3. 3. Overfishing

“Many marine ecologists think that the biggest single threat to marine ecosystems today is overfishing. Our appetite for fish is exceeding the oceans' ecological limits with devastating impacts on marine ecosystems. Scientists are warning that overfishing results in profound changes in our oceans, perhaps changing them forever. Not to mention our dinner plates, which in future may only feature fish and chips as a rare and expensive delicacy.”

 4. 4. Health Check

Predators indicator of ecosystem health

Since 1950's 90% of large fish have disappeared

Including tuna, swordfish, marlin, cod, halibut, skate, and flounder

Biodiversity changes ex. Jellyfish

 5. 5. Collapse of Fisheries

1992 collapse of Cod Fisheries = 40000 jobs

3 substantial harvesting areas have collapsed or will

Fisheries solution has been the Pacific

 6. 6. Pacific Threatened

Global depletion of other waters

Fishing Fleets have migrated to the Pacific

Original problem not addressed

40% of GDP for Pacific Island States

Collapse of 75% of locations

 7. 7. Facts

One third of fish caught are thrown back dead

One third of fish caught become animal feed

The largest trawler =12 jumbo jets

50% of the fish are caught by 1% of the boats

 8. 8. Purse Seiner

Responsible for 70% of fishing

Largest can hold 12 jumbo jets

Indiscriminate in catch

 9. 9. Purse Seiner
 10. 10. Fish Farming

“From the highlands of Scotland to the Pacific waters of Chile, salmon faming is big business. In Chile alone, the export revenue generated from salmon farming now exceeds US$1 billion each year, a figure that is expected to double in the next few years. Supporters of industrial fish farming have long asserted that this so-called 'blue revolution' is both cheap and a sustainable alternative to the consumption of highly depleted wild-caught fish species”

 11. 11. Fish Farming

30% of all fish protien consumed in the world

Destroys enviornments

Leads to new diseases

Risk of breeding with native populations

 12. 12. Pollution

“By the year 2050 it is estimated that the world's population could have increased to around 12 billion. Of these, some 60 percent will live within 60km of the sea. The agricultural and industrial activities required to support this population will increase the already significant pressures on fertile coastal areas.”

 13. 13. Sorces of Pollution

Oil spills minor component

Others include domestic sewage, industrial discharges, leakages from waste tips, urban and industrial run-off, accidents, spillage, explosions, sea dumping operations, oil production, mining, agriculture nutrients and pesticides, waste heat sources, and radioactive discharges

 14. 14. Creeping Dead Zones

Cycle:

Nutrient Pollution

Algae Bloom

Death and Decay

Oxygen depletion

 15. 15. Discussion

What is overfishing?

Do you feel that this is a problem?

What solutions can you think of?

What steps can you personally take to change the current situation?

Do feel that Taiwan is contributing to the current situation?

 16. 16. Discussion

As populations grow so do their aggergated demand for food. Is there a more sustainable solution than fishing?

What is the future of Fish Farming?

Do you feel this can become a safer practice?

Is fish farming a big industry in Taiwan?

 17. 17. Discussion

Are you worried about ocean pollution getting into your diet?

Do you think ocean pollution is a problem?

What are some sollutions to ocean pollution?

What do you think Tawian's contribution to ocean pollution is?
