gently placing/rubbing it against the baby's upper jaw or
palate
so that the baby can suck, lick or chew on it.
It can be made into a syrup which can be placed on the
baby's palate.
3. Proven from Hadith
Aisha (RA) narrates that "the people used to
bring their newborn children to the Prophet and
he would bless them and perform the tahneek"
(Sahih Muslim)
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Moosa
Radiyallahu Anhu that he said, ‘A son was born
at our place, I brought him to the Messenger of
Allah who named him Ibrahim, and performed
his Tahneek with a date. He then made Dua of
Barakah (blessings for him) and handed him to
me’. (Bukhari)
4.
Hadhrat Aa'ishah (R.A.) relates, "Whenever children were brought in the
presence of the Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam he would pray for
the child and perform tahneek.
Hadhrat Asma bint Yazeed (R. A) after migrating to Madinah gave birth to
Abdullah Ibn Zubair at the site of Qubah. She reports, "I arrived before the
Holy Prophet Salkillahu Alaihi Wasallam with my offspring and placed him in
Rasullullah's Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam's blessed lap. The Holy Prophet
Saliallahi' Alaihi Wasallam sought a date and after chewing on it placed it in
my baby's mouth." Thus the first morsel to enter his mouth was the Holy
Prophet's Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam blessed saliva. He then applied the
chewed date to his palate and prayed for him and blessed him. The
supplication offered by the Holy Prophet Saltallahu Alaihi Wasallam is as
follows:
'Oh Allah, grant him rectitude and taqwah and promote him in Islam' (Sharah
Shariatul Islam)
5. Fiqh Ruling
Majority of the scholars say it is Mustahab.
Imaam Nawawee says, “Scholars are agreed
upon the recommendation of performing
tahneek upon the baby after its birth.” (Sharh
Saheeh Muslim 4/122)
6. Scientifically Proven
If the new born baby's sugar is low and the
nutrition from baby is cut off.
The baby turns to whatever sugar that is stored
in the body until the mother is ready to feed.
Most organs are active at this period.
If the baby had chew a date, the sugar would
be stored.
