A common mistake people make when starting to write an argument is rushing into the speech writing and not picking a strong and interesting idea. It’s kind of like a weak link in a chain. The rest of it may be really good, but a weak topic that doesn’t interest you will make the whole thing come apart.\n\nThis is important because writing an argument is hard work. It takes time. And if you have to spend a lot of time with an idea that you’re not very excited about, well, it’s going to make the job even harder.\n\nSo there’s a way to make sure you choose an idea that IS strong and that you will enjoy spending time developing for your audience. Let’s take a look at the steps.\n

In this step, we’re just going to focus on the LEFT side of the T-Chart, and you want to label it, MY OPINION.\n\nWhat is the world’s most important problem to solve?” Well, I think global warming is the most important problem to solve in the world today.\n“What am I worried about most in my life right now?” I’m thinking about how I worry about getting good grades in all my classes.\n\nAnd, “What makes me the most angry?” This one is easy. I think bullying is a big problem in schools today.\n\nOkay! So, now I’ve written my opinions as complete sentences starting with “I think”. Let’s move onto Step 3.\n

Okay, I want a strong idea for my argument–one I feel really strongly about and can spend time on it without growing tired of it. So, I’m going to ask myself some BIG questions about my strongest passions, and write down my notes in the next step.\n\nLet’s see. What is the world’s most important problem to solve?” or, “What am I worried about most in my life right now?” or, “What makes me the most angry?” Okay. I can see how answering these kinds of questions is going to get me excited about my argument. Let’s move on.\n

I can see how answering these kinds of questions is going to get me excited about my argument. Let’s move on.\n
Step 3: Now, I’m going to turn my opinion sentences into a CLAIM WHICH MEANS THE IDEA APPLIES TO EVERYBODY, NOT JUST ME. THE WHOLE POINT OF AN ARGUMENTATIVE SPEECH IS TO CONVINCE EVERYBODY WHO IS LISTENING THAT THE CLAIM HOLDS TRUE FOR ALL. If I can write a strong claim, I can connect with the biggest portion of my audience, and get their attention for my speech.\n\nSo, what makes a claim different than just an ordinary opinion I have? Well, a claim sounds more formal, especially when you take the “I” out of the statement. So, I’m going to think about global warming and put it this way:\n\nOne of the most urgent problems to solve is global warming. There. That one was pretty easy.\n\nAnd for the next one about getting good grades, let me think about how to make it a claim for everybody, not just MY opinion. Hmm...How about this:\n\nGood grades are a serious concern for students today.\n\nLastly, bullying. We want to stop bullying, so I’m going to write:\n\nPutting a stop to bullying is the most important issue in school today.\n\nThere. Three STRONG claims that everybody can relate to.\n

Alright! I now have three claims I’ve drafted based on opinions I came up with. Now I have to ask myself, WHICH CLAIM IS THE STRONGEST FOR BUILDING AN ARGUMENT?\n\nOkay. Well, let me slide my paper over again so I can focus JUST on the “CLAIMS” part of my T-Chart.\n
Now, I’m going to read all three claims again...and pick my favorite. Okay. These are all important issues for different reasons, and it’s a tough choice. \n\nBut, as I read my three claims several times...I think I really can build an argument about global warming in the next lessons. Here’s why:\n\nFROM WHAT I ALREADY KNOW ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING, THIS IS BECOMING A MORE URGENT ISSUE. SOME PEOPLE SAY OUR POLAR ICE IS MELTING AND WE HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT RISING WATER LINES WORLDWIDE. IN OTHER PLACES INCREASING DROUGHT CAUSES STARVATION. SOMEBODY EVEN SAID THAT HURRICAINE KATRINA IS A RESULT OF GLOBAL WARMING. So, that’s my pick! I AM EXCITED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING AS I conduct research and BUILD MY CASE FOR MY argument.\n
In this lesson you have learned to generate speech ideas by recording observations and opinions on a T-chart.\n
Now it’s your turn. Make a T-Chart on a piece of paper, and start asking yourself questions.\n

Now. Make a T-Chart on a piece of paper labeled, “My Opinion | Claims”. Take your answers and write them into opinions that start with, “I Think”\n

Now, turn your opinion sentences into a claim. A claim sounds more formal, especially when you take the “I” out of the statement. So, I’m going to think about global warming and put it this way: \nOne of the most urgent problems to solve is global warming. There. That one was pretty easy.\nAnd for the next one about getting good grades, let me think about how to make it a claim for everybody, not just MY opinion. Hmm...How about this...Good grades are a serious concern for students today.\n\nReview and choose your strongest claim.\n
