As a global leader in flooring systems we have a
responsibility to all our stakeholders, to create a
better environment. The way we serve and drive the
market sets the pace and standard for world class
flooring solutions. Sustainable development and
‘creating better environments’ are integral parts of all
of Forbo Flooring Systems’ activities.
We’re fully committed to reducing our impact upon
the environment, not only in the way we run our
manufacturing sites but also in terms of our actions and
operations beyond the factory boundaries.
We’ve adopted a cradle-to-grave approach in order to
identify every possible opportunity to improve our use of
scarce resources, eliminate waste, maximise efficiency and
recycle and reuse materials.
Creating better environments
Our target
To continuously minimise the environmental impact of
Forbo Flooring Systems as measured by the weighted
categories in our independently verified Life Cycle
Assessment measurement system by 25% before the
end of 2015 (cf 2009).
Measurement
Forbo uses Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as the
independent methodology of measuring our impact on
the environment. Based on LCA assessment we already
out perform the industry average in resilient flooring
categories.
We shall succeed by applying Forbo’s 4 R’s:
Recycle
Reduce
Renewable
Reuse
Here are some examples of how we’ve used the 4 R’s principle to implement responsible actions in our
Entrance Flooring Systems portfolio.
Installation of our entrance system products can stop up to 90% of dirt entering a building thereby reducing
the amount of cleaning needed and saving on chemical usage.
Many ranges allow for double sided use providing an extension of a product’s life by 100% and reducing the
need to replace the entrance matting.
Over 90% of our electricity in our 12 plants comes from renewable sources.
Optimising a sample take back programme to reuse and recycle sample material.
Any yarn waste from our Coral production is reused by the yarn supplier.
The Coral manufacturing plant has achieved virtually zero landfill.
The aluminium scraper bars in our Nuway Tuftiguard and Grid
ranges are made from recycled aluminium.
Rubber or aluminium waste generated by the Nuway
production process is recycled. Rubber pips are sent to crown
bowling clubs for gully lining and other rubber waste is used in
equestrian centres.
The new Coral welcome range is based on Econyl yarn which
is produced using reprocessed industrial waste and post
consumer waste. Abandoned fishing nets are one of the
unlikely sources of waste material which go to make Econyl.
Reduce
Renewable
Reuse
Recycle
Our Nuway range was the first rigid entrance system to be
assessed by BREEAM. However, as no other manufacturer
has submitted a comparable product for certification, it’s not
possible to provide a BREEAM rating for Nuway.

6 7Introduction Introduction
Entrance Flooring Systems save money…
Research shows that up to 90% of the dirt entering a
building is brought in on the soles of shoes and the
tyres of wheeled traffic. This wet and dry soiling makes
interiors look dirty and unattractive, causes structural
damage to interior floor coverings and finishes and
creates unnecessary health and safety hazards.
If effective measures are not taken to avoid this problem,
the repair and maintenance costs of a typical floor
covering over its lifespan could be nine times the cost of
the original investment. A well designed entrance flooring
system will prevent dirt and moisture from being tracked
in and thereby prolong the life of interior flooring and
reduce cleaning, repair and overall maintenance costs.

Entrance flooring systems also have a critical
safety role to play. Slips, trips and falls made up
more than half of all reported major injuries in
2010/2011 (source: RIDDOR) causing suffering
and financial loss for individuals, companies and
society at large.
Wet and dry soiling can both create slip hazards but
by taking sensible decisions over flooring surfaces and
installing effective entrance matting the potential for
slipping can be dramatically reduced.
There are two major pieces of legislation/guidance
documents that affect the specification of EFS’s.
Equality Act 2010
British Standard 8300:2009 Design of Buildings
and their approaches to meet the needs of
disabled people – Code of practice
”…The ingress of soil and surface moisture to buildings,
or their transfer between adjacent internal areas,
should be reduced to the lowest practical level, e.g.
through the use of appropriate entrance matting
systems conforming to British Standard 7953…”
Loose lay mats and coir are advised against
British Standard 7953: 1999 Part 3.1
Guidance document
• Definition of an EFS
• The role of an EFS
• Product types
British Standard 8300:2009
Making entrances safe and accessible for all.
