1. What Are The Letters At The Vimy Ridge
April 20, 1917
France
My dear mother
Got some time to spare in my dugout to finish my monthly green envelope. The officers will
probably not be censoring this one. Maybe at the Base. I received a letter from you few weeks
ago dated Feb 5. You must be worried since the last envelope I had sent you few months ago. I am
well. But its was very unfortunate for one of my buddies in the dugout had been heavily wounded
in the Arras area and died when he was treated. Many had been killed in action too. On the other
hand John is as usual. He has always been convincing himself that he would live through the war
for his wife and daughter back in Canada. Please give his regards to his family.
Last week our attack at the Vimy Ridge came off well and there

2. The Battle of Vimy Ridge is one of the most important battles in all of Canadian history. Prior to
Vimy Ridge, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps had never fought with each other as one unit,
but in this battle, they were assembled together and fought as a country. In addition to that, the whole
battle was planned and prepared by General Byng and Arthur Currie, two high–ranking Canadians.
They created an all new strategy called involving a creeping barrage of artillery which was so
effective, it was even adopted by the British army in 1918.
In my opinion, Vimy Ridge is a defining moment in Canadian history because it gave our whole
country a sense of nationalism for one of the first times ever. This part of our history was all about

For centuries, Canada has been extracting and using all of the resources that we could at an
increasingly shocking rate. Ever since the beginning, we have been seen as a resource–rich country,
and with so much, it makes perfect sense that we are one of the most wasteful countries in the entire
world. Our country extracts so much and much of that eventually ends up in landfills, in fact, Canada
has one of the highest garbage rates and electricity consumption rates in the entire world.
The reason that Canada's future looks bleak is because of the rate that Canada is using up our
natural resources at. For example, Oil is an essential resource in our current era, something Canada
happens to have plenty of. But for how long? Ever since pipelines such as the Mackenzie Valley
Pipeline were first being built, they have only increased in number. Canada has several pipelines
sending oil directly to the United States. While many other countries choose to reserve their
resources for themselves, Canada has been exporting them at an alarming rate. A natural resource
crisis is something that may very well be in our future, as the world continues to consume more
and more resources than ever before. It will be a significant problem in our future because until
now the U.S. has always felt entitled to our resource, and by the time we finally realize that saving a
portion of resources

3. One of Canada's largest military endeavors was the battle of Vimy Ridge during World War One.
It was a fierce battle between Germans and Canadians. Canada was trying to take over the German
controlled ridge, which ran from northwest to southwest between Lens and Arras, France. Its
highest point was 145 feet above sea level, which was exceptionally helpful in battle because of the
very flat landscape. Already over 200,000 men had fallen at Vimy, all desperately trying to take or
defend this important and strategic ridge. As a result of its success in taking the ridge, Canada gained
a lot more than just the strategic point. Canada was united as a nation, and the victory changed the
way other counties viewed them. Canadians no longer...show more content...
Not only did the battle affect the way Canadian's allies saw them, it also affected their enemies.
German veterans have told stories about the war, revealing that some Germans feared Canadian
soldiers more than soldiers of any other country. At the start of the war, Canadians were not really
viewed as independent Canadian soldiers, but rather, soldiers of the British military force. As a
result of their achievements at Vimy Ridge, Canada was granted their own seat at the signing of the
Treaty of Versailles after the war. Clearly, thebattle of Vimy Ridge created Canada as a nation in the
eyes of other countries.
The feats achieved by Canadians were incredible, and more influential than anything they had
done before. Vimy was one of the German's most heavily guarded areas, and it was thought that it
was impossible to over take. However, when the Canadians did take it, they captured the most
artillery and guns since the start of the war. They also managed to take 4,000 Germans as prisoners
of war. Past battles at Vimy witnessed over 200,000 causalities. During the Canadian attack on the
ridge, they lost 3,598 soldiers while the Germans suffered over 20,000 causalities. Canadians had
much to be proud of after Vimy, a feeling they did not often get while fighting under British
command. Critics question whether Vimy aided Canada's birth as a nation. "It is difficult to avoid
the conclusion that if Vimy Ridge had been captured

