What does this mean for us?
A Disciple is one who, by following
Jesus, grows in their faith in Christ
and in so doing models and
teaches Christians the precepts of
the
Bible, prayer, doctrine, relationship,
Christian living, service, and
worship, to name the main ones.

Gary Collins (Christian Life
Coach)
If you're a Christian,
seeking to walk in the
footsteps of Jesus,
you'll approach every
aspect of your life
from this perspective.
Your commitment to
Christ will impact your
marriage, parenting,
lifestyle, values,
spending, time
management,
vocation ...

 Whether as a Christian or a digital explorer, you‟re a
newbie or an old hat, a rookie or a bishop (and in
the digital sphere, there will be some who fit in all
categories), we all have something to contribute to
the digital space. The concept of the digital as
„space‟ or a „culture‟ is important as we come from
a perspective in which:
 As Christians we live 24/7 for God, in whatever
spaces we live in or engage with…
 There is no such thing as „virtual‟ and „real‟ worlds:
only online and offline space/cultures – the
connection between the two is different for each
individual.
 We need to take seriously our Christian presence
both online and offline. Are we the same person,
living by the same values in both ‘spaces’?

Who is your audience?
http://www.rgbstock.com/photo/mjQsEks/Theatre+Seats
As a minister who IS your
audience? Local? Global?
 The human
audience will always
be the most
important. In
face, the whole
point of your SEO
plan is to bring in
that audience and
speak to
them, clearly, in their
own language
(p102)
 If you want to get
someone to take
action, you need to
get a commitment
first to something
small that will
activate a
persona, and then
you need to ask for a
commitment to
something later (p77)

Transformed Living…
The reason why some
Christians are so
constipated, miserable, judg
mental, misogynistic, religiou
s and up tight is that they
were like that before they
became Christians!
 Roger Ellis Essence: The Manifesto of Jesus 2012
Luke 6:45 (NIV)
A good man brings good
things out of the good
stored up in his heart, and
an evil man brings evil
things out of the evil stored
up in his heart. For the
mouth speaks what the
heart is full of.
“If an alien visited…”
… and all they
had to see was

Push/Pull Media…
THINK: Who is my
neighbour?
 What does it mean to „love your neighbour‟ in a world in which a
„friend‟ might as easily be the kid from down the street you grew up
with as a woman in Botswana whom you‟ve never seen in person and
only know in the context of Facebook status updates, photos, and
notes? What is the nature of community at prayer in a compline
service tweeted each evening by the cybermonks of a Virtual Abbey?
What is the ecclesiological and liturgical significant of worship in
various churches across the theological spectrum on the quasi-
3D, virtual reality site „Second Life‟? How can we negotiate spiritual
interaction in these contexts without losing sight of basic
elements of Christian faith expressed in traditional embodied and
geographically located practices of prayer, worship, and
compassion towards others?
 Tweet if You Heart Jesus, p.xiv
Social Media Surgeries
Carl Medearis
Relax, enjoy your friends. Enjoy
their company along with the
company of Jesus. Point him
out, freely, without fear or
intimidation. You’re not
responsible to sell him to them.
You‟re simply saying what
you‟ve seen. You're not the
judge. You‟re the witness.
Love our neighbour as
ourselves?
“…Out of a commitment to an ideal
of Christian relatedness that sees us
all as God’s children, each worthy of
attention and care.” (p.145)
 Where is the balance between conserving our
sanity/deeper relationships, and ensuring that all feel
valued? What about friendship ‘clearouts’?
The God Slot?

How do you feel about
these?
Darren Hill, Seed Resources
All these great Bible
verses arrive on my feed
without any context,
background or
explanation. As believers
we are fine with this, we
of course know the
context to any text that
appears online… don‟t
we? But what about
everyone else?

1 Peter 3:15 (The Message)
 Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks
why you‟re living the way you are, and always
with the utmost courtesy. Keep a clear
conscience before God so that when people
throw mud at you, none of it will stick. They‟ll end
up realizing that they’re the ones who need a
bath.

