To Be Remembered
The temporary nature of this life produces an interesting
desire: the desire to be remembered. As one grows older,
the importance of one’s legacy in this world increases.
Truly, life on this earth is fleeting (Ecc. 11:10) and is
nothing but a vapor (James 4:14). This being undeniably
true, man has always fought against his impermanence
in this world. The great flood was a fearful demonstra-
tion of mankind’s fragility and mortality. Shortly after,
mankind determined “let us make for ourselves a name”
(Gen. 11:4). But as often as mankind has sought to
build a lasting name and legacy, it has continually been
demonstrated that the majority of people, good or evil,
will be forgotten (Ecc. 2:16).
Nevertheless, people continue to strive to make a name
for themselves that will outlive them. While there is
nothing wrong with wanting to be remembered and to
leave a good legacy behind, this desire can easily be-
come a distraction from the purpose of this life, and of-
ten results in self-focused living. The truth is that wheth-
er we will be remembered or not or have a place in
history is almost completely out of our power. Achieve
great things, and maybe you will be remembered long
after you are gone. But the vast majority of the time,
even the great and the accomplished are quickly forgot-
ten. Precious few in this world have a name that lives
on into future generations. So, if your goal is to have a
name that lasts in this world, you are almost certain to
fail as so many have.
The question we must all ask ourselves is “Am I so
important that my name should be remembered long
after I am gone?” If people remember our names and
our legacy after we are gone, they will derive perhaps
some benefit. A godly example is certainly worth re-
membering. But can our memory or our name save
future generations? Can our legacy give life to all? The
name of Jesus, His legacy, is the only name and lega-
cy that gives salvation and hope to all mankind (Acts
4:12). If we wear His name and make His legacy our
legacy, then whether we are remembered or not on this
earth, we will have spent our short time here sharing
with others the only name and legacy that truly matters.
Though many of us will likely be forgotten in the future,
if we live our lives for the name of God and Jesus, our
names will be remembered by the ones who are worth
being remembered by: God and Jesus (Phil. 4:3). When
we are remembered by God on the last day, we will be
given and wear a much better name than our own: The
name of God Himself (Rev. 22:4). So let us not live life
to be remembered on this earth. Let us live life so that
the world will always remember Jesus, and that we may
be remembered by Him for all eternity.

As one grows older, the importance of one’s legacy in this world increases. Truly, life on this earth is fleeting (Ecc. 11:10) and is nothing but a vapor (James 4:14). This being undeniably true, man has always fought against his impermanence in this world. The great flood was a fearful demonstra- tion of mankind’s fragility and mortality. Shortly after, mankind determined “let us make for ourselves a name” (Gen. 11:4). But as often as mankind has sought to build a lasting name and legacy, it has continually been demonstrated that the majority of people, good or evil, will be forgotten (Ecc. 2:16). Nevertheless, people continue to strive to make a name for themselves that will outlive them. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to be remembered and to leave a good legacy behind, this desire can easily be- come a distraction from the purpose of this life, and of- ten results in self-focused living. The truth is that wheth- er we will be remembered or not or have a place in history is almost completely out of our power. Achieve great things, and maybe you will be remembered long after you are gone. But the vast majority of the time, even the great and the accomplished are quickly forgot- ten. Precious few in this world have a name that lives on into future generations. So, if your goal is to have a name that lasts in this world, you are almost certain to fail as so many have. The question we must all ask ourselves is “Am I so important that my name should be remembered long after I am gone?” If people remember our names and our legacy after we are gone, they will derive perhaps some benefit. A godly example is certainly worth re- membering. But can our memory or our name save future generations? Can our legacy give life to all? The name of Jesus, His legacy, is the only name and lega- cy that gives salvation and hope to all mankind (Acts 4:12). If we wear His name and make His legacy our legacy, then whether we are remembered or not on this earth, we will have spent our short time here sharing with others the only name and legacy that truly matters. Though many of us will likely be forgotten in the future, if we live our lives for the name of God and Jesus, our names will be remembered by the ones who are worth being remembered by: God and Jesus (Phil. 4:3). When we are remembered by God on the last day, we will be given and wear a much better name than our own: The name of God Himself (Rev. 22:4). So let us not live life to be remembered on this earth. Let us live life so that the world will always remember Jesus, and that we may be remembered by Him for all eternity. ~Jeffrey Howell
