Relationship Orientation in BehaviourRelationship Orientation in Behaviour
The FIRO-B tool provides information about
three fundamental dimensions of interpersonal
needs:
INCLUSION
• is about recognition, belonging, participation,
• contact with others, and how you relate to groups
CONTROL
• concerns influence, leadership,
• responsibility, and decision making
AFFECTION
• is about closeness, warmth, sensitivity, openness,
• and how you relate to others
Fundamental InterpersonalFundamental Interpersonal

BehaviourBehaviour
The FIRO-B assessment also indicates your
preferences in regard to two distinct aspects
of each of these
• EXPRESSED BEHAVIOR
• How much do you prefer to initiate the behavior?
• How do you actually behave with respect to the
three fundamental interpersonal needs?
• What is your comfort level engaging in the
behaviors associated with the three needs?

WANTED BEHAVIOR
• How much do you prefer others to
take the initiative?
• How much do you want to be on the
receiving end of those behaviors?
• What is your comfort level when
others direct their behaviors
associated with the three needs to
you?

Locus of ControlLocus of Control
What is Locus of Control?
According to Philip Zimbardo (a famous
psychologist),
"A locus of control orientation is a belief about
whether the outcomes of our actions are contingent
on what we do (internal control orientation) or on
events outside our personal control (external control
orientation)." (Zimbardo, 1985)
The concept was developed by Julian Rotter in
the 1960
Locus of ControlLocus of Control
External Locus of
Control
• Individual believes
that his/her
behavior is guided
by fate, luck, or
other external
circumstances
Internal Locus of
Control
• Individual believes
that his/her
behavior is guided
by his/her personal
decisions and
efforts.
Thus, Locus of control can be understood as bipolar
construct, ranging from external causes to internal causes
Shift from External toShift from External to
InternalInternal
• external OR internal expectations to
evaluate yourself
• do what others want to do most of
the time
• seek approval so much that it is a
“must”
• Do you try to impress others
• you worry about being "popular" and
pleasing everyone
Shift from External toShift from External to
InternalInternal
• you frequently want to do the opposite of
what others want you to do
• you often let others make decisions for
you
• you let others take care of you
• you worry about taking care of others'
needs or feelings more than you take care
of your own
• constantly "should" all over yourself OR do
what you "want" to do
Myths about SelfMyths about Self
• I must please every one
• My value as a person depends on
what others think of me
• If I fail in a task I am a failure
• To be a good person, I must help all
those who seek my help
• It is wrong to express anger
• I’d be considered weak if I express
soft feelings to / in front of others
