages were so encouraging. Flowers
were sent and the wonderful food that came
to our house and the visits. The sweet
children sent notes and cards, how precious is
that? I am grateful that the people that
prepare and deliver the meals on Thursdays
have truly been appreciated. I am so blessed
to be a member of the church family.
Lovingly,
Sue Adams and Amy Stark
