Organicmatteristrappedinthethinlayersastheyarecompactedandgraduallyconvertedthroughheatandpressureintohydrocarbons(petroleumandnaturalgas). Shalescanberegardedasbothcaprockbyvirtueoftheirimpermeablenatureandcompactnessthusactingasagoodsealandasthesourcerockduetorichnessoforganicmaterialcontent,itsmaturity,generationpotentialandgeographicspreadoverlargeareas.

Shale Gas Shalegasisunconventionalgasthatispartiallystoredinthematrixofshalerocksasadsorbedgasandalsoasfreegasinfracturesorpores;unlikeofconventionalgaswhichisexpelledfromthesource,transportedandstored. FreeGasinplace+Adsorbedgasinplace=OriginalgasinPlace ShalegasriskedrecoverablereserveestimatesofIndiaaregreaterthan250tcfanditisyettobeexploredandexploited. Shalegasproductionpressuresaregenerallylow(6‐1500cu.m./day)butlengthofproductionperiodcompensatesforthevolume. Shalegasfieldsaremostlyfoundindeeplayers(>2000m),extremetemperatureandpressuregovernthehydrodynamicprocess.

US Experience ShalegasintheUnitedStatesisrapidlyincreasingasanavailablesourceofnaturalgas.ItsexplorationandexploitationinUSAhasbeenaneyeopenerfortheWorld.Atpresent,USshalegasproductionisabout26billioncubicft.aday,whichis35%oftotalgasoutputof74.5billioncubicft.aday. Shalegashastakenoncoalasenergysourceforpowergeneration;coalwasproviding50%ofelectricpowerin2005,nowithasdroppedtoabout37%.Further,shalegasdriveinUShasresultedindeclineincarbondioxideemissionsto1.4%peryearsince2005. In1996,shalegaswellsintheUnitedStatesproduced0.3trillioncubicfeet(8.5billioncubicmetres),1.6%ofUSgasproduction;by2006,productionhadmorethantripledto1.1trillioncubicfeet(31billioncubicmetres)peryear,5.9%ofUSgasproduction.

US Experience Ledbynewapplicationsofhydraulicfracturingtechnologyandhorizontaldrilling, developmentofnewsourcesofshalegashasoffsetdeclinesinproductionfromconventionalgasreservoirs,andhasledtomajorincreasesinreservesofUSnaturalgas. USAhasperfectedthetechnologyforshalegasexplorationandexploitation. TheeconomicsuccessofshalegasintheUnitedStatessince2000hasledtorapiddevelopmentofshalegasinCanada,and,morerecently,hasspurredinterestinshalegaspossibilitiesinEurope,Asia,andAustralia.

Non-conventional Energy India has typically three major sources of non conventional energy: GasHydrate:Lowproductionrate,absenceofsimilarhydratesinanyotherpartofworld& environmentalhazardsmakeGasHydratedifficultforMethaneextraction.GoodamountofR&Dinitiativesareundertakentodeveloptechnology&commercializeit.However,itlooksdifficulttocommenceproductionaspertheGovernment’sdeadlineof2015. CBM:CoalbedMethane(CBM),aneco‐friendlynaturalgas,storedincoalseams,generatedduringtheprocessofthecoalification.Havingthe3rdlargestprovencoalreserves,IndiahassignificantprospectsforcommercialrecoveryofCBM.IndianCBMpolicy,whichwasimplementedin2001,isoneofthemostinvestorfriendlypoliciesintheworldwithfourroundsofsuccessfulbiddingtilldate. ShaleOil&Gas:OilShalesareusuallyfine‐grainedsedimentaryrockscontainingrelativelylargeamountsoforganicmatterfromwhichsignificantquantitiesofshaleoilandcombustiblegascanbeextractedbydestructivedistillation.
  9. 9. Shale Gas Potential Indiahas28sedimentarybasinswithlargeamountofshalerockinthesebasinswhichcouldbethegoodsourceforshalegas.Dateinthetableincludesonlyfourbasins(Cambay, Damodar,KGandCauverybasins). There are another 24 basins which need the study of shale gas resources.

CentralMinePlanningandDesignInstitute(CMPDI):45TCFofShaleGasin6subbasins(Jharia¸ Bokaro,NorthKaranpura,SouthKaranpura,RaniganjandSohagpur)locatedinWestBengal,JharkhandandMadhyaPradesh. UnitedStatesGeologicalSurvey(USGS)hasalsoestimatedtechnicallyrecoverableShaleGasresourcesof6.1TCFin3basins(CambayOnland,KrishnaGodavariOnland&CauveryOnland)locatedinGujarat, AndhraPradesh,andTamilNadu.

  14. 14. Krishna Godavari Basin TheKrishnaGodavariBasinisaprovenpetroliferousbasinlocatedontheeastcoastofIndia. Thebasincontainsabout5kmthicksediments. Technicallyrecoverableresourcesareestimatedtobeabout27Tcf.

Shale Gas Exploration Theshalegasexplorationhasfollowingsteps: 1.Selectionofbasinandseismicstudytoknowtheextentandthicknessofshaleinthegeologicalformation. 2.Explorationdrillingandanalysisofcoreforgeochemistry,petro-physicalproperties. 3.Understandingtheextentofshalegasplaywiththehelpofpilotwells,seismicinterpretationandlogcorrelation. 4.QuantificationofshalegasbystudyingtheadsorptionanddesorptionstudiesonthecorestomeasureLangmuirvolumeandgascontentwithchangeofporepressure. 5.Thepetro-physicalevaluationandreservoircharacterizationisimportanttoevaluatetheshalegasreserve. 6.Geochemicalanalysisandthestudyofstressregimehelpindesigningthewellcompletion,drillinghorizontalwellsandselectingproperperforationtechnique.

Shale Gas Policy On14October,2013,theGovernmentofIndianotifiedthepolicyguidelinesforexplorationandexploitationofshalegasandoilbyNationalOilCompanies(NOCs)intheironlandPetroleumExplorationLease(PEL)/PetroleumMiningLease(PML)blocksawardedunderthenominationregimesbeforetheadventofNELPpolicyin1999. Asperthepolicy,theNOCswillundertakeamandatoryminimumworkprogrammeinafixedtimeframeforshalegasandoilexplorationandexploitation,sothatthereisoptimumaccretionanddevelopmentofshalegasandoilresources. Underthefirstphaseofassessmentofshalegasandoil,explorationandexploitation,atpresent,56PEL/PMLblocks(ONGC50,andOIL6)havebeenidentifiedbyNOCs. TheseblocksarelocatedinthestatesofAssam(7blocks),ArunachalPradesh(1block), Gujarat(28blocks),Rajasthan(1block),AndhraPradesh(10blocks)andTamilNadu(9blocks).
  17. 17. Status of Shale Gas ONGChaddrilledthefirstwellinJambusarinthelastweekofOctoberin2013toexploitthenaturalgastrappedwithintheshaleformationslocatedinCambaybasin. AccordingtotheBasinManager,theestimatedshalegaspotentialis20TCF. ThedatafromthefirstwellnearJambusarhasgivenONGCmoreleadsforfurtherexplorationthatwillhelpthecompanyascertainparametersintakingupcommercialproductions.
