The Ride To Beat Hunger's Sponsorship Presentation
1. Hunger is real.
It affects real people in real places,
around the world and here at home.
We are determined to
make an impact in the
battle with hunger, and
we need your help to make it happen.
2. Our assignment.
Between April 22 and May 22, 2012,
Vero Beach minister Scott Alexander
will undertake a demanding physical
challenge – a 3,300-mile cross
country bike trip dedicated to
focusing attention on the severe
problems of hunger.
3. 1 man. 2 wheels.
3,300 miles. 925,000,000
hungry people.
And a corps of passionate volunteers
determined to make a difference.
So how can you get involved?
4. We need sponsors.
The success of this endeavor will be a special tribute to
the important Sponsors who help us get the
word out and reach our ambitious $50,000+
goal.
Let’s talk about…
• Our Mission
• Our Beneficiaries
• The Rider & The Ride
• Why You Should Help
• How You Can Help
5. Our Mission.
Beginning on Sunday, April 22, 2012 in Costa Mesa, California
and ending Tuesday, May 22, 2012 in Vero Beach, Florida, Rev.
Scott Alexander will bicycle all 3,300 miles, challenging
organizations and individuals of the Vero Beach community
and beyond to donate money to help beat hunger – both
locally and globally. Friends, neighbors, and concerned people
will join Rev. Alexander for all or part of the last four days of
the ride, “bringing him home” from Savannah to Vero Beach.
Our goal is to raise $50,000-$100,000 – with half going to our
local Harvest Food and Outreach Center and half going to Stop
Hunger Now, an established international organization which
packages millions of simple meal packets to be distributed
around the world.
6. Our Mission.
Two highlights of The Ride To Beat Hunger will be…
• On May 22, Rev. Alexander will arrive for a “Homecoming
Splash Party” presented by Waldo's Restaurant located
inside the Historic Driftwood Inn, adjacent to
Vero Beach’s Humiston Park. Hundreds of
people (perhaps even more) will assemble at
Waldo’s for the arrival rally, demonstrating
their commitment to beating hunger and
their willingness to do even more, like…
• On June 9, 2012, Stop Hunger Now will send a truckload of
food products and a “meal packet assembly team” to Vero
Beach, where we will organize volunteers of all ages in a
one day effort to create up to 100,000 meal packets for
hungry children around the world.
7. Our Mission.
An energetic corps of Rotarian volunteers from Indian River
County have undertaken to enlist the support and
involvement from scores of other Rotary Clubs along the
3,300 mile trek. Other groups, near and far, are lending
their support as well, including the Vero Beach
Ministerial Association.
Already, a talented, energetic volunteer team is
supporting this ride and encouraging our neighbors
(and anyone else who will listen) to come along and
help beat hunger.
8. Our Beneficiaries.
Funds raised by The Ride To Beat Hunger will be shared
equally between two organizations who have
demonstrated their ability to beat hunger, locally and
around the world.
• Our local Harvest Food and Outreach Center
(harvestfoodandoutreach.org)
• The international group Stop Hunger Now
(stophungernow.org)

important organizations, visit our website

9. The Rider & The Ride.
Rev. Scott W. Alexander, minister of the Unitarian
Universalist Fellowship of Vero Beach, a proud Rotarian,
and an avid cyclist, is undertaking a demanding month-long,
3,300 mile bike ride across America to beat hunger.
This demanding ride across America He is a veteran of "fund-raising by

emotionally, and spiritually. There will bike," having biked cross country in
be days on this ride that push me to my
limits as a human being. But, each of 2005 and 2008 raising money for La

ride a bike. The next question is, “What
can you do to help?”
- Rev. Scott Alexander Rev. Alexander is 62 years old and lives
with both severe arthritis and an
artificial knee, but knows he is up to the
physical challenge of this ride.
10. The Rider & The Ride.
The ride spans 10 states and covers 3,300 miles. Each daily
ride segment averages 115.5 miles. There are two “rest
days” planned during the 31-day journey - one in
Albuquerque, NM and the other in Ft. Smith, Arkansas.

will be joined by local friends,
neighbors, and supporters.
11. Why You Should Help.
Reliable estimates tell us that 31.3% of Indian River County’s
children are “food insecure.” Across the Treasure Coast, the child
food insecurity rate is 30.5 percent, with more than 36,290
students uncertain about the source of their next meal.
In 2009, 43.6 million Americans (14.3 percent) were living in
poverty. 15.5 million (20.7 percent) of children under the age of 18
were and 3.4 million (8.9 percent) of seniors 65 and older lived in
poverty.
The planet has more than enough food for all. Still, a child dies
of hunger every 5 seconds somewhere in the world.
That’s 17,000+ children every day.
925,000,000 people (nearly 1 in 7 people worldwide)
are undernourished.