Don’t overthink. Running through
committees, endless drafts and approval
processes to get a response out there
can cause far more damage than good.
As long as you have taken the time to
assess the situation and can take a
rational, respectful tone in your
response, even an awkward response is
OK to start with, and buys you time to
continue to respond to the problem.
Don‟t forget…

Some good advice from
@ianaspin:
 Care for others - genuinely
 Know that the world doesn‟t revolve around you
 Be „remarkable‟, be different
 Earn the right to have others take notice of you
 Be grateful if ONE person cares what you‟re doing
 Have something to say that matters
 Do stuff that matters – make an impact
 Strive to bring value to everyone you connect with
 Be fantastically generous with our time, money, and kindness
 Be outrageously committed to making the world better
 It‟s all about relationships – build & nurture them
 Thanks @ianaspin (http://bigbible.org.uk/2010/10/the-eleven-commandments/)

Editor's Notes

  1. 1 HOUR 30
  2. The notion of “being present” – e.g. how are finding everyone being behind computers these sessions…
  3. Remember the SOCIAL in social media (not so much the ‘technology’) – see people/users feature on this globe…
  4. Within the church we need to think about how we engage more - this is the model many churches have now… (as a educational developer, I note that many teachers do this too….)
  5. Can we move towards something more like this – what does this mean for church leaders, especially you as youth leaders…?How see this working in practice?
  6. How might the church learn from this?
  7. Me, aside from one on first page, first 4-5 pages are all me… that’s largely because I’ve taken the time to be online…
  8. Note importance of images – what happened when I changed my website – lost links/visitors … now slowly building up again…
  9. These I need to work on – these are not great (and YouTube is the 2nd busiest search engine after Google)..
  10. Choose some search terms to search for yourself… and see where you’re coming from… http://www.inboundnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/b2b_long_tail.gif
  11. See the “tighter” choice of networks…
  12. My PhD was published under my full name – before I stopped using it – but it picks up lots of the Keep Calm stuff… so look for different variations … be aware of variations… NYT, LATimes, etc- what about (and proactive on Wikipedia)
  13. Couple of other places you might want to look…
  14. (Can do this live with a couple of people…) Got to look for Pete Phillips in images ;-)
  15. Value – about yourself, and your work – this let’s Google do the work for you, so you’re not having to scan for your own name, etc…
  16. What does it mean to be a disciple…
  17. How does this work in the digital space – so everything we do reflects on faith, etc…
  18. Be fresh, be honest, be creative, give God the glory.. 3 minutes
  19. e.g. Facebook photos, tags, etc..
  20. Everything we do is PUBLIC! Original image sxc.hu
  21. How might this affect what you do online?
  22. … it may be hard work – but as training as a coach has taught me – there’s nowhere to start but here. As a historian I could demonstrate that you are a product of your time, geography, class, culture, etc… every interaction that we have has the potential to be transformative – and I’m keen on online interactions, but what are those conversations based in?
  23. Remember also what we said yesterday – take time to listen and to CARE … it’s not all about broadcasting you…
  24. We may be the only Bible that some people ever see … What do your priorities appear to be? Does God seem to have a place in your life? Demonstrate life as it is, rather than how you wish it would be… Relentlessly positive? How do we also share some of the difficulties of life – be real, allow people to connect with us [some of best sermons I’ve ever heard are people telling me are how they’ve dealt with difficult times… demonstrated that they are still pursuing the answers… ]… sentences end in a question rather than in a full stop?http://www.rgbstock.com/photo/2dQMJYj/We+Are+Not+Alone
  25. POST IT NOTES OR FLIPCHART?Integrity (own comments “I feel, etc.)Self-control (consider consequences of interpretation – inc revisited later) Patience (expectations for response times)Authenticity (consistent to “you”)Trust (information can be out there, don’t speak on others behalf unless permission)Non-manipulative (audience aware, do someone down, bad spin; “If you love Jesus share this”)Respect (encounter different opinions – think through reactions); Good Manners; not ‘entitled’ to respect – respect others first.. Treat as you expect to be treated“Freedom of Speech” – think carefully; LibelSelf-awareness – context; read differently – can you “hear” tone of voiceDon’t press “send” in anger …Kindness – encourage online, messages of supportTransparency – do we know the source of all this… Aliases? Who’s saying what? Accountability. Who are they?
  26. The core one for me is “authenticity” - come to know yourself, what gifts and passions God has given you, and look to live those out authentically & with integrity online… what I call a ‘digital fingerprint’ – you were made to be unique, so be unique … and look for others to engage with in that area… be passionate about what you’re sharing…
  27. FLIPCHART DISCUSSIONhttp://kezi.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/fruit-of-the-spirit.jpg
  28. Do we worry about our measures?
  29. At all times – remember!
  30. Thinking through how things have changed – we don’t PUSH the message at people – we seek to be intriguing and draw them in… NOT convinced by the 7 times Keith mentioned … but it is certainly about building up message…
  31. (Talk about Pam, Jackie, Tanya, etc… ) Brings us to the bigger question… which I want us to discuss – who is our neighbour… we’re in a church which talks a lot about embodiment, and Jesus came/incarnational… but we are part of a global world (look more in ‘do’ as we look at e.g. international efforts … think also we live in a world where people move around a lot – how does online allow us to keep connected/make longer term friendships, etc.? Think also – it’s a space where the past is continuously documented – what do we do with that knowledge? Place/location (geography, history, socially, globally) – being truly present where God has placed us – being willing to ‘stick around’ and commit to an area – how can we be a placemaker in the digital space? In ‘say’ we’ll think more about learning the etiquette of the online spaces… and seek to fill those with salt & light…

