Editor's Notes

  1. As people come in, hand them a playing card. When ready to start, have people walk around and to music. When music stops, find someone and swap the card. After about 3 rounds, have people find their partners.
  2. Have everyone fold a folder shutter style. Explain that we will be creating a combo-foldable for take home reminder of what we learn today. Foldables provide a way to engage students in another way so as to keep their attention and give them a way of chunking information. Please understand that I would not do this many foldables in one day.What other kind of learning is there besides brain-based? I know that sounds kind of like a no-brainer, but sometimes we just teach to one specific part of the brain. In doing this, we miss a lot of learning styles.
  3. Think of the brain as a destination with information trying to get into on multiple lanes. If all information is taking the same lane – traffic jams will occur.As trainers and teachers, we must plan paths to the 5 lanes of learning to reach everyone when lesson planning. This is the key to differentiating instruction.Use a giant Foldable to explain what each of these lanes mean (this will also model the use of novel instruction). Also have participants make a layered bookSemantic: largely verbal and is used most often by teachers. When using semantic lane, use graphic organizers to chunk informationEpisodic: this is memory associated with a particular location. To utilize episodic memory, use tactile bulletin boards, change room arrangements, change the location from which you teach, teach in areas like playground, hallways, library. Procedural: this is memory associated with processes like riding a bike. It gives us the ability to multitask. Use this when trying to instill procedures (classroom procedures, safety precautions in labs)Automatic: memory associated with decoding skills like reading or math skills. This part of memory can be triggered by activating another lane. Music is very effective to create this kind of memoryEmotional: strongest path to memory. Use music, laughter, role-playing, enthusiasm to encourage this type of memory.
  4. Go to the poster that best represents the way you like to learn. Take a moment and jot down some activities on sticky notes that you enjoy based on the poster you go to. Do we have to administer some kind of test to figure out the learning style of each student? Heavens no! Just be aware the every learning style is present in your classroom and we need to plan our instruction to hit some of them everyday. Plus, people are combinations of learning styles. It is good to stretch the way in which they think so they become more well rounded. Now get your piece of colored paper that has a MI type on it and go to that poster.
