Enzyme Activity
SimilaseProduct Code: SIMIL (90 caps)Product Code: SIMI2 (180 caps) Proprietary digestive enzyme formula active across a broad pH range. High potency, vegetarian formula Broad spectrum activity Relieves occasional gas, bloating, and indigestion. Superior support of carbohydrate, protein, fat, and fiber digestion.
Gluten A combination of gliadin and glutenin proteins found in grass-related grains, like wheat, barley, and rye Oatmeal is sometimes linked to gluten intolerance, but the latest consensus is that oatmeal doesn’t contain gluten, but may be contaminated during processing Common in bread, pasta, and cereal Hidden sources Salad dressing Cold cuts Frozen yogurt Toothpaste Gum Envelopes
Casein A protein found in dairy products Common in milk, cheese, and yogurt Not same as lactose (milk sugar) Hidden sources Margarine Caramel or butter flavoring Deli meats Jelly beans Some fast food French fries
Similase GFCFProduct Code: SIM1 Broad-spectrum enzymes to promote complete digestion of fats, carbohydrates, fiber, and protein Active across a wide pH range Includes Dipeptidyl Peptidase IV (DPP IV) to digest hidden gluten and casein in the diet.
Optimize Digestion If pancreatic enzyme support is required, consider: Two-phase, chemical-free combination Hydrochloric acid (e.g., Betaine HCl, Glutamic acid HCl) and/or Pepsin (1:3000) Pancreatin Lipase (2,000–14,000 USP units TID) Amylase (25,000–180,000 USP units TID) Protease (25,000–180,000 USP units TID) Ox bile extract 65–130 mg TID with meals Pancreatic enzymes should be formulated in a delayed-release matrix to prevent deactivation of enzymes by stomach acids.
Panplex 8Product Code: PAN66 (60 tabs) High potency pancreatin, an enzyme complex containing protease, amylase, and lipase 8 times stronger than the minimum activity specified by the USP. Helps digest the full range of food types, including fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Formulated for release in the intestines where optimal benefits occur.
Panplex 2-PhaseProduct Code: PAN64 (60 tabs) Product Code: PAN65 (180 tabs) Dual-action formula provides support for gastric and intestinal phases of digestion. Phase I support provides hydrochloric acid (HCl), from betaine HCl and L-glutamic acid HCl, and the protein-digesting enzyme, pepsin for release in the stomach. Phase II ingredients include high potency pancreatin and bile salts in a unique, chemical-free delayed-release matrix.
Step 2:Support healthy intestinal lining
Permeability FactorsProduct Code: PERM4 (90 softgels) Clinically studied nutrients, phospholipids, and essential fatty acids provide nutritional support for intestinal mucosa Contains a high level of glutamine – clinically shown to support healthy intestinal barrier function. Standard of care for many naturopathic physicians Gluten free formula – ideal for those with food sensitivities.
RhizinateProduct Code: RHIZIRhizinate Sugarless Product Code: RHIZ4 Rhizinate 3X Product Code: RHIZ45 Glycyrrhizic acid-free formula provides only the beneficial effects of licorice Chewable formula works naturally with enzymes in saliva to support digestive health Best tasting DGL; 3X has delicious German-chocolate flavor Helps relieve stomach discomfort by stimulating and accelerating natural protective factors in the digestive tract Boosts the production of mucin, a natural compound that coats and protects the lining of the stomach and intestines 3X is a potent 10:1 extract; provides immediate benefits and maximum absorption in chewable form. Includes glycine to help keep the stomach lining strong.
Step 3: Support elimination for mild cleansing and detox
Blue HeronProduct Code: BLU12 (120 caps) Gluten-free blend of dietary fiber, nutritional herbs, and probiotic microflora for convenient, effective, and gentle intestinal support Four unique sources of fiber Flax, psyllium, driedplum, rice bran Soothing GI blend Marshmallow, slippery elm root, fenugreek Detoxification Triphala Microflora support Probiotics Enzymes Papain
Step 4: Re-establish a healthy balance of intestinal microflora

Editor's Notes

  1. Welcome. Thanks for coming out this evening. Self intro. On the surface, the topic tonight is digestion. But the real goal of this presentation is to elaborate on the interconnections between digestion and chronic disease, and on whole health strategies that healthcare practitioners can deploy to address not only the mild digestive complaints that frequent the aging gut, but also to look at how the restoration of digestive function is at the core of restoring health of the whole person. Anti-aging is a popular category these days. But what does it really mean?
  2. Also BioZyme:Two tablets before each meal.Pancreatic enzymes 10X††325mg*Trypsin75 mg*Papain50 mg*Bromelain (2,400 G.D.U./g)16mg*Amylase10 mg*Lipase10 mg*Lysozyme (egg)10mg*Chymotrypsin2 mg
  3. Inside the body, the low pH of the gastric environment and exposure to stomach acid are the primary factors that can kill of viable probiotic cultures.First generation pharmaceutical enteric coatings utilized chemicals that, while effective, were unsuitable for “natural” products.Advances in formulation technology now allow for precise protection and dissolution of natural “enteric” coatings incorporating ingredients such as gelatin, pectin and lecithin.
  4. So we have a tendency to think that if a little is good, then more is better. Well, you know and I know that is not always true. There is a therapeutic window for most herbs and nutritional supplements and certainly for drugs, so why should it be different for probiotics. And yet when you look where some of the research is going, and when you look at products on shelves, we’re seeing formulations with absolutely massive numbers of CFUs.5 billion isn’t enough, we need 10 billion, 20, 30 60 billion and up. We have adopted what, in my opinion, is a very ham-handed more-is-better approach to probiotics supplementation. This has happened in large part, I think, because the sophistication of the topic does not lend itself to easy product differentiation in terms of labeling and marketing and competition. A consumer is not likely to enough knowledge to recognize a thoughtfully formulated product. Heck, even most physicians don’t know enough. The industry itself doesn’t know enough. And so we go with what we know. We can put more. People understand more. Their product has 10m billion CFU, well, we’re putting in 25 billion for the same price. Person looking at the label thinks that’s a stronger or more efficacious product, more bang for the buck.Well this is a big mistake. You wouldn’t treat an iron supplement that way. These are live organisms, and they exist in a delicate balance in elaborate communication with our immune system. Does it really make sense to inundate our bodies with huge numbers of CFU of one or two strains. How does that restore balance to this system? In fact, if you look at some of the research, by researchers like Dr. IichirohOhhiria, you find that this strategy can backfire, that inundating the system in this way can actually activate T and B cells in a way that resembles how they would fight bad bacteria.
  5. Outside the body, exposure to heat, light and oxygen are the primary factors that destroy viable probiotic bacteria.
