Greetings to All!
Friendly people are likable. People who are deemed
likable are often known to be very friendly. You
often find these people greeting others left and right and
expressing friendliness. Friendliness often appears to be
natural to some people. “He’s just a friendly person.”
“That’s the way she is.” But make no mistake.
Expressing friendliness, whether it is more natural or
not, takes intentional effort. It doesn’t just happen for
anyone. Not everyone is outgoing, and not everyone has
to be. But everyone can express and grow in
friendliness.
Responding to friendliness is easier than initiating
friendliness. We all often readily welcome those
who greet us with a smile and ask us questions about
ourselves with sincere interest. They put out the effort,
and we respond with ease to their friendliness. For the
world, the extent of their friendliness and love towards
others is often purely responsive towards the love and
friendliness that others express to them. But for
Christians, love and friendliness most go beyond a
responsive reflex. As Jesus taught about greetings and
friendliness…
“…if you love those who love you, what reward do you
have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? If
you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing
than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father
is perfect.” – Matthew 5:46-48
If we are to be like our Father, perfect and complete in
love, we must love and greet more than just those who
love and greet us. We must extend ourselves beyond our
comfort zone and a limited circle of friends. True, it is
impossible to greet everyone single person, whether you
are at church or on the job. But we should all strive to
this standard of greeting and loving beyond those who
do likewise to us. After all, how can we share the gospel
with others if we don’t start with hello? How can we
love our brothers and sisters if we don’t greet them?
God be praised, we are known by many to be a friendly
congregation! But individually, we are all at different
places. Some excel, and others are growing in this. But
regardless of how we are towards others – reserved or
outgoing, we all have room to grow. Whether it is at
church, at work, or in any public place, let this be our
prayer:
“…may the Lord cause… (us)…to increase and abound
in love for one another, and for all people…”
– 1 Thessalonians 3:12
Expressing this love for all, often begins with greeting.
For many, growth in this area starts with just greeting
one person they don’t know. That’s a great place to start!
Some are more gifted than others in this and that’s ok.
But the more we all strive to extend greetings to all, the
more opportunities we will have to share love and the
gospel, and the more like our Father we will become.
