• Nearly two years after making one of the biggest changes to secure
search that resulted in a steady rise in "(not provided)" data, Google
has switched all searches over to encrypted searches using HTTPS.
This means no more keyword data will be passed to site owners.

know there’s a lot of search traffic for the phrase ―girls red tutu‖
(instead of, say the phrase ―red tutus for girls‖) I’m going to make
sure my product descriptions on the website use that phrase, my
blog content uses that phrase and my social media content utilizes
that phrase.
• That’s like using honey to draw the bees. You do the homework to
find out what it is they are searching for, then make sure your
marketing messages and content speak in the language customers
and prospects use when they are searching.

• Another example: say your company makes a software product that’s
a project management tool for B2B companies. And you know that
certain keyword terms drive a lot of traffic to your website, and that
traffic tends to convert at a fairly high rate. Obviously, you’ve likely
been using those keyword terms in your landing page campaigns,
your blog content and elsewhere in order to keep driving that traffic
and those leads.
• This change by Google will impact your ability to easily access this
keyword information and your SEO tactics will need to adapt.

• When questioned in 2011, Matt Cutts of Google was quick to respond
that it was estimated that the amount of "(not provided)" visits "even
at full roll-out ... would still be in the single-digit percentages of all
Google searchers on Google.com."

• Danny Sullivan, from his article on Search Engine Land says:
• Done To Block The NSA?
• The first is the whole US National Security Agency spying thing. In June,
Google was accused of cooperating to give the NSA instant and direct
access to its search data through the PRISM spying program, something
the company has strongly denied. That hasn’t saved it from criticism.
• Since then, Google’s waged a campaign to allow it to be more
transparent about the number of spying requests it says it does receive —
on a limited basis and not involving direct access — but which it’s
forbidden by US law from disclosing. It also began increasing encryption
between its own data centers.

• Done To Boost Ad Sales?
• The other reason is that Google recently made a change so that one of
the easiest ways for publishers to see the actual terms that have been
withheld over time is through the Google AdWords system.
• See, apparently search terms aren’t so private that Google withholds
them entirely. Rather, it withholds them from being transmitted in the clear
across the internet. Publishers can still see these terms by going into the
Google Webmaster Tools area, though they only see the top 2,000 per
day and only going back for 90 days (something Google said earlier this
month will increase to one year, in the future).

• One final note, Google isn’t the only search engine on the planet. It’s just
a pretty big one. You’ll still be able to access your search data from Bing
and Yahoo and extrapolate that data to help craft your SEO strategy.
