  11. Should we more/less specific when it comes to the different programs, i.e. leave Mission in or don’t have at all? Mother Goose: An oral language program offered by the Mission Literacy Association to parents and children under 18 months that builds a foundation of literacy through songs, rhymes and phonemic awareness. It raises awareness of the difference these basic literacy skills can make in the lives of children. Increases interest among parents in enriching their homes through literacy. It creates social and supportive networks among parents. The program assists parents in gaining skills and confidence to give their children healthy early experiences with language and communication Mother Goose sessions are run on Saturdays IN SALMON ARM, to accommodate the many single-parent working families in the neighbourhood
  12. Simiilar to last slide, do we add-in the actual location? Write a little more about the program, i.e. to help develop an active lifestyle and social skills for children as they grow? Help parents network and interact with others in similar situations? Is this child too young? Fun and Run Drop-in: District of Mission’s Mission Parks, Recreation and Culture located at the Leisure Centre, 7650 Grand St, and Success By 6 offer a free drop-in gym program for families with children aged zero to six. Once a week this program focuses on children’s motor and social skills with an instructor and parent participation. Come enjoy a free indoor gym time with your little one while meeting new people.
  13. If we are going to be more specific I suggest that this slide talks about the Salmon Arm/Shuswap daycare creation/expansions. In 2007, this group was stuggling to find support for expansion. There was an extreme shortage of quality child care in the neighbourhood. EDI data was used at a community Child Care forum, and in our meeting with MLA George Abbott & Min of State for Child Care Linda Reid. As a result, Provincial funding of almost $100,000 was found, and along with the oragnization's massive grant writing campaign & fundraisers, the Centre will open an out of school program Oct 17, 2008 for 20 children and Preschool Program for 40 children aged 3-5! The Salmon Arm downtown core was losing supports and services for young families left and right. Their elementary school was closed. Low income families now had to bus their kids to schools in neighbourhoods that are very foreign to them. Through community action, the downtown school site was turned into an Activity Centre, but it was struggling. Armed with the EDI and SES data, we have been able to turn the tide towards keeping programs at the site, expanding some programs and in some cases creating new programs.

MISSION: Monthly Children’s Celebrations : held on various days (for 3 hours) and with seasonal themes at the Leisure Centre 7650 Grand St. These celebrations have a reading area, a toddler play area, a bouncy castle, face painting, craft area and many community resources usually supported by a few professionals who answer parent and caregiver questions.
