Presentation
The Gift of Fire
When the world was young, humans did not have fire yet. They lived
in complete darkness and cold. They could not cook their food.
During this age, the chief among the Greek gods, Jupiter, was not so
sure of his powers over his people. He was fearful that another god more
powerful than he would overrule him. So he kept the secret of fire to
himself. He kept the fire in his kingdom on Mount Olympus.
Jupiter had a trusted adviser, Prometheus. Prometheus saw how the
people suffered in darkness. He pitied them as they worked with their
bare hands.
So he said to Jupiter, “Come, let us give these poor creatures the gift
of fire. With fire, they will not need to suffer from the cold. With fire, they
can make tools that make work easier. With fire, they can make weapons
to protect them from wild animals.”
But Jupiter said, “No.” He was fearful that if he gave humans the gift
of fire, they would become very powerful; they might think themselves as
his equal, Jupiter, the king.
So he did not allow Prometheus to take any fire down to earth. But
Prometheus had a big heart. He was sorry to see people suffer. So he
stole some fire from Jupiter and hid this in a reed. He carried this secretly
down to earth. Prometheus taught them how to shape tools and weapons
over wheel for travel. People’s lives became easier and more comfortable.
When Jupiter learned about what Prometheus did, he was very angry.
He ordered two giants to catch Prometheus. The giants did. They tied him
to a big rock on the top of Mount Caucasus. There, they left Prometheus
to suffer Jupiter’s punishment.
Every morning, a huge eagle would swoop down to Prometheus and
eat his liver. Prometheus was helpless because his hands were tied. Every
night, his liver would grow again to be eaten by the eagle the following
morning. His suffering seemed endless.
The people were thankful to Prometheus for bringing to them the gift
of fire. Above all, they were thankful to him for his endless sacrifice. They
knew that if Prometheus had not given them the gift of fire, they would
still be living in darkness and hardship.
Analysis and Discussion
1. Have the pupils answer the following:
a. Who was the Greek God who kept the fire for himself? (Jupiter)
b. Why did Jupiter keep the fire for himself? (He is afraid that the
people on earth will become powerful and might think of
themselves as his equal.)
c. Who tried to help people by giving them the gift of fire?
(Prometheus)
d. Why did Prometheus did his best to steal the fire for the people?
(He pitied them. He wanted to make their lives better and easier.)
e. Looking at Jupiter’s reactions and words, how will you describe his
character? Why? (Selfish, because he does not want to share.
Hungry for power because he is afraid that somebody will be more
powerful than him)
f. How will you describe Prometheus? (He is generous or kind; he
pitied the people and did his best to help them.)
2. Ask:
a. What made you say that Prometheus was kind or generous?
(Through his words and action)
b. What action? (He helped the people even if he knows he will be
punished.)
c. What made you say that Jupiter was selfish? (Also through his
Actions and words.) (He did not want to share the fire. He
punished Prometheus for sharing the fire. He is afraid that
people might think they are his equal.)

  • 3. c. Oral Reading 4. Choose a good reader to read the story. B. Developmental Activities Presentation The Gift of Fire When the world was young, humans did not have fire yet. They lived in complete darkness and cold. They could not cook their food. During this age, the chief among the Greek gods, Jupiter, was not so sure of his powers over his people. He was fearful that another god more powerful than he would overrule him. So he kept the secret of fire to himself. He kept the fire in his kingdom on Mount Olympus. Jupiter had a trusted adviser, Prometheus. Prometheus saw how the people suffered in darkness. He pitied them as they worked with their bare hands. So he said to Jupiter, “Come, let us give these poor creatures the gift of fire. With fire, they will not need to suffer from the cold. With fire, they can make tools that make work easier. With fire, they can make weapons to protect them from wild animals.” But Jupiter said, “No.” He was fearful that if he gave humans the gift of fire, they would become very powerful; they might think themselves as his equal, Jupiter, the king. So he did not allow Prometheus to take any fire down to earth. But Prometheus had a big heart. He was sorry to see people suffer. So he stole some fire from Jupiter and hid this in a reed. He carried this secretly down to earth. Prometheus taught them how to shape tools and weapons over wheel for travel. People’s lives became easier and more comfortable. When Jupiter learned about what Prometheus did, he was very angry. He ordered two giants to catch Prometheus. The giants did. They tied him to a big rock on the top of Mount Caucasus. There, they left Prometheus to suffer Jupiter’s punishment. Every morning, a huge eagle would swoop down to Prometheus and eat his liver. Prometheus was helpless because his hands were tied. Every night, his liver would grow again to be eaten by the eagle the following morning. His suffering seemed endless. The people were thankful to Prometheus for bringing to them the gift of fire. Above all, they were thankful to him for his endless sacrifice. They knew that if Prometheus had not given them the gift of fire, they would still be living in darkness and hardship.
