Tunable white – light for activity and well-being
Tunable white – light for activity and well-being
Tunable white in applikationsNatural light for humans
ProductsTechnology
Evolution
The Earth rotates around its
axis in one day, and as it
rotates is the place we find
ourselves in facing the sun by
day and away from the sun
during the night.
Because we humans, like all
living things, are dependent on
the sun and the light, the
sunrise and sunset have since
the beginning of life steered us
and our biological clock, our
circadian rhythm, controls our
actions
Evolution
We humans evolved in Africa and when the sun rose, we could begin to look around and
see that we survived the night with a sense of relief.
The morning light, coming from low angles, telling us to wake up and prepare us for the day.
Evolution
Later in the morning there was a different light. The daylight and the light in the sky come
from high angles and hits the bottom of the eye where what we call the "third receptor" is
located and affects hormone production. The light that hits the bottom of the eye in
combination with colour temperature of the sky and the shadows tells our brain that it's time
for activity, we need to collect food to survive until the next day.
Evolution
Later in the day, when the sun starts to go down, the sky turns red and the light comes from
a low angle, cortisol levels decrease the production of the sleep hormone starts and
prepares us for a night's rest.
Evolution
When we learnt to control the
fire it supplied us, apart from
protection against wild animals
also light and heat. We could
start to use the dark hours for
more than sleeping. The light
from the fire creates security
and we react by feeling calm
and safe.
We found out that we could
carry around the fire with
torches. Later we got various
types of lamps but with all the
fire and the open flame as a
base principle
Evolution
With electric lighting we became independent of daylight
and fire and could start working un for us unnatural times.
One can say that the earth stopped. Our biological clock
could be disturbed in its rhythm.
Evolution
Now the technology has reached the point when we can stimulate our inner clock with
artificial light again, for activity and well-being during the day and the world can start turning
again.
The natural light – our norm
Since the origin of life the changes of the
natural light throughout the day has
guided our actions and our biological
clock.
The cold daylight tells us that it is time
for activity – hunting or food collecting.
The warm afternoon light calms and
prepares us for the night's rest.
Tunable white – for the
organization and the human
The employees are the organization's
greatest asset. If the employees are well
the better chance that the organization is
healthy.
Dynamic lighting makes people feel
better by imitating nature and stimulate
the circadian rhythm.
The ability to control the light
temperature creates satisfaction and
willingness to also control the intensity
which can save energy.
Tunable white – to be able to
choose the right light
We are used be able to regulate the
intensity of the light. Now we can also
easily adjust the colour temperature!
Different tasks and work situations
require different light.
We do not need fix a colour temperature
but can choose, depending on the
situation or task.

5000k 2700k6500k
Conference rooms are often located in the
middle of the building without access to
daylight.
It is an area where the colour temperature
control can be used in several ways.
A cooler light when more active tasks are
being performed, or a warmer light when
we need to focus.
A common issue when using video
conferences is that camera is unable to
handle the light levels as well as the human
eye, so we are perceived as looking more
sickly.
With a Tuneable White solution, we can adapt
the light level so that the faces of the
participants are rendered as realistically as
possible, helping to facilitate the
communication process.

Education or full-day conference?
As well as having scenes with different
lighting levels, it is advisable to also
control the colour temperature.
By using a timing control the colour of the
light provides the participants with an idea
of the time of day.
Alternatively, we can use the colour
temperature to create different scenes.
Refreshing high levels of cold light for activity
or warmer dimmed light for focus and
concentration.
The light on the presenting area is controlled
separately depending on what activities are
going on there.
In the breakout areas
2700k 4000k3000k
5000k 2700k6500k
In breakout rooms the benefits of colour
temperature control are in their element,
transforming how you can use the space.
A pause in the cold light revitalises us while a
warmer light calms us down. In this
example we have chosen recessed Pozzo.
The large, wide beam distribution creates a
light-well effect, giving an impression of
natural light, further optimised with a
varying colour temperature which imitates
the evolution of daylight throughout the
day.
Because the ones who pauses also want
control a simple panel on the wall can be
used to define a specific light setting.
Welcoming in the entrance or waiting room
2700k 4000k3000k
5000k 2700k6500k
In the entrance or the waiting room light is
controlled with a router solution to imitate
daylight, both in intensity and colour.
This can be especially important if there is no
natural daylight reaching in the room.
