What kind of constructor are you?
The most famous Polish science fiction author and relatively unknown to many in the english speaking world.
Stories about robots in the far future, Trurl and Klapauciusz, who make incredible creations.
I think these stories provide useful metaphors for how we think about construction today.
Perhaps you think the first is an option… Lem’s tales provide a cautionary tale about technology disembodied from progress, and from understanding what progress means.
The robots only reason for contruction is each other... And compeittion for its own sake And we will see already some appearances of this today.
But nowhere is there any real repsentation of time or resource in the stories...
Trurl decides to make a machine that can create anything beginning with the letter N.
He decides to show it off to K who then asks it to do nothing… It doesnt seem to be doing anything but eventually things start disappearing.
Where do consequences lead? Depends on the escort. http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/s/stanislaw_lem.html
Estimates can be tyranny… Woody Zuil
Trurl sends K a robot that meets all his wishes…
K asks the robot to produce a Trurl. K beats up the robot because he can. The robot who is actually Trurl tries to convince K that he is Trurl but K doesnt believe him, or he does. Trurl escapes and later when K visits him, K can see that it was indeed Trurl. The funny thing was K had the same idea..
Not even ideas are new!
Trurl’s machine cant add 2+2 … it’s 7.
What did they learn from this? Nothing...it was just another robot.
