The present is a gift. Will you open it?
With the use of this title I’m reminded of the favorite passage of our dear sweet
Freida Gallagher. “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in
it” (Psalm 118:24). This moment is a present, and the present is a gift.
When we do not see the special nature of the present, we may take it for granted
and be lost in thought about a different time. How often do we spend our days thinking
about our past?
Maybe things we should have done differently?
As we discuss reaching the lost we can literally beat ourselves up over missed
opportunities in our past. The irony is that this type of thought routine affects the decisions
we make in the “now.” It is a vicious cycle that can steal the moments we are granted. We
cannot change the past. We cannot go back in time. Yet our mind can relive that moment
over and over as if we were there all over again.
God Himself gave this advice to an angry Cain after his offering was not accepted
and his brother Abel’s offering was.
“The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you
do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door.
Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it” (Genesis 4:6,7).
Notice God did not tell Cain, “You should not have done that!” He did not say,
“why couldn’t you have been more like your brother?” He tells him to “do” well as sin’s
desire (Satan’s) was for him to not “do” well. He decided to dwell on the past so much that
he killed his brother over it (Genesis 4:8).
Time can also be spent focused on good memories. The “golden years” can serve to
tarnish the present moment that is spent longing for what once was. Both perspectives can
choke out our existence for what we are granted. This congregation had purpose and
thrived in personal Bible studies. The practices of meeting at the building to then go out
and study have not been done in recent years. This can lead to discouragement or it can be
a reminder that our present can be more. Our gift of now can be used for God and for His
kingdom!
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm
118:24). Today is a present, and the present is a gift. Will you open it?

Announcement from the Elders
By now everyone should be aware of the new,
more infectious strain of Covid-19 that is
affecting our nation. As we strive to worship
together, the elders encourage each of us to do
what we know to do to protect not only ourselves
from this new strain of virus, but to protect our
brothers and sisters who are at risk of contracting
the virus.
Thank you
Thank you all for the many prayers,
thoughts, food, cards and visits that
you all have done. Keep us all in
your thoughts and prayers that we
may recover soon! We love y’all and
hope to come back soon.