  33. Question of time commitment – give 2-3 minutes to discuss the question – again no right/wrong answers, but possibilities for engaging without getting lost in the technology – ensure that you are its master rather than its slave… DISCUSSMission should not be a guilt-response “done my quota today” to make ourselves feel better. Jesus: “Everyone you choose to love. Everyone you come across and choose not to ignore. Everyone God sends you. Everyone. The need to give sacrificially. Early church – was notable for its social care – looking not only after their own poor, but all …HOW DO WE DEAL WITH THE FOLLOWING 2 ISSUES FROM A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE?
  34. The danger of the ‘God Slot’ … we’ve done our bit of mission for today … and there we are – done?
  35. Darren, who until recently worked for Scripture Union … asked strong questions on the Big Bible site – what is the VALUE of these tweets – to ourselves and to others … and that this is not a NEW thing … his mother used to keep a box with single verses in it that she’d pull out on a (bad) day … a modern/faster/more shareable way of that…
  36. And what about disagreements between Christians… especially in Biblical interpretation? http://www.seedresources.com/view/images/stripes-of-colour
  37. We want to be salt & light in the world – how are we to be different – we’ll look at this more tomorrow, but there’s a good opportunity to look to the Bible for the kinds of behaviours we want to see online, the aspects of our lives, and our Christian lives that we want to highlight (including the difficulties!)
  38. You may have seen recentlythis post by Giles Fraser, which certainly caused somewhat of a stir on Twitter/Facebook around me (that’s how I knew about it) … Comment is Free is designed to be polemical really… drawing a range of responses via Twitter, Facebook and people feeling stirred up to create a blog post, and by Sat evening there were over 300 comments – some feeling that he’d been ‘ungracious’, created a ‘straw man’, etc… some responding in kind, some seeking to demonstrate grace, some holding back until their first anger had passed, etc.. Others thought it was on the right track – we can’t be like ‘Ned Flanders’…
  39. Here are notes from only a couple of days before where we’d discussed what made for good (Christian) conversation online, and how we would deal with disagreements…
  40. DISCUSS – Think of issues that have divided the church – how can we present a more united response – Biblically & practically? How would we go back to The Source to be more confident without bible bashing?http://www.seedresources.com/view/images/live-the-word-b-w-small
  41. This was kinda summed up at a recent conference…
  42. Ensure that what we’re thinking about is not just about individual ‘brownie points’ but bigger/community pictures…
  43. If you are working for an organisation – e.g. a church – ensure that people can feel ‘free’ to go ahead and represent you …not having
  44. Social Media shouldn’t be an add-on, but should be considered in everything else that you’re doing… put links to the pages/Twitter name, etc. in church notice sheets, and publicity, etc… (e.g. why name tags important for this week – many of you know each other, but we have speakers in & out …)
  45. … and don’t forget the cat.
  46. Don’t forget also want words… though are many essays re balance between e.g. social action/sharing the gospel…
  47. Also need to take time out to refresh ourselves … learn to delegate, learn to manage our time online, etc.. What can see as pros/cons of this? DISCUSS
  48. 2.5 years ago Ian Aspin said this – still think correct – what would your 10 commandments re engaging online be?
  49. These I WOULD like to share… http://www.freebibleimages.org/illustrations/moses-sinai/
  50. This is something we’ve done a couple of times with Big Bible – love to see more – great way to get people to engage with the Bible – think about how to “change” the words to apply in the digital age…
  51. So – what do you think? What does it make you think about engaging online, how we share our faith, how we make Jesus real to people?