Canada transpired from the First World War as a dignified triumphant nation with a new prestige in
the world. The battle of Vimy Ridge united the individuals of Canada to pursue a common cause,
leading to victory and the establishment of the battle as a defining event in Canadian history; the
conquest of Vimy would progress into the making of a fully independent and confederate country.
When Canada became visible The battle of Vimy Ridge was the coming of age as a nation for
Canada because it was one of the first times that all four divisions of the Canadian Corps came in
union. Early Canadian nationalism developed due to the greater number of men who fought the
battle were all varying races of Canadian citizens. The soldiers participating were widespread,
coming from a variety of places as the prairie farms, West, East coast and central Canada. When the
recruitment for soldiers began a surprisingly immersive amount of ordinary individuals volunteered,

No other allied operations were as thoroughly planned and coordinated as ours to succeed in
capturing Vimy, since the Ridge was so well fortified all attempts to capture it failed ultimately
except ours. Canadians soldiers trained exceptionally under the surveillance of Arthur Currie
commander of the First Canadian Division. Preparations were complex; to thoroughly understand
and prepare for every stage of the warfare a replica of Vimy had been built representing every inch
for implementation at the authentic Vimy Ridge on Easter Monday. Most historians accounted that
Major–General Currie was tolerant, diligent and had significant faith in his men. The weeks of
practice, accumulate of weapons and hard work finally paid off. In a matter of five days the
Canadian Corps had captured all of Vimy Ridge. The Icy, snow– covered ridge may have been
impregnable for the debilitated but not for a powerful determined nation like the

It's been a while since I written in here I have just been so busy. 2 weeks ago I turned I turned 18
and was conscripted to go fight in the war. I can't really say if the news made me happy or sad. I
didn't care anymore, my father had died already died almost a year ago. The news had really
shattered my mother's heart and now that I have been sent of I fear what will become of her. I have
been trying to send her a letter for months now but have been told that it was too dangerous at this
time.
Currently I'm positioned at the battle of Vimy Ridge, I have seen countless displays of courage from
my fellow soldiers. Though there courage, had only gotten them killed it helped me to believe that

Dear Elizabeth, April 19th, 1917 How are you and the kids? I miss you so much and wish I could

and it has been such long time since I've held you in my arms. How is the bakery business going?
I hope running the business while taking care of John and Anna isn't too stressful. I'm writing to
you from a camp reserve right now, and it's been a week since we captured Vimy Ridge. It has been
so cold, wet, and muddy, and I've been struggling to keep warm so if possible, it would be helpful
if you could send a few pairs of socks. While resting in the trenches during the battle,

World War I, also known as the First World War, the Great War, or the War to End All Wars was a
global war originating in Europe that lasted from July 28th 1914 to November 11th 1918. During
the war, Canada had played a very important role under the British Empire. Canadian soldiers were
sent under the British Empire to capture Vimy Ridge, (a monument) which was held by the
Germans. The Battle of Vimy Ridge isCanada's most celebrated military victory – an often
mythologized symbol of the birth of Canadian national pride and awareness. The four divisions of
the Canadian Corps, fought together for the first time, attacked the ridge from April 9th to 12th
1917, and captured it from the German army. Despite their success, more than 10,500 Canadians
were killed and wounded in the assault. Today, an iconic white memorial atop the ridge honours the

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was the nephew of Emperor Franz Josef and heir to the
throne of Austria and Hungary. The assassination was planned by a Serbian terrorist group, called,
"The Black Hand". The man who shot Franz Ferdinand and his wife was a Bosnian revolutionary
named Gavrilo Princip. Gavrilo Princip wanted the Austro–Hungarian Empire out of Bosnia. To me,
the cause of the war was mainly nationalism and alliances. While Archduke Franz Ferdinand's
murder was the immediate cause for the declarations of war, a patchwork of mutual defence alliances
were made throughout Europe meaning, if one country was attacked, another was likely to defend
them. The allies included Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United States. These countries fought
against the Central Powers which included Germany, Austria–Hungary, Ottoman Empire, and

