Imogen Casebourne and Lars Hyland presented a seminar at Learning Technologies on 29th January 2014 at Olympia 2 in London. This presentation revisits some of the major trends in e-learning spotted by Epic over the years, including mobile learning and simulations. It also takes inspiration from what we think will be major future trends, including wearable technology such as Google Glass and smart watches.

Editor's Notes
(From Jessie)Back to the Future images – do want to including given potential issues about permissions and rights to show images from films? My thinking is that it’s probably okay but we would definitely need to credit the source on top of the image.Epic timeline – do you mean the pier image from the brand guidelines or the magazine advert from last year with the bubbles and youngish girl holding ipad?\\LOKI\potprojs\Marketing\GRAPHIC_WORK_EVENTS\LT magazine ads
People are unlikely to allow you to do what you tell them if they don’t think you have sufficient authority. This is where war stories from practitioners in the field can be invaluable. For example, a large mining corporation was having problems with the effectiveness of its health and safety training until it employed ex-miners to recount stories about mining accidents and near-misses that they had personally experienced. The rate of accidents for people attending this course went significantly down.In 2012 Epic worked with the BBC to record accounts from leading programme makers about how they approached making programmes about controversial events, such as the Iraq war. As well as ensuring your course has the needed authority, narrative is a far more memorable and powerful technique for learning than presenting facts, as it’s stored in a different part of the brain. A part of the brain from which people find it easier to retrieve information.
So moving forward to 2010, Epic started to develop our current smartphone and tablet capability which eventually led to the creation of our GoMo authoring tool. The very first project we worked on was our award winning maths revision apps, created in conjunction with Harper Collins, the publisher. These were aimed at UK schoolchildren preparing for the important ‘GCSE’ exams they take at age 16.This was just-in-time learning. We didn’t expect the kids to learn maths concepts from scratch using mobile devices on the run, but the bite size reminders, supporting media and practice opportunities meant that they could consolidate their existing knowledge, and identify any gaps. The design was optimised for smaller mobile devices, used on the go. This meant short bites, and a flatter navigational structure. The same year, we undertook some ground-breaking research for the NHS (the UK health provider and largest UK employer) about how health workers, who are often on the go, might benefit from learning using mobile devices. What we found was in line with our experiences designing for PDAs. Many learners (especially those who couldn’t easily get to PCs) wanted to access e-learning courses from their mobile devices, especially statutory and mandatory training and assessment (for example, health and safety and fire awareness, where people have to re-accredit every year). They wanted an experience on every device that was just as good as the one they might have on their PC. Others wanted supporting resources, and saw mobile learning as part of a blend, which might also include face-to-face elements.
NO NEW GRAPHIC NEEDEDResponsive web design is achieved by dividing the content area into blocks, and specifying where each block should appear on the larger device, and on the smaller device. So typically, the larger device will show the blocks in a horizontal layout, whereas the smaller device will employ a vertical layout with scrolling. You can see this in the examples from our own Epic website here.
