17. Practice
• Create a “how to record a PowerPoint
presentation” with this presentation. Go to
the beginning of the presentation and record
yourself explaining how to record a
PowerPoint presentation.
Open a PowerPoint presentation and click on the Add-Ins button. When the list of icons appear, select the microphone as the only highlighted icon. If any others are highlighted, turn them off. Next click on the recording options icons; the one next to the questions mark (?) Next slide
The recording options give you a number of different choices and most often these do not need to be changed from the default selections. The choices in the program menu that are already checked allow for the recording to be paused when you first begin. This is important so you have a chance to adjust your microphone recording volume once again before you actually begin recording. If you will be using your mouse to point out things you want your audience to notice then make sure the record mouse cursor is checked. And, if you want the cursor to be even more obvious than how it normally looked, check the “highlight cursor” box. Unless you are completely satisfied with your recording, you will want to edit in Camtasia when you are finished. Editing provides you with many options you can add including your table of contents after you have finished your recording. If you are recording your PowerPoint only and will be finished after your last slide, select the stop recording at end of presentation. Other choices include continue recording or pause and continue or prompt to continue recording. The video and audio menu provide options that allow for audio only or audio with video capture. Most important is the audio source drop down menu. You will want to select the audio source that you are using to record. The best recording comes from using an external microphone that is plugged into your USB computer port. It will show up in the menu and must be selected for it to work. Once you have selected it, you can adjust the volume with the slider. The volume level should move from left to right (green to red) as you speak. Adjust the volume up or down so when you speak the colored band moves close the far right, but doesn’t remain there. If it is staying the red zone, your recording will likely be distorted and you may have to re-record it. You will have another chance to adjust this after you click “record”.
When you are finished adjusting your audio settings, close the window and click again on the Add-Ins button. Then click on the record button. The recording is paused if you checked this box in the recording options. Here you can adjust your recording volume level again prior to actually recording. When you are ready. Click the begin recording button. You can narrate your PowerPoint using the microphone headset and advance the slides as you normally would. If you are not satisfied with a specific slide, use the Ctrl+Shift+F9 hot key to pause the recording. Then when you are ready to resume, repeat the Ctrl+Shift+F9 and re-record the slide you were unhappy with. When the recording is opened in the editor, you can delete the unwanted slide. At the end of the PowerPoint, simply press Esc and the recording will end.
Clip Bin - The Clip Bin references all video, audio, and image clips imported into the current project. You can add multiple instances of a clip onto the timeline.Library - The Library holds timeline sequences, video, audio, and image clips that you want to use from project to project. Items in the Library are called media assets. The Library comes pre-populated with media assets you use to add professional looking intros, outros, title clips, and more. Learn how media assets can add polish to a video.Callouts - Callouts are graphics that appear on top of a video to draw viewers’ attention to important objects or processes in a video.Zoom-n-Pan - The zoom and pan option work by inserting keyframes that determine when to zoom in and when to zoom out.Editing Audio - Change settings and add effect using the audio editing panel.Transitions - Transitions add a visual effect between the end of a clip and the beginning of the next clip. Use transitions to indicate the passage of time, change in location, to call attention, or to create a smooth flow between clips. Cursor Effects - In Camtasia Recorder, cursor data is collected and stored in the CAMREC recording file. In Camtasia Editor, the cursor can be enhanced for better visibility using a highlight, spotlight, sound effect and more.Title Clips - Use a title clip to add a static clip with a graphic and/or textVoice Narration - Use voice narration to insert a voice recording into the video. Record Camera - The Record Camera option records camera video from a Web camera and synchronizes it with the video on the timeline. Use the recorded camera video clip as a Picture-in-Picture (PIP) or side-by-side video within the main videoPicture-in-Picture - A Picture-in-Picture (PIP) is an additional video clip (usually a Web camera recording) that plays embedded into the main video or next to the main video. You can add video or image files onto the PIP track on the timeline. When you produce your video, you have several options for the placement of the PIP video: embedded on top of the main video or placed on the side of the video with or without a table of contents. Captions - Captions display onscreen text within a video to provide additional or interpretive information to viewers. Captions are used to create videos accessible to a larger audienceQuizzing - Insert a Flash quiz or survey into your video
Apart from a timeline a person can also edit parts of their video in storyboard mode.
