1st Phase of Construction
Dynamics
Croatia opts to start the offensive process with 2 players – the
center backs.
The midfielders support with a passing line.
Modric and Badelj tend to be one touch players and they
progress with that intention. If Kovacic is called, he opts to
conduct more often than passing the ball.
The full backs play wide open, specially the captain Srna.
This gives Croatia more width to open the defense and create
more space for Modric or Rakitic to show in the passing lines and
create more variety.
If the pressure is high, the ball is often in Corluka who plays
direcly to the wings for Perisic or Brozovic.

1st Phase of Construction – 1st Pass Statistics
Dynamics
When Croatia recovers the ball, usually plays it short.
They have two different approaches – ball in the middle to start
their offensive process, or ball directly in the wing to explore the
counter attack.
The stats show that they play more often forwards than
backwards when they conquer the ball.

2nd Phase of Construction
Dynamics
Rakitic has a main role here. He can go free, searching for the
spaces between the defense and create the dynamic to go
further in the field.
Usually he opts to conquer space with conduction, but varies a lot
his game.
Modric supports more this stage than Badelj, who’s concerned
with the balance if they lose the ball.
The wingers can make 2 different moves: first they can play
closer to the line giving width and exploring the ball on the space
upfront; secondly they can play inside, opening space for Srna
and Strinic.
Mandzukic sometimes shows up in the line creating space for
Rakitic and Modric so they can be closer to the area – both have
great long distance shoot.
Combinations: Midfielders with wingers
Midfielders with full backs
Center midfielders with offensive midfielder

Goal Creation
Dynamics
With a big pace during the game, Croatia puts some pressure on
the finishing area.
They opt for the cross – Perisic and Srna are both specialists in
this field, and Mandzukic is a great header.
The pressure on the second ball with Modric-Rakitic-Badelj
getting more upfront than the average team, creates an extra
danger in the last third of the field.
When they search the middle with Rakitic, the winger plays wide
open, and creates interior movements to the goal, exploring the
ball on the back of the defense.
Combinations: Wingers with Forwards
Wingers with Midfielders
Midfielders with Forward

Goal Creation - Cross Statistics
Dynamics
Although they play often from both sides, it’s on the right side,
with Srna, that more crosses to the area emerge.
Srna variates with crosses to the first post and the back of the
defense.

Goal Creation - Statistics
Dynamics
As we can see, they create a lot of shooting opportunities outside
the box. This is due to the second balls and the late crosses.
They’re much more effective inside the box though, result of
Mandzukic and Perisic mostly.

Negative Offensive Statistics
Dynamics
When they opt for direct play, they loose efficiency as expected.
This resulted in a big number of lost balls in their own midfield
that can be dangerous if the opponent uses a counter attack play
style.
The higher number against Spain is explained by the intention of
putting the ball on the back of the full backs that play with a lot of
depth.

Offensive Transition
Dynamics
In this particular moment, Croatia has two ways of solving it:
-They can progress with conduction, trying to solve the problem
individually, or they use short pass combinations and vary the
side of the ball quickly.
When they face this type of situation, Rakitic and Perisic are the
ones to pressure. They’re the ones the team is looking for in the
counter attack.

Set Play – Indirect Free Kick
Dynamics
Takers: Rakitic is the man who plays the Indirect Free Kick,
although Modric and Srna can also do it.
Targets: Vida, Corluka and Mandzukic
Area: Penalty zone

Set Play – Corner
Dynamics
Srna takes the corners from both sides.
Targets: Corluka, Mandzukic and Vida
Area: First bar and the back of the defense

Defensive System
Dynamics
They change a bit in the defensive process.
Rakitic goes along with Mandzukic for the first pressure zone,
trying to close the lines for the oppponent´s center backs.
At the same time Brozovic and Perisic close the space along with
Modric and Badelj creating a 1-4-4-2 system that can change
when the opponent gets inside their lines.
The defensive line stays together and the dynamic is low.
The midfielders follow the attackers even if they change position
with a teammate, this means that they’re always compensating
movements from each other.
Mandzukic doesn’t go behind the opponent´s center backs,
putting pressure for the counter attack.

Defensive System – Forward
Dynamics
They don’t try to block the man with the ball, closing the passing
lines until they got in the pressure zone they want to.
Rakitic does this perfectly, sufocating the opponent when they get
on one side.
Mandzukic controls the ball trajectory to close passing lines,
getting forward if the ball gets inside the pressure zone or
between Croatia’s lines.

Defensive Transition – Midfield
Dynamics
The two center midfielders play in line with each other defining the space between
them and the defense – usually they have the lines close to each other making it hard
to create space in the middle.
The wingers support this movements, helping to close the space in the pressure zone.
Rakitic can go back and help in the center to create numeric advantage. It’s really
important for them this habilty of Rakitic to play longside with Mandzukic, continuing to
help when the opponent gets closer to the goal.

WWW.VIDEOBSERVER.COMANALYSIS BY MAURO SARAIVA
Defensive System – Defense
Dynamics
The defense sticks really close not creating space between them
that can be explored by the attackers.
When the ball is on the line, the winger of the opposite side,
closes the space inside, and the full back of the same side,
closes the space behind the midfield, keeping their defense really
tight and with the hability to be in advantage all the time.
The space to explore against Croatia is the space in the back of
the center midfielders. The wingers react when the ball gets to
the opposite side, not when it’s on the middle. That’s the space
that can unbalance them.

Defensive Statistics – Crosses Against
Dynamics
They don’t conceed a lot of crosses, due to the facts explained
above. The players concentration is very effective.
If there’s space for the cross, the opponent should explore the
first post, due to the space between the full back on the ball and
the center back covering him.

Defensive Statistics
Dynamics
As we can see, it’s ouside the box that you can surprise Croatia.
The space in the middle can be unbalanced and be taken to
create danger for Subašić.

WWW.VIDEOBSERVER.COMANALYSIS BY MAURO SARAIVA
Defensive Statistics – Recovered Ball
Dynamics
As Croatia prefers to make high pressure, they try to take the ball
up in the field closer to the goal. The defensive transition is
effective as we can see, and the recover of the ball is really high
on the pitch.
The average of balls recovered in this transition is high, meaning
they can create a lot of moments with the opponent’s defense
unbalanced.

Defensive Statistics - Discipline
Dynamics
The definition of the pressure zone can be identified also by the
heat map that shows us where the team is more agressive.
The right side with Brozovic and Srna (the ones who cross more
on the team, due to the fact that they put more pressure here),
shows us they like to bring the opponents to this side and then
suffocate the space with the ball.
