examining the relationship between homework and school achievement have been inclusive(ERIC).
Still many teachers and researchers still agree that homework helps students achieve higher grades in
school. Schools that assigned homework frequently showed higher student achievement than schools
that assigned little homework(ERIC). This means that homework is working. Studies have generally
found that if teachers carefully plan homework, homework can be quite helpful(KidSource).
Homework has proven its effectiveness and is a very powerful factor in student performance.
Students should only spend enough time on homework so that the subject is reinforced and not just
a waste of time. The national PTA suggest that from K–3 grades there should be no more than 20
minutes a day, for 4–6 grades there should be 20–40 minutes of homework, and from 7–12 grades
time varies do to types of subjects and number of subjects taken(KidSource). Anymore than these
recommended amount of times is seen excessive by the national PTA. Surprisingly U.S. students
are working as hard as Asians: 24% of eighth graders do more then two hour of homework

Raising Children Is Not An Easy Task
Raising children is not an easy task and there are many different routes one can take when choosing
what kind of home the child will grow up in. Parenting styles vary anywhere from parents being over
controlling and strict, to an easy–going parenting style, to even helicopter parents. All these different
types of parents raise their children with the same goal in mind; parents just want the best for their
kid. The fact that parents want the best for their kid never changes; what changes is what the parent
thinks is best for their kid.
To begin, Amy Chua's 'Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior' reveals an extremely strict side of
parenting where Chua controls her daughter 's life by telling them what to do and when to do it. In
the article Chua lists the multitude of things her two daughters were not allowed to do, including:
attend a sleepover or playdate, choose their own extracurricular activities, and get any grade less
than an A. According to this article, 'chinese mothers' are superior because they don't have to worry
about damaging their child 's self esteem. Chua states, "Chinese mothers can say to their daughters,
'Hey fatty– loose some weight.' By contrast, western parents have to tiptoe around the issue, talking
in terms of 'health' and never ever mentioning the f–word, and their kids still end up in therapy for

Our fourth obstacle is also dealing with colors. There are three cones setup. Under each cone is a
car. Two cars are blue and the other car is silver. CJ's job is to find the silver car. He must look
under the cones until he finds the silver car. Next is another physical activity. CJ must stand a
certain distance, measured by a piece of tape, from a bucket. The object is to throw the three balls
into the bucket. This tests the development of arm motion and coordination. Finally, the last
obstacle deals with conservation. Conservation is the idea that physical characteristics of objects
remain the same when their outward appearance changes. This comes from Piaget's
preoperational stage. We had two glass filled with the same amount of liquid. CJ was asked if the
two glass had the same amount. Next we poured one glass of liquid into a bowl, and asked if they

But after a year and half, I felt it was time for me to move on and find a job. After I left Indiana
Bible College, I did the whole random job thing. I was a nanny, worked in a shoe store, a grocery
store, and finally a hotel. When I started working in the hotel industry, I found that I absolutely
loved it! I loved going to work knowing each day was going to be different. I met people from all
walks of life; from the business man to the trucker and even to the traveling family who were just

Anyone who has spent time with or around children will notice that each one has a special
personality all of their own. Children, like adults, have different traits that make up their

in with the child regularly, the caregiver will be more knowledgeable about when the child needs
attention and when they do not.
The next temperament is the fearful type. These are the more quiet and shy children. This makes up
about 15 percent of children (Mangione). They adapt slowly to new environments and take longer
than flexible children when warming up to things. When presented with a new environment, fearful
children often cling to something or someone familiar. Whether it be the main caregiver or a
material object such as a blanket, the fearful child will cling to it until they feel comfortable with the
new situation. This can result in a deep attachment of the child to a particular caregiver or object.
Fearful children may also withdraw when pushed into a new situation too quickly (Mangione). They
may also withdraw when other children are jumping into a new project or situation they are not
comfortable with. These children may tend to play alone rather than with a group.
In dealing with fearful children, caregivers find they need more attention than flexible children. A
good technique for helping these children is having "a sequence of being with, talking to, stepping

Children are always watching and learning, and even as an adult, a son or daughter will still be
influenced by their parents whether it be for something happening present time, or in the past. If
a parent has a healthy exercise routine then it is likely that the child will want to pick that habit
up as well. But on the other side, if a parent does not have good exercise habits, then the child will
likely pick that up as well. As parents, our nation has become fixated on putting our kids in front
of a TV to occupy time. We think if we can put our children down in front of that TV and be able

Introduction
The Child Study data I have gathered comes from the observation I have completed at Mission
Bell Elementary School. Mission Bell Elementary School is a local school in Riverside. In the P.M
preschool class there are 24 students, one teacher, and one assistant. The child I decided to
observe is names Zoe. Zoe is 4 years and 10 months old. I immediately was drawn to Zoe because
she had such a big personality, was very social, and smart. I am glad that I choose to observe Zoe

This is one of her favorite activities because it allows her to run around and get out her energy.
Zoe favorite game, and only game she plays, are the computer games. Zoe will avoid such games
as board games but will go and play on the computer when she can. The games on the computer
help her to learn how to control an object such as the mouse and pointer. This helps Zoe in the
development of her fine motor skills. Zoe's favorite table game is play dough. The play dough
station is always the first station that Zoe goes to if she is picked to go their. At this station Zoe
again uses her fine motor skills to create all different types of objects with her play dough.

preoperational stage. Zoe's cognitive development is shown through her make–believe play. "Piaget
believed that through pretending, young children practice and strengthen newly acquired
representational schemes." (Berk, 2007, P 227). When Zoe plays with her play dough she pretend
that she is making pizza. She begins by taking a handful of play dough and placing it on the table,
she then get a small rolling pin to roll the play dough out flat. Once the play dough is rolled out

Wednesday, July 19th, I had a chance to observe carefully an infant for about half an hour in my
psychology class at Santa Monica College. The infant, Ali Osman, a healthy, playful boy appears
to be of Middle Eastern origin. He is 15.5 months old, 32" tall and weighs about 24 lbs with brown
curly hair, dark brown eyes and fairly tanned skin.
There were several kinds of toys like blocks, dolls, and automobiles in the room. However, when he

Ali is quite a friendly kid, he is not afraid to be with strangers proven by the fact that he could
interact very comfortably with me, my classmates, and other babies. However, when there were
some unfamiliar things happening (like when the new baby twins came in or when someone made
a scary face to him), he always looked for his mother and ran toward her as described in
proximity–seeking behaviors (Berger 226). He is a representative of secure attachment by
showing that he had no problem with being away from his mother and exploring on his own

democratic parenting style is when your teenager wants to get a piercing or a tattoo. This subject
is surprisingly easy for me to make rules upon. I would never tell my child not to get a piercing,
but I also would not give them consent. I know what it is like to have a mom who says no most
of the time to everything. With my children, I do not want to have to say no because that will
make them want to do it even more. As long as I found the piercing or tattoo to be age appropriate
and small, I would not mind making an adjustment to their wishes as long as they made
