  3. 3. What is DHCP ? DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a protocol used to provide quick, automatic, and central management for the distribution of IP addresses within a network. DHCP is also used to configure the proper subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server information on the device.
  4. 4. How it’s works ?
  5. 5. Advantage of DHCP • There is no need to manually configure each client with an IP address. • You don't need to keep a record of the IP addresses that you have assigned. • You can automatically assign a new IP address if you move a client to a different subnet. • You can release the IP address of a computer that is offline and reassign the address to another computer. • Address duplication is eliminated as DHCP automatically tracks IP address assignments. • The DHCP server can detect unauthorised DHCP servers on the network.

Disadvantage of DHCP • DHCP server can be single point of failure in networks having only one configured DHCP server. • DHCP packets can not travel across router, Hence relay agent is necessary to have DHCP server handle all leases on both network segments. Relay agents receive broadcast DHCP packets and forward them as unicast packets to DHCP server. Here relay agent must be configured with IP address of the DHCP server. • Security: As DHCP server has no secure mechanism for authentication of the client, it can gain unauthorized access to IP addresses by presenting credentials such as client identifiers which belong to other DHCP clients. • The machine name does not change when new IP address is assigned. • Client is not able to access the network in the absence of the DHCP server.
