True Friendliness Is From The Heart

C. S. Lewis has been quoted having said, “Friendship is born at that moment
when one person says to another, ‘What! You, too? I thought I was the only
one.’”

What an excellent illustration of friendship. We should be ever so grateful to the
God of Heaven for the blessing of relationships. Imagine how empty life would be
without the comfort, encouragement, and protection offered by a true friend. Notice the
adjective, TRUE, which was placed before the term, friend. Most all of us have
“acquaintances” maybe numbering in the hundreds. That is good, but there is a vast
difference in an acquaintance and a true friend. What is that difference? The LEVEL of
friendliness is what makes the difference.
Anyone can say something kind, open a door for someone, or even send a card
to say hello. True friendliness is show in the face of adversity. The prodigal son no
doubt had many “friends” while he was spending his inheritance, but when the money
ran out, so did the “friends” (Luke 15:11-32). Another good example of “friendliness”
is shown in the advice Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the
Naamathite gave to the patriarch Job (Job 2:11ff). The old saying, “With friends like
these, who needs enemies” is very applicable to Job’s “friends.” The difference goes
deep down to the HEART of the matter.
Have you taken the time to analyze the contrast that Jesus made between the
Old Law and the New Law (the Law of Christ) recorded in the sermon on the mount
(Matthew 5-7)? Take for example the first comparison He made:
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and
whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That
whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the
judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the
council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire (Matthew
5:21).
Did you catch it? The Jews were not to commit the “act” of murder, but now
Jesus says that we are not to be angry without a just cause. Clearly, anger is in the
mind (i.e. Biblical heart), while murder is a physical act. Consider what Jesus said
about keeping His commandments: “If you LOVE (emph B K) Me, keep My
commandments” (John 14:15). What motivates us to show friendliness today?
The “Golden Rule” can be described as true friendliness from the heart. Far too
many have followed the rules of the world instead of God’s rule. “Therefore, all things
whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the
law and the prophets” (Matthew 7:12). True friendliness is offering someone else that
which we ourselves would desire. What would this involve?

It will take thinking on our part of what it
is we truly want. This is easily illustrated by
watching a young child with some birthday money.
He or she may change their minds at least twelve
times as to what it is that they really want to buy
and even after something purchased, they may
decide that they have not “thought this through.”
Sadly, many never seem to grow out of this childish
phase. People walk into an auto dealership and
allow the smells and professional sales pitches to
convince them to purchase a vehicle that may have
them saying in a few weeks, “I did not really think
this through.” Did you know that considering the
cost is a Biblical concept?
If any man come to me, and hate not his
father, and mother, and wife, and children, and
brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he
cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not
bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my
disciple. For which of you, intending to build a
tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost,
whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply,
after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to
finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him (Luke
14:26-29).
It will take the tearing down some of
those protective barriers. The Bible tells us that
where our treasure is, there is where our hearts will
be also (Matthew 6:21). Trust must be turned over
to the Lord if we are to have a home with Him
(Luke 18:18-23). Many have lost opportunities to
build true and lasting friendships for fear of getting
hurt? We can help one another by making others
feel comfortable enough to “open up” to us by
being trustworthy. It has been said that friends are
like good health; you don't realize what a gift they
are until you lose them. May God help us to build
true friendships in Christ, by practicing true
friendliness from the heart (Proverbs 18:24).

mother, continues at the Sanctuary Hospice House.
