  1. Key Points Know where to look Know what you’re looking for Know how to search Know how to drill down and be efficient
  2. Key Points: Many non-profits shy away from seeking funds through government because they think that they’ll be restricted in achieving their mission. A lot of money may be available to help you accomplish your vision if you think big. Be reasonable, grants larger than your organizational budget may be out of reach. Need staff, facilities, capacity to implement.
  3. Grants.gov is the clearinghouse for federal grants Federal education grants at both locations Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
  4. CALIFORNIA grant clearinghouse online here Of course the individual departments are always available online at http://ca.gov
  5. Corporations tend to give in several ways. One is they establish a foundation to give larger grants away and these typically operate in areas where the company is located or has customers. Then the companies set up direct giving programs where local stores or outlets have a budget to spend each year. Another common area is their community relations and promotions departments that sometimes have money to give out to programs that they think will benefit the company in some way by giving them a lot of promotion. These can be accessed by communicating directly with the managers of these departments.
  6. Foundations give away billions each year to every cause under the sun, to every geographic location and to all sizes of organizations. Foundations are legally incorporated entities that provide means of giving that also provides tax incentives to the giver. Finding the foundations who share concern for your cause is the trick and finding them is easiest if you have access to an online service. There are a variety foundation types including community foundations, family foundations, independent foundations, and operating foundations. Not all of these organizations necessarily give grants. Links - Foundation Center, Guide Star and Big Online
  7. Serve a specific geographic region When a wealthy individual wants to give away some money but does not want to set up a foundation of their own, they can give their money to a community foundation with guidelines on the types of programs they want the money to benefit. The work of finding worthy organizations is then left to the community foundation. A community foundation then serve as trustee of an endowed fund from many public donors. The level of involvement of the donors is entirely up to them, they can have as little input or as much as they want, it is their money.
  8. Usually operated within the family that donated the money. Term is informal, may also be called a Private or an Independent Foundation. Usually operate using non-government funds.
  9. Must “pay out” approximately 5% of the market value of its assets each Year, Also referred to as a Private Foundation
  10. So how do you know when grants are available? A lot of monitoring of likely sources is required in order to access opportunities. These are usually announced with an RFP/RFA. Federal funding is predicted using the federal funding forecast but the timelines often change after this is issued so check back regularly to monitor actual vs. forecasted deadlines. For federal funding watch the Federal Register as all grants are announced in that document and whatever is in there is considered final authority.
  11. An online subscription makes sense if you are going to be doing a lot of grant research. But it is expenseive to maintain so fortunately the database for the foundation center is available free to the public at a lot of different places. In Sacramento, this resource is available at the Non Profit Resource Center.
  12. Grant research is hard work. It takes a lot of time to do and it helps to have some knowledge about how to go about it. I’d recommend attending a training about grant seeking in order to get the fundamentals down pat or you’ll experience a lot of frustration reinventing the wheel. We have also developed a part 2 to this webinar called Effective Grant Research and you’ll find access to that here on http://grantgoddess.com.
  13. Thanks for attending this webinar produced for you by Creative Resources + Research.