9. Vimy Ridge Myth
With the coming centennial of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, it is perhaps appropriate to revisit battle's
significance in Canadian military history. While renowned within Canada, Vimy Ridge is obscure
internationally and simply known as a component of the Battle of Arras. The ridge was a prominent
geographical feature that dominated the surrounding area, and securing it was the Canadian Corps'
objective for the Arras campaign. The battle for Vimy took place from 9–12 April 1917, and resulted
in an allied victory. As of 2015, eight in ten Canadians feel that the commemoration of this victory at
Vimy Ridge should be the key celebration for Canada's sesquicentennial anniversary. Unequivocally,
this highlights the salience of the event in the nation's...show more content...
First, the study will begin with an examination of how the individual Canadian soldier at Vimy
Ridge is mythically portrayed to possess superior qualities compared to the soldiers of allied armies.
This myth will be debunked using statistics, showing that Canadian soldiers were not markedly
superior in any quantitative way. Second, the myth that Vimy Ridge was an impregnable defence
which Canadians miraculously overcame will be scrutinized. Conversely, this study will show that
the German position was far from secure, greatly devaluing the ridge's mythical status. Third, the
false pretense that The Canadian Corps could achieve objectives that allied armies could not will be
evaluated. Rather, it will be demonstrated that there was no attempt to take the Ridge in the two
years prior to the Canadian assault of April 1917. Fourth, and perhaps most importantly, the myth
that the Canadian Corps would employ brand new, innovative tactics will be refuted with the
evidence that there was nothing innovative nor new about the tactics employed. Finally, this paper
will provide an explanation of the myth's purpose, and how the myth proliferated so

1.(a) What, according to Source A, were the problems Germans had faced by the Canadian Army
operating the artillery? [3 marks]
Canadian troops were tasked to capture the important Vimy Ridge. The Canadian Army bombarded
the German positions with countless artilleries and it became a week of suffering for the Germans.
This artillery bombardment had helped Canada develop a successful way to defeat Germany. As a
result, Germans faced devastating effects, due to the constant firing by the Canadians. The German
soldiers had little chance to succeed against the artillery as transportation and communications were
destroyed, stopping supplies such as food, medication etc., ammunition and new troops from
reaching the front line because of the endless...show more content...
The focus of the painting is based on the two soldiers passing the shell to each other and then into to
the artillery to shoot against the German army. The gesture of working together in harsh realities
carries the message of unity and self–sacrifice for the war. One soldier does not have his uniform on
meaning no protective gear that characterizes unselfishness in the center of a great battle.
Furthermore, there is a soldier, who has an injury on his hand, yet still continuing to fight. The
wound shows contribution in the face of danger and heroism marked by the bandaged arm on his
return to the conflict. It sets an example of selflessness and bravery and the artist shows that in war,
sacrifice can be represented by their schedule of duty.

11. Vimy Ridge Significance
Vimy ridge was one of Canada's biggest defining moments in World War One. The major cause of
this event was the German expansion in Vimy ridge, which was originally French land. The German
army had set up three divisions in the ridge to expand their tunnel and trench systems. The Canadian
corps had been called in, to relieve the British IV corps, whom had previously tried to regain control
in the French land by, taking the land from German control. The operation commenced April 9th
1917 when the Canadian troops first entered the ridge. By April 12th 1917 the Canadian corps had
full control of the ridge. Probably the worst consequence of Vimy Ridge was the 10 602 casualties, 3
598 killed and 7 004 wounded. The German Army had 4 000 soldiers

TORONTO–– Coast to coast, Canadians celebrate military victory after the Battle of Vimy Ridge. A
new sense of pride is born, after Canadian troops do the impossible and conquer the Ridge from the
Germans, under the command of British General Sir Julian Byng and Canadian 1st division leader
General Arthur Currie. This was the first time Canadian troops fought not under Britain, but as their
own. They showed great military strength and courage for breaking through the impenetrable
German defense. Canadian troops proved to Britain that Canada can strive without British control.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge will pave the road to total autonomy for Canada. The attack on Vimy
Ridge started on April 9th, at 5:30 A.M. and by the afternoon of April 12th, Canada had won back
the highest vantage point, which overlooked the trenches on both sides and "no man's land". The
first wave of 15,000 Canadian soldiers from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th divisions had conquered
several positions across the 7 kilometre hill by that afternoon. Hill 145 and Pimple, located at the
top of the Ridge were captured after a mere 3 days of teamwork. Showing great military strength

