Hi everybody !
Today I'm going to present you the legend of the loch ness monster, which is, I think, a real mistery for everybody in this room !
Indeed, a lot of people are asking themselves if this legend is a myth or a reality. That's why I chose to deal with this problematic all along this presentation.
Firstly, I think it's a good thing to talk a little about the origin of this monster. Where does he come from ?
As you can guess, the loch ness monster is supposed to live in the Loch Ness Lake.
Loch Ness is a long, narrow lake southwest of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. It is the second largest loch in Scotland by surface area and the largest by volume :Its surface is 52 ft above sea level.
The water is dark and murky due to the high levels of peat in the surrounding soil. (=a compact dark deposit of partially decomposed vegetable matter saturated with water: found in uplands, and in temperate and cold regions and used as a fertilizer)
So here you can see a map of Scotland, in which we can see, in this red circle, the lake of the loch ness, where Nessie is supposed to live.
Now lets talk about history, to understand when this legend comes from.
Since the Roman times the legend of a mysterious sea creature has been alive through numerous sightings of the animal. When the Romans came to Scotland in the first century the Picts were the main inhabitants. They were fascinated by animals and spoke of a strange beast swimming in one of the lakes in the Scottish highlands. The first references go back to the sixth century when a man was supposedly saved from the swimming beast of Loch Ness.
In the 1930s a new road was built along the shore of Loch Ness. In 1933 , a couple who was driving along this road reported an enormous animal splashing on the surface of the lake. In the following months newspapers sent reporters and photographers to the lake to make observations. Even footprints of an enormous animal were found.
