4. Theoneste Bagosora – Master
mind of the Genocide –
December 18th, 2008
He was sentenced to life in
prison along with 2
other co murders.
5. April 6th, 1994 – beginning of
the 3 month long genocide.
President Habyarimana – Hutu –plane
was shot down
Believed that Tutsis killed the
president
Sparked a man named Colonel Theoneste Bagosora
to start a movement to eliminate all Tutsis - began
killing Hutus that opposed his plan to eliminate the
Tutsis.
6. Between 500,000 and 1 million Tutsis and
Hutus where brutally murdered
Killed by – Machine guns, to machetes, all the
way to pocket knifes
Went city to city killing as they went
Was hope – Rwanda Patriotic Front
7. Formed in 1987 by Refugee Tutsis in Uganda –
those that were driven out by Hutus before
genocide
They were pushing back the Hutus into their
own capital Kigali.
On July 4th RPF captures
the capital
Two weeks later the
Hutus Surrender.
8. International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda – formed
to judge the people behind the genocide
June 8th, 2002 – still 115,000 to be judged – created
the Gacaca to do lesser judgments
Most of those people only got a couple years in
prison – just following commanders orders.
July 2005 – about 62,500 Hutus were released from
prison – had to go to a camp where they learned
Rwandan history, reconciliation, and justice.
