GRADE 5A @ CDNIS
The Rights of the Child
Dear Parents,
Students are in full swing as they investigate our current unit, the central idea
being, “Actions can support or deny access to children’s rights and equal
opportunities.” Our second meeting for our Literature Circles took place yesterday as
we all engage with the book “The Breadwinner.” I have continued reading aloud the
story of Iqbal as well. We are making connections to our own lives, deconstructing
recount texts and beginning to ask important questions that directly relate to the
central idea. This week students conducted research on a variety of child heroes and
are currently completing profiles of them; hopefully they will be posted on our blogs
early next week.
I encourage you to look at the class blog. The students have started discussing
Iqbal via blog commenting. Feel free to add your own thoughts and questions.
This week were fortunate enough to have a visit by a pair of authors, Sarah
Holbrook and Michael Salinger.
We completed our work on fractions this week (finally!!) and have now moved into
decimals and percentages. Students completed a summative project of their own
choosing to demonstrate their understandings of fractions.
Please refer to the CDNIS website for information on Chinese New Year
celebrations for next week. The entire week is a Dress Down Week ONLY if students
choose to wear Chinese clothing; if not, school uniforms are expected. The CNY
Flower Fair will be held on Tuesday. Please refer to the note on the school website
regarding our green initiatives for ordering tokens; all ordering is encouraged to be
done electronically to set a positive example for our students.
Kind Regards,
DJ MacPherson
