WELCOME
STATE WIDE DEAF WORSHIP
We welcome all our Deaf and Hearing visitors on this special day. We have
come full circle in a way because it was Brother Frank Rushing who was so
important to the beginnings of our Deaf congregation over 40 years ago when
Brothers Herman King and H.S. Whittington worked together to begin our
Deaf Ministry.
The elders were as committed then as they are now to providing a way for
our Deaf brethren to worship in signs and to allow our Deaf brothers to have an
active part in leading in all aspects of worship. We were blessed to have Frank
and Helen with us twice a month for teaching, fellowship and encouragement
until we were ready and able to secure a full time minister.
For many years Roy Price served as our Deaf minister. During his time here
we hosted National Workshops in 1986 and 1996 and Birmingham Bible
School for the Deaf (BBSD), under the direction of Wendell Gann and Tim
Shoemaker, produced many dedicated Deaf preachers. Roy's wife, Robin, en-
couraged and supported his ministry in every way and their family provided a
bridge to the Hearing congregation. Following Brother Roy, Hal Suddreth and
Ray Powell, both BBSD graduates, served as full time Deaf ministers.
Our congregation, both Deaf and Hearing was devastated by the sudden loss
of Brother Ray in March of 2018. The elders assured the Deaf congregation of
their commitment to them; and Brother Richard Robbins, a BBSD graduate,
retired Deaf minister and former Roebuck Parkway deacon volunteered to lead
our small but steadfast group.
Our Deaf brothers have shown their desire to teach and lead as well, and we
commend the faithfulness of our Deaf Congregation. We have also enjoyed the
occasional visits of Brothers Leonard Jordan and Victor Cayetano, who like
Brother Frank so long ago, have helped teach and encourage us. We would
welcome other brothers who could preach and teach from time to time, and if
you know of someone, please let our elders know. On behalf of the elders and
the Deerfoot congregation, welcome back Brother Frank and welcome to all
our Deaf friends.
