3. Davidic Covenant Class, by now you have seen the chart listing the 8 major covenants found in scripture. This week’s lesson will deal with one of those covenants which will be the foundation for the remaining lessons, the Davidic Covenant. Keep in mind ,it is God who makes covenant with man and not man making covenant with God. Man does not define his relationship with God on his terms. We simply accept what God graciously offers. I felt it necessary to advise you on an important point regarding our study.
4. Davidic Covenant Deuteronomy 7:9 9Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
5. Davidic Covenant God made this covenant with David in part to fulfill a desire within David’s heart and ultimately His sovereign will for both the nation of Israel and the world. The covenant states that God would fulfill His purpose through David’s son who would proceed out of his loins.
6. Davidic Covenant As you read II Samuel 7:1-17, you will notice it promises a Kingdom and a house for David through his son. This “son” has what is called a double reference. God will speak to, or about people and events then current, but also address things, events and people on a prophetical scope. This is can be determined by the passage in question or by another writer in scripture not by our own preconceptions.
7. Davidic Covenant Within the context of the book of Samuel, Solomon is the son who would build God’s house, and this he did. Within the context of biblical prophecy Jesus of Nazareth is the greater son who would build a greater house to the name of the LORD. This house would include the church, the nation of Israel, and the gentile nations who accept Christ during his millennial (1000 year) reign on Earth in Jerusalem.
8. Davidic Covenant This is determined from comparing Hebrews chapter 1:5-7 and chapter 3: 1-7 with II Samuel 7. Yes people this covenant has Christological implications. Everything in its’ finality points to, is and will be fulfilled in JESUS. I will leave the balance of exploration of this covenant to you the student. Psalms 89 and 132 and Daniel chapter 2:44-45 and Acts chapter 2:24-31
