What is the Church?
If you did a quick Google search for the number of
Christian denominations globally, you would find that the
numbers range from 34,000 all the way up to 45,000
different denominations all claiming to be a church. But
our question is what is THE Church? To answer this
question correctly, it is vital to ask, “What is the Church
according to the Bible?
The Church is the Body of Christ
“Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my
flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions
for the sake of his body, that is, the church” (Colossians
1:24).
“And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the
beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything
he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God
was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to
himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making
peace by the blood of his cross” (Colossians 1:18–20).
The Church Belongs to Christ
“Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of
Christ greet you” (Romans 16:16).
The Church Is the Pillar Of Truth
The Apostle Paul tells Timothy, a young leader in
the Church, that he longs to see him face to face and
encourage him. The way he chooses to encourage him is
by explaining what the Church and the truth have to do
with one another.
“I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things
to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to
behave in the household of God, which is the church of the
living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth” (1 Timothy
3:14-15).
The Church Is The Bride Of Christ
Also the rock where the Church is built in Matthew 16:18
is the Greek word “Petra” which is a feminine ending.
Petros is masculine. Therefore, the Church of Christ is
feminine in nature.
Paul tells the Church that meets in Ephesus:
“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church
and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her,
having cleansed her by the washing of water with the
word, so that he might present the church to himself
in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing,
that she might be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians
5:25–27).
The Church Is a Hospital For Sinners
“As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in
the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like
living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be
a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable
to God through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:4–5). Christians
are those who have been rejected by the world, the Church
is a body where all are accepted for treatment. No one is
turned away in this hospital where healing is found. Where
the community of the Bride, the Pillar of Truth and Jesus is
found.