This solution provides a sense of having
access to daylight, even if the room is
located in the middle of the building where
there is limited access to the real thing.
Pozzo creates a feeling of natural light wells,
reinforced by adding light on the walls with
Pleiad Wallwasher G3.
Personal light in the cellular office
2700k 4000k3000k
5000k 2700k6500k
A cellular office is the easiest room to apply a
Tuneable White solution as there is only
one user who controls the light according
to his or her preferences.
Think of a cold, intense light when you want to
activate yourself or a warm dimmed light
for conversations, reading and tasks which
require concentration.
Using a suspended direct/indirect Combilume,
supplemented with Pleiad Wallwasher G3,
provides the ambient and task light
requirements, with the colour temperature
and intensity controlled via a simple panel
on the wall.
Personal light in the cellular office
2700k 4000k3000k
5000k 2700k6500k
Open plan offices cannot be controlled to
reflect each individual's personal
preferences since the room is lit for a
group of people.
Here we recommend a router solution that
varies the light over time and adjusts the
colour temperature mimicking the light
outdoors.
In the ceiling we have Multilume Flat and, to
strengthen the sense of a natural daylight,
the walls are lit using Pleiad Wallwasher
G3.
Tunable white – the technique
is simple
The LED modules contains a mixture of
diodes providing warm or cold light.
By mixing the light from these diodes we
can get colour temperatures between
2700–6500 Kelvin out of a single
luminaire.
Everything is controlled via DALI Device
Type 8 and can be managed with
different types of control units
Light over the day
When applying an automatic dynamic
control of colour temperature and
intensity we have to use a router.
Colour temperature and intensity are
controlled by the clock, this is also called
”Daylight Mimicking”.

Personal control after task
Personal control to regulate the light
depending of task, mood or situation.
“Light showers" in high levels of cold
light for short periods or other settings
after mood or task.
Technology up til now – DALI
•One ballast for the warm diodes and one
for the cold ones.
•Two DALI-addresses.
•Programming of each ballast for colour
mixing to get ie 4000 K.
•Measure colour mix with spectrometer to
get the right colour temperature.
•Lot of controlling and measuring to set
various scenes.
Technology today – DALI Device Type 8
•One ballast controls both warm and cold
diodes.
•One DALI-address, the logic is built into
the ballast.
•The desired colour temperatures are set
directly in programming.

Because we humans, like all living things, are dependent on the sun and the light, the sunrise and sunset have since the beginning of life steered us and our biological clock, our circadian rhythm, controls our actions
  • 4. Evolution We humans evolved in Africa and when the sun rose, we could begin to look around and see that we survived the night with a sense of relief. The morning light, coming from low angles, telling us to wake up and prepare us for the day.
  • 5. Evolution Later in the morning there was a different light. The daylight and the light in the sky come from high angles and hits the bottom of the eye where what we call the "third receptor" is located and affects hormone production. The light that hits the bottom of the eye in combination with colour temperature of the sky and the shadows tells our brain that it's time for activity, we need to collect food to survive until the next day.
  • 6. Evolution Later in the day, when the sun starts to go down, the sky turns red and the light comes from a low angle, cortisol levels decrease the production of the sleep hormone starts and prepares us for a night's rest.
  • 7. Evolution When we learnt to control the fire it supplied us, apart from protection against wild animals also light and heat. We could start to use the dark hours for more than sleeping. The light from the fire creates security and we react by feeling calm and safe. We found out that we could carry around the fire with torches. Later we got various types of lamps but with all the fire and the open flame as a base principle
  • 8. Evolution With electric lighting we became independent of daylight and fire and could start working un for us unnatural times. One can say that the earth stopped. Our biological clock could be disturbed in its rhythm.
  • 9. Evolution Now the technology has reached the point when we can stimulate our inner clock with artificial light again, for activity and well-being during the day and the world can start turning again.
  • 10. The natural light – our norm Since the origin of life the changes of the natural light throughout the day has guided our actions and our biological clock. The cold daylight tells us that it is time for activity – hunting or food collecting. The warm afternoon light calms and prepares us for the night's rest.
  • 11. Tunable white – for the organization and the human The employees are the organization's greatest asset. If the employees are well the better chance that the organization is healthy. Dynamic lighting makes people feel better by imitating nature and stimulate the circadian rhythm. The ability to control the light temperature creates satisfaction and willingness to also control the intensity which can save energy.
