Classroom size is important for children's development and learning. Research shows that in classrooms that are too small, children behave more aggressively and have higher rates of illness. They are also less focused and interact less with others. The recommended space per child is 50 square feet. Additionally, allowing children opportunities to move around different learning centers while visiting special classroom areas is beneficial. When given this mobility, many children learn significantly more than when sitting still. Movement helps children acquire new information more effectively.

• Room Size. Children require adequate space in
order to move, grow, and learn. In classrooms
that are too small, children behave more
aggressively and have a higher incidence of
illness. They are less focused, engage in more
aimless wandering, and interact less with others
(Ruopp et al., 1979). 50 feet of usable space per
child should be provided (APHA & AAP, 1992).

• Provide opportunities for children to move around
while visiting learning centers and other special
classroom areas. Most of us have the mistaken
impression that children learn best when sitting
still, but research now proves that many children need
extensive mobility while learning. These children learn
significantly more if they move from one area to
another as they acquire new information.
