Heavy Laden
The other day I loaded a riding lawn mower onto my
5x10’ tilt trailer. As I drove up those wooden slats, the
rear tires fell through the wood floor! The trailer was too
heavy laden.
The weight exceeded the limit those old boards could
take, and it just snapped! It gave in. It crumbled under
the pressure. For almost a decade that trailer has moved
yard waste, mowers, scrap metal, pea gravel, mulch,
and front-end loads of dirt. It’s been a good dependable
work horse, but seasons of weathering the storms just
took their toll.
We go through seasons of weather as well. How do we
cope with the pressure? Is there a last straw that breaks
the camel’s back?
This morning I was reminded of a powerful passage of
scripture on my Bible app which inspired this article:
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I
will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
The idea of rest to those heavy laden with care is that it
is the answer to the problem of the pressure in the first
place. Jesus fulfills the need by taking the pressure and
lifting it off of our shoulders. The weight and sin that
once clung to us was placed on Him as He went to the
cross. We are now indebted to Him for removing the
burden that broke us. We carry a renewed purpose!
I was able to use new lumber and repair the trailer. It has
now been fixed to work again.
Through Jesus, we have been repaired to be able to
work again as well. Jesus explains that through Him, we
are free from sin to take on a new burden.
Jesus said,
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am
gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your
souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light”
(Matthew 11:29-30).
We have a light burden to serve Him. But we realize that
Jesus takes the heavy lifting, so we do not break. We do
not crumble under the pressure.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud
of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin
which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance
the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the
founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that
was set before him endured the cross, despising the
shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of
God” (Hebrews 12:1-2).
Are you looking to Jesus? Have you handed Him what
left you heavy laden?
