BONE FRACTURES By: Evelyn Mendez Bio 120 February 2010
Green stick fracture The name is by analogy with green wood which similarity breaks another outside when bent. It is a fracture in a young soft bone in which the bone bends partially breaks. Occurs almost exclusively during infancy or childhood when bones are soft.
There are three basic forms of green stick: The first transverse fracture occurs in the cortex Second form is a buckling fracture caused by impaction. The third is a bow fraction in which the bone becomes curved a long its longitudinal axis.
Treatment for green stick fracture: Closed reduction and cast application which work in concert to straighten the characteristics of the bone angulation at the fracture site.
Healing time for green stick: Children’s bones tend to heal faster than adult’s so the cast may be removed or replaced with smaller cast in 3-4 weeks.
Transverse fracture A fracture in which the brake is across the bone at the right angle to the long axis of the bone (the bone is separated in two pieces) Occurs from a direct blow(imagine a karate chop directly across the arm) It can also occur when people do things repetitively (like running)
Treatment for transverse fracture: Could involve either an open or closed reduction before the area is given a cast (when is possible). Doctors must surgically put the bone back together. May employ so that the bone stay in one place and heal completely: Metal pins Plates screws
Healing time for transverse fracture: Time may vary Is not uncommon to require several months of recuperation before the bone is completely knit itself back together.
Compound fracture A fracture in which the bone is sticking trough the skin. Also called open fracture Usually caused due to the high impact injuries such as: Sports Heavy falls Car crashes
Treatment for compound fractures: Usually an operation is required to quickly cleanse the area & regulating the bone Administration of antibiotics to prevent infection due to the exposure of the bone to bacteria If infection does appear, is difficult to heal
Healing tieme: Usually it takes longer to heal due to severity About 6 weeks for adult and earlier in children It varies according to severity of fracture: Severity Age Health
The end