Pre 1950
The Battle of Vimy Ridge took place in April 1917. This battle was the most intricately planned
operation on the Western front by the Allied troops during World War One. It was led by Canadian
General, Sir Arthur Currie, and was the first time all four Canadian Corps fought together in the
war. It was also the first time Canadian troops, led by a Canadian, shared a total Canadian victory.
This battle was a defining event for Canada, as it was a major step in achieving full independence
from the British. It was important for the growth of Canadian nationalism and pride.
Alberta's "Famous Five" were a group of accomplished Canadian women involved in the Persons
Case of 1927. At the time, The Constitution stated what requirements had to be met for a person to
be delegated into the Canadian Senate, and other government jobs. For years, it had been a given
that by a "person" they meant a man. The five women challenged Parliament and asked them
whether or not women were seen as persons. When the case went to the Supreme Court of Canada
in 1928, it was ruled that the Constitution meant "persons" as in men. However, when the British
Privy Council heard of this decision, they vetoed it, and so ruled that women were indeed persons
and eligible to be appointed to the Senate. In Canada, this was an important step forward for the

My final decision is that the battle of Vimy Ridge is the most significant event. This is because
Canada winning the battle gave it a good reputation and shows how powerful the army can be when
all 4 divisions and the Britain commanders join together as one team. Our soldiers were seen as
strong, tactile, and good fighters which is another way of how the international rep of Canada
increased. This battle also led to Canada getting its own commander, which would help greatly in
future battles. Without the victory of the war, Canada today wouldn't be as we know it and it would
probably be much worse, we wouldn't be on our path to an independant country, we wouldn't have a
good quality of life, there wouldn't have been a good economy, and the

Vimy Ridge had been a very prominent stronghold, of the triple alliance, being Austria–Hungary,
Germany, and Italy. This had been a landmark that had been constituted by the German fortifications
and their allies. Vim Ridge had been a central hub and military base for soldiers coming form
different regions, seemingly it had been difficult for the base to be captured, subsequently not being
captured until April 12, 1917 by the Canadian regiment with British and French allied help. Through
countless efforts by the British and French in 1915 and 1916 to capture the stronghold, they had not
emerged as victorious, evidently causing many war casualties in both of those attempts. The most

The Battle Of Vimy Ridge

On April 9, 1917, Canada sent out 100 000 fine men to serve and protect their country. To this day,
the battle of Vimy Ridge is still known as the day Canada became a nation. Despite the cataclysm
of the battle and the thousands of lost souls, Vimy Ridge is considered to be defining moments in
Canadian History. The Germans were in complete control of Vimy Ridge for over two years prior to
the Canadian onset. This enabled the Germans to strengthen their position, making them seem
unvanquishable. The German forces were appeared to be impregnable. Nor the British armada or the
French were able to vanquish the Germans. The French battled for over two years and suffered over

These men, who had fought so valiantly, were among the brightest and the toughest are land had to

as a strong unit; this was orchestrated by the Officer Corps to make sure that the fighting force

bonding between Officers and Men stronger than any other Army. Yes, we were a country, but
what is a country? This was the first opportunity to rally together from all provinces in such great
numbers since 1867, yes there was the Boer War but the numbers were small in comparison to

Vimy ridge is a defining moment in Canadian history because it was a demonstration of Canada's
abilities in war as Canada was recognized as an independent nation from Britain. Essentially, Vimy
Ridge was the first–time Canadian squadrons fought together in history. Canadians demonstrated
their meaningfulness by capturing Vimy Ridge after the French and British could not. "The
Germans considered the ridge to be impregnable. Over 160,000 French and British soldiers had
died in attacks on Vimy Ridge since October of 1914. Now the task of capturing it fell to the
Canadians. The troops once thought to be untrained, rowdy colonials, were now regarded as one of
