Hoover Dam <ul><li>Hoover dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete anti-gravity dam built in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between Nevada and Arizona. </li></ul><ul><li>The construction took place during 1931-1936, and involved thousands of workers and cost over a hundred lives. </li></ul><ul><li>It was dedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt on September 30, 1935. </li></ul>

Hoover Dam <ul><li>As the United States developed the Southwest, the Colorado River was seen as a potential source of irrigation water. </li></ul><ul><li>They looked at many potential site in the Lower Colorado area starting in the early 1900s, but realized the site’s were not the best. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1922 The Reclamation Service researched the Black Canyon area and wrote a report stating how this area would be ideal for a dam to produce hydroelectric power. </li></ul><ul><li>There were many who opposed the dam, and fought for years to not let it be built. </li></ul>

Hoover Dam <ul><li>Even before Congress approved the Boulder Canyon Project, the Bureau of Reclamation was considering what kind of dam should be used. </li></ul><ul><li>They decided on an anti-gravity dam, that would be 660 feet thick at the bottom, and tapering to 45 feet thick at the top. </li></ul><ul><li>It would present a convex face towards the water above the dam, allowing the curving arch of the dam to transmit the waters force into the rock walls of the canyon. </li></ul><ul><li>On January 10, 1931, the Bureau made the bid documents available to interested parties, at five dollars a copy. </li></ul><ul><li>The government would provide the materials, but the contractor was to prepare the site and build the dam. </li></ul>

Hoover Dam <ul><li>The Joint Venture called Six Companies, Inc., were the ones to build the damn. </li></ul><ul><li>The companies consisted of The Wattis Brothers, Morrison-Knudsen, Pacific Bridge Company, Henry J. Kaiser & W. A. Betchel Company, MacDonald & Kahn Ltd, and the J.F. Shea Company. </li></ul><ul><li>Their bid of 48,890,955 dollars was the lowest of three bids. </li></ul><ul><li>They built a new city at the dam site called Boulder City, Nevada, and this would be the main headquarters for the project. </li></ul><ul><li>In September of 1930, they built a railroad line connecting Boulder City to Las Vegas. </li></ul>
