- The following presentation will give you an insight into mySAP ERP and its technology aspects.
- As you can see, this presentation is divided into five sections. The first section addresses the mySAP ERP solution from a general point of view: what is it, why did SAP conceive it, etc. The second section will give you an understanding of the technical architecture of mySAP ERP, explaining the main components and the different deployment options. The third section will help you to understand the transition options for existing SAP R/3 customers to mySAP ERP or to the mySAP Business Suite. Then the fourth chapter gives an outlook on the future of mySAP ERP and the presentation ends with a summary and an overview of links to further resources.
- We will start with the first section and some background information on mySAP ERP: Why has SAP launched mySAP ERP? And where is mySAP ERP located in the SAP product portfolio? We will also look at the mySAP ERP solution map, where you see the areas of functionality that mySAP ERP offers. Finally, this section will end with the comparison of what mySAP ERP was in 2003, and what it will be in 2004. This section is very important since it will show the value generated by mySAP ERP. However, since this is a technology-oriented presentation, we will not go into much detail on the application and value aspects. - Let’s have a closer look at the mySAP Business Suite and its mySAP solutions. The principle of the mySAP Business Suite and its solutions is that customers can find exactly the software they need for their requirements. mySAP ERP can be seen as the first step towards the full suite. A customer that requires only ERP capabilities could start with mySAP ERP. By licensing mySAP ERP, this customer will receive the software for state-of-the-art ERP, including SAP NetWeaver. Later on, the customer might realize that his requirements have increased. The company now also needs the capabilities of mySAP CRM and mySAP SCM. The answer to this could be a combination of the specific mySAP solutions with the existing mySAP ERP license or the conversion to the mySAP Business Suite, which includes these mySAP solutions as well. We can say that “the mySAP solutions are subsets of the mySAP Business Suite.” However, a company could certainly also start immediately with the mySAP Business Suite, depending on its requirements. We will come back to this in a later section when we consider transition options.

- After reviewing mySAP ERP and its content, we come now to the next section of this presentation, where we will take a closer look at the architecture of mySAP ERP.
- One of the first questions customers normally ask is, “Why did SAP launch mySAP ERP instead of further developing SAP R/3 as the ERP solution”? Well, the answer is pretty clear. Basically it was the feedback of the installed base customers, as well as of the new customers, that showed us the time was right to make some changes. On one hand, customers agreed that SAP R/3 was already a strong solution to support ERP requirements. But on the other hand, many of them also felt that today’s requirements were more complex than SAP R/3 could handle. In a time when customers recognize the benefits of SAP Business Warehouse and many of them have already implemented it, or when customers are thinking about increasing usability by implementing a portal, it becomes clear that ERP is expected to offer these capabilities as well. Furthermore, customers didn’t just look at the technical aspects. They also searched for new functionalities in all areas of the application, based on the new technologies. The best technology is brings no benefit if it is not utilized by applications. As a result of the feedback received, SAP launched mySAP ERP in March 2003. At that time, mySAP ERP was more or less a bundle of different SAP components, such as SAP R/3 Enterprise, SAP SEM (Strategic Enterprise Management), … as well as all the components of SAP NetWeaver, the state-of-the-art technology platform providing portal, business warehouse, exchange infrastructure, and many other capabilities. In mySAP ERP, new customers could buy a complete ERP solution. Installed base customers with SAP R/3 contracts, on the other hand, had the chance to convert their license to mySAP ERP to benefit from it.
- Let’s have a closer look at the mySAP Business Suite and its mySAP solutions. - This picture gives a good overview of the evolution of the ERP solutions from SAP. After the SAP R/1 and SAP R/2 products, SAP introduced SAP R/3 in 1992. Up to SAP R/3 Release 4.6, SAP R/3 had a two layer architecture (SAP Basis and SAP Application). With SAP R/3 Enterprise, the three layer strategy was introduced. With mySAP ERP, which has been available since March 2003, SAP offered a bundle of components supporting ERP business processes. At this point, SAP R/3 Enterprise was one of those components. As you can see here, even from this point mySAP ERP was more than just SAP R/3 Enterprise plus SAP NetWeaver, since it offered many functional enhancements like Self Services, SAP SEM, and others. As mentioned in previous slides, the next steps include a tighter integration within mySAP ERP (especially with the SAP NetWeaver capabilities), enhancements in the area of usability and employee efficiency, and the reduction of TCO. SAP also wants to provide additional functionality. The SAP ERP Central Component represents the next step in this evolution. As you can see, the orange boxes represent the items that can be operated on an SAP ERP Central Component. And in the SAP NetWeaver area, you can see the dark blue frames that are technically integrated in the SAP ERP Central Component. Looking at the 2004 edition, it is clear that mySAP ERP is more than just SAP ERP Central Component plus SAP NetWeaver. Please note, that the value for the individual customer might come from one component of mySAP ERP – or the combination of several components inside mySAP ERP. When you explain the value to your customers, it is wise not to focus only on a single component.
- mySAP ERP is powered by SAP NetWeaver. Let’s now have a look at how the solution is already making use of the capabilities of SAP NetWeaver. This slide gives some examples that answer this question. One very good example is the Self Services provided with mySAP ERP. They utilize the portal capabilities, make use of SAP BW (SAP Business Information Warehouse) through the Manager Self Services, and are technically based on the SAP Web Application Server. Other functionalities, like the Self-Service Procurement, utilize the Integration Broker (SAP Exchange Infrastructure).
