Homework questions: Pages 167 – 170.
1. Why did Prime Minister Grenville ask Parliament to tax the colonies?
To pay for war debt. French and Indian War and for standing army in the ORV.
2. What was the Sugar Act and how was it different than other duties or taxes?
A tax on molasses and sugar imported by the colonies. Passed to raise maoney
rather than to control trade.3. How did parliament make life more difficult for the colonists?
Colonists couldn’t print their own money. British courts had more power and no
juries.
4. What did James Otis and Samuel Adams say about taxation?
“No taxation without representation”. Colonists can’t be taxed without consent.
5. How does Grenville respond to complaints about the Sugar Act and why does he
think it is fair?
Grenville repeals the Sugar Act and replaces it with the Stamp Act – a tax on
paper (legal documents, newspapers, etc.). Thought fair because British citizens
paid similar taxes in England. This was a direct tax.
6. What were the series of resolutions that Patrick Henry presented to the House of
Burgesses in Virginia?
The Stamp Act violated the rights of colonists as British citizens as did no trial by
jury.
7. What was the Stamp Act congress? What did it ask Parliament to do? Was it
successful?
The Congress was when delegates from 9 colonies met in NY and asked
Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act because it violated rights and liberties.
Colonists boycott until it is repealed.
8. Describe Parliament’s response to the repealing of the Stamp Act.
Parliament and the King issue the Declaratory Act – Parliament made the rules,
not the colonists!