  • 12. Tunable white – to be able to choose the right light We are used be able to regulate the intensity of the light. Now we can also easily adjust the colour temperature! Different tasks and work situations require different light. We do not need fix a colour temperature but can choose, depending on the situation or task.
  • 13. Tunable white in various a applications Cellular office Pause room Open plan office Conference room Waiting room Auditorium
  • 14. Tunable white in the conference room 2700k 4000k3000k 5000k 2700k6500k Conference rooms are often located in the middle of the building without access to daylight. It is an area where the colour temperature control can be used in several ways. A cooler light when more active tasks are being performed, or a warmer light when we need to focus. A common issue when using video conferences is that camera is unable to handle the light levels as well as the human eye, so we are perceived as looking more sickly. With a Tuneable White solution, we can adapt the light level so that the faces of the participants are rendered as realistically as possible, helping to facilitate the communication process.
  • 15. All light on me- the auditorium 2700k 4000k3000k 5000k 2700k6500k Education or full-day conference? As well as having scenes with different lighting levels, it is advisable to also control the colour temperature. By using a timing control the colour of the light provides the participants with an idea of the time of day. Alternatively, we can use the colour temperature to create different scenes. Refreshing high levels of cold light for activity or warmer dimmed light for focus and concentration. The light on the presenting area is controlled separately depending on what activities are going on there.
  • 16. In the breakout areas 2700k 4000k3000k 5000k 2700k6500k In breakout rooms the benefits of colour temperature control are in their element, transforming how you can use the space. A pause in the cold light revitalises us while a warmer light calms us down. In this example we have chosen recessed Pozzo. The large, wide beam distribution creates a light-well effect, giving an impression of natural light, further optimised with a varying colour temperature which imitates the evolution of daylight throughout the day. Because the ones who pauses also want control a simple panel on the wall can be used to define a specific light setting.
  • 17. Welcoming in the entrance or waiting room 2700k 4000k3000k 5000k 2700k6500k In the entrance or the waiting room light is controlled with a router solution to imitate daylight, both in intensity and colour. This can be especially important if there is no natural daylight reaching in the room. This solution provides a sense of having access to daylight, even if the room is located in the middle of the building where there is limited access to the real thing. Pozzo creates a feeling of natural light wells, reinforced by adding light on the walls with Pleiad Wallwasher G3.
  • 18. Personal light in the cellular office 2700k 4000k3000k 5000k 2700k6500k A cellular office is the easiest room to apply a Tuneable White solution as there is only one user who controls the light according to his or her preferences. Think of a cold, intense light when you want to activate yourself or a warm dimmed light for conversations, reading and tasks which require concentration. Using a suspended direct/indirect Combilume, supplemented with Pleiad Wallwasher G3, provides the ambient and task light requirements, with the colour temperature and intensity controlled via a simple panel on the wall.
  • 19. Personal light in the cellular office 2700k 4000k3000k 5000k 2700k6500k Open plan offices cannot be controlled to reflect each individual's personal preferences since the room is lit for a group of people. Here we recommend a router solution that varies the light over time and adjusts the colour temperature mimicking the light outdoors. In the ceiling we have Multilume Flat and, to strengthen the sense of a natural daylight, the walls are lit using Pleiad Wallwasher G3.
  • 20. Tunable white – the technique is simple The LED modules contains a mixture of diodes providing warm or cold light. By mixing the light from these diodes we can get colour temperatures between 2700–6500 Kelvin out of a single luminaire. Everything is controlled via DALI Device Type 8 and can be managed with different types of control units
  • 21. Light over the day When applying an automatic dynamic control of colour temperature and intensity we have to use a router. Colour temperature and intensity are controlled by the clock, this is also called ”Daylight Mimicking”. Intensity Colour temperature
  • 22. Intensity Colour temperature Personal control after task Personal control to regulate the light depending of task, mood or situation. “Light showers" in high levels of cold light for short periods or other settings after mood or task.
  • 23. Technology up til now – DALI •One ballast for the warm diodes and one for the cold ones. •Two DALI-addresses. •Programming of each ballast for colour mixing to get ie 4000 K. •Measure colour mix with spectrometer to get the right colour temperature. •Lot of controlling and measuring to set various scenes.
  • 24. Technology today – DALI Device Type 8 •One ballast controls both warm and cold diodes. •One DALI-address, the logic is built into the ballast. •The desired colour temperatures are set directly in programming.
