to practice IODD. But it had about 40 participants

18. Our basic framework
● Kyoto OpenData Community and ShokokuRoman OpenData
Community use the same framework
● The members are quite overlapping
● Introduction:
● City History Lecture: Options
● Basic guidance : Wikipedia and OSM: 30-50min
● City walk : 1-2 hours
● Lectures : Wikipedia and OSM groups respectively : 20min?
● Edit: Wikipedia and OSM groups respectively : 1-2 hours
● Presentation of results, Group photo
19. Target and focus
● Main target: Newcomer, Contributors after a long time
● Of course, contributors are also welcome
● Focus: Understand simple ways to contribute and use
OSM or Wikimedia
20. City walk
● We sometimes have town guide: option
● Survey for OSM Group
● We also go to the location of the subject for writing
articles on Wikipedia
● Take a photo:Wkimedia Commonsへ
● Some cases only upload to Commons without editing
Wikipedia

27. Wifi and Projector
● Internet access is important
● We often rent portable Wifi
● Borrowing a projector may increase the cost of the
venue
● We bought a used projector
28. Event series themes and stories
● Engage participants' interests
● ShokokuRoman OpenData Community
● Series about places related to the end of the Edo
period
● Previously it was going along “Saigoku” old highway
● Mapping party series: Mapping 13 world heritage in
Kyoto in order
30. My purpose
● Increase opportunities to learn open data
● It is important to increase the number of people who
understand open data even if they are not
contributors
● Interact people related to open data
● Increase the number of contributors
31. Cross community
● I am aiming for cross community by bringing two events
together
● I think it is a good idea for various open data
communities to interact and sometimes change their
contributions.
● It's common in the open source community
32. Challenges point (1) : Time schedule
● OSM and Wikipedia editing require different time
schedules
● Mapping is important for OSM, but indoor editing time
is important for Wikipeida
● We are paying attention to securing editing time for
Wikipedia
● Kyoto OpenData Community, the town walking team
was divided between OSM and Wikipedia
33. Challenges point (2) : Culture
● Communication of community members from different
cultures
● I think it is important to create a culture that respects
each other
● Deal with aggressive participants
● Organized members have different cultures
34. Challenges point (3) : Follow up for biginar
● It is an event for beginners
● Follow up with another event
● In Kyoto, OSM mapping evensts:
● in Osaka, OSM hackathon is held on the third
Wednesday of every month
● I have been holding LibreOffice events every month
for 5 years and my friend (Sakanoshita-san) is
holding OSM events at the same place together for 3
years.
36. Challenges point (4) : Growing the community
● The rate of increase of contributors is slow
● I think a strategic approach is needed
● The speed of growth is increasing slowly now
38. Librarian and library potential
● Librarys collect books about the local infomation and
seeks ways to use them
● Some people think that libraries should play a role in
supporting the community
● Many librarians have the skills to write Wikipedia
● Wikipedia Town and Open Datason have already been
held / support in some libraries
● This activity has the potential to expand further
39. Librarian and library potential(2)
● Wikipedia Town Summit was effective in expanding to
the library
● 2014 Tokyo
● 2017 Kyoto
● Librarians and community members gathered from all
over Japan to exchange knowledge. There was also
some transportation support
40. Wikipedia Town Summit 2017 Kyoto

41. Civic Tech Community Potential
● There are many Code for x communities in Japan
● They have the potential motivation to register as open
data with local data
● Already several civic tech communities organized
mapping parties and Wikipedia towns
● We want to support that activity
42. People who want to record local information
● Information about shopping streets, tourist information,
more
● These people are often not interested in Civic Tech and
Open Data
● OSM, Wikipedia and other open data often fit their use
cases
● They could be contributors to the extent they need
43. Thanks to Sakanoshita-san for helping me
create this slide
● He is a founder of the ShokokuRoman OpenData
Community and a member of the Kyoto OpenData
Community
44. Conclusion
● In Japan, various groups are organized by Mapping Party
and WikipediaTown
● My purpose is to increase opportunities to learn open
data, interact people related to open data, and increase
the number of contributors
● Cross community is important
● We will support an ecosystem where people who want to
record and use information can contribute
