In H__________ of E__________ L_________, Titus ___:___-___ Titus ___:___-___ G____________ P______________ Titus ___:___-___ (___B-___) Ezekiel ___:___-___; ___-___ Red Letters Only! “I’m a red letter Christian!” The central idea behind this belief is that only the red letter Words of Jesus are to be followed and are authoritatively binding upon Christians. This belief leads to a very interesting question: If you only believe the red letter Words of Jesus to be Scripturally authoritative, what then do Jesus’ Words tell you to believe about the rest of the Bible? For example, what do the red letter Words of Jesus tell a person to believe about the first five books of the Bible – also called the Law and the Book of Moses? According to Jesus in John 5:46-47, Moses wrote about Him, and explains that a person cannot believe in Him if they don’t believe in Moses’ writings. Elsewhere, Jesus explicitly identifies a verse from the book of Exodus as being from God (Mat. 22:31-32). So Jesus considers all the writings of Moses to be Scripture. What about the Psalms? Jesus defined passages from the Psalms as being Scripture on three different occasions during His ministry (Mk. 12:10; John 10:34-35; John 13:18). What about the books of the Prophets? In Lk. 4:17-21, Jesus identifies the prophetic book of Isaiah as Scripture, and therefore, authoritative. And when it comes to the whole Old Testament, Jesus settles the matter conclusively in regard to what He identified as Scripture. “Now He said to them, ‘These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled’” (Lk. 24:44). Jesus saw the Law, Prophets, and the Psalms as all speaking prophecy about Him, which makes these broad categories of the Bible Scripture according to Jesus. Conclusively speaking, Jesus viewed the whole Old Testament as Scripture from God and the Holy Spirit. Last, what will a person believe about the authority of the New Testament based on Jesus’ Words alone? In Lk. 10:16, Jesus said this to His apostles: “The one who listens to you listens to Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.” The apostles were some of the main writers of the New Testament. So according to Jesus, not listening to and rejecting the teachings of the apostles in the Bible is to reject Jesus Himself. If one believes the red letters of Jesus to be authoritative and binding, then one believes the books of the apostles to also be authoritative and binding. What about Paul’s letters? If you believe Jesus’ Words which leads to the belief that His apostles’ writings are authoritative, then you believe the statement from Peter the apostle where he identifies Paul’s letters as being Scripture (2 Pet. 3:16). James was recognized as authoritative by the apostles (Acts 21:18; 15:2), and Jude was also a recognized leader in the Church. So, we can accept their books as authoritative. Thus, we arrive at this most profound and ironic conclusion: Believing only in the authority of the red letters, leads to believing in the authority of the black letters too. If you don’t, then you don’t really believe in the red letters of Jesus. If anyone honestly accepts Jesus’ Words as authoritative Scripture, then one cannot honestly or logically reject the rest of the Bible as authoritative Scripture without rejecting the Words of Jesus. So, honest belief in Jesus’ Words leads to belief in the entire Word of God. ~ Jeffrey Howell
