Sunset cove phase 2 advocacy

  1. 1.  12 acre site  Spectacular views of Jamaica Bay and NYC  Located at extreme south end of Broad Channel  NYC Parks land adjacent to NPS wetlands  Wetland cove and upland area  Unique Opportunity to restore Degraded shoreline area
  2. 2.  Small Marina since the 40’s  Marina greatly expanded thru illegal fill in 1970’s and 80’s.  Court action at both state and Federal level  Resulted in 1998 decision to reduce size  2008 decision for additional violations led to state acquisition  2008 Land put under jurisdiction of NYC DCAS
  3. 3.  Broad Channel Civic Association led effort to have area deeded to NYC Parks.  Worked thru Councilman Ulrich’s office to have transferred to NYC Parks in 2009  BCCA passed unanimous resolution in February of 2010 endorsing wetlands restoration, upland forest, walking trails, boardwalk plan.  BCCA plan submitted to NYC PARKS RFEI—only plan submitted
  4. 4.  Effort led by Broad Channel Civic Association  Letters of support obtained from ◦ Senator Schumer *** ◦ Congressman Meeks ◦ Congressman Jeffries ◦ State Senator Addabbo ◦ Assemblyman Goldfeder ◦ Councilman Ulrich Federal lobbying coordinated with Harbor Coalition
  5. 5.  NYC Parks-Lead Agency  NYC DEP  NYS DEC  NPS  Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers  American Littoral Society
  6. 6.  Create shoreline wetlands  High Marsh  Berm/Dune tidal break  Upland maritime forest  Walking Trails  Interactive Boardwalk over wetlands  Oyster studies
  7. 7.  Boardwalk out across the wetlands to viewing/learning platform  360 degree views of restored wetlands and forest and Jamaica Bay  Pathway access to waters edge  Ramp out to Eco Dock to be used for oyster studies and school group access  Oyster Cages to be hung across the cove from