The British Standard states why we need an entrance
system and also what it’s role is.
The role of an entrance flooring system
British Standard 7953 Part 5.1
“The entrance flooring system should scrape, wipe
and retain soil, making contact with both feet of
people entering the building and, in the case of
wheeled traffic, with the circumference of the wheels.”
British Standard 7953: 1999 states that an EFS
is necessary in order to:
• Reduce the risk of slip injuries
• Prolong the life of the interior floor finish
• Reduce the cost of ongoing maintenance
Health and Safety and the Equality Act incorporating
the Disability Discrimination legislation imposes a
duty of care on those who own and manage public
buildings to prevent interior floor surfaces from
becoming hazardous.
The safety needs of the elderly, the infirm and those
with impairments must be given a high priority.
Floors must be kept clean, dry and safe and offer an
appropriate co-efficient of friction (slip-resistance) for
pedestrians and good wheel grip for wheel chair users.
6 metres of Coral can stop up to 90% of dirt and moisture
entering a building.
8 9IntroductionIntroduction
What do I need to consider?
Every entrance environment is unique so requirements
can vary greatly. Here are a few of the main points
that need to be considered when choosing an
entrance system:
Location
Do pedestrians approach the entrance from outside or from
another part of the building? Internal doorways leading
from factories, warehouses and workshops into adjoining
office areas usually require some type of barrier system, as
do many lift lobbies and side entrances.
Fire retardancy
Entrances often have a dual function as emergency exits,
in which case, it could be important to specify an entrance
system with fire retardant properties.
Configuration
How is the entrance area designed? Are there revolving,
sliding or traditional doors? Do people entering the building
follow the same route or disperse in different directions?
This could affect the layout of the entrance system
required.
Soil types
What type of soiling will your entrance flooring have to
deal with? Car parks, garage forecourts and loading bays
generate oily greasy deposits. High street shops need
entrance systems with high water absorbency. Fine sand
can be a problem for premises in coastal areas.
When planning your entrance system it is useful to
consider the entrance area in terms of zones. You can
then select the different types of matting required
to achieve an entrance flooring system that is fully
integrated into your design scheme:
Taking a ‘zoned’ approach
1 2 3
Environmental considerations
Do flooring products in the building have to meet certain
environmental requirements such as Building Research
Establishment (BRE) certification? Many of our Coral ranges
have been BREEAM certified.
Level of ‘traffic’
How much ‘punishment’ will your entrance flooring system
receive? The level of footfall and wheeled traffic will
determine the most suitable product. Just visit
www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/coral and use the Coral
calculator tool to find out more. The level of traffic will also
affect the choice of colour of the entrance mat.
Type of ‘traffic’
Are pedestrians the only building users or must your system
be able to cater for wheeled traffic? Entrance flooring in
airports, hospitals and hotels for instance will need to
withstand the weight and movement of vehicular traffic
and trolleys.
Potential for accidents?
What types of interior floor surfaces are to be protected? Is there
a history of slips and accidents? Do you ever need to rely on
additional ‘throw down’ mats? If your existing systems are
inadequate, don’t make the same mistakes next time. Visit the
Health and Safety Executive’s ‘Watch Your Step’website to
find out more. www.hse.gov.uk/watchyourstep
Aesthetics
Is it important to the specifier that the primary and
secondary entrance systems are colour co-ordinated?
This could impact on your choice of system.
The zone concept
External primary matting
Outside the building entrance,
primary matting is the first line of
defence against footborne soil,
scraping the coarsest dirt from the
soles of shoes before they cross the
threshold.
Internal primary matting
Immediately beyond the external
matting, internal primary matting
is required to remove footborne
moisture and finer particles of soil.
Internal secondary matting
Flooring leading away from the
entrance area – in the reception,
corridors etc – must be specifically
designed to withstand heavy traffic
and intensive cleaning regimes. They
will be prone to residual soiling and
will inevitably require a high level of
cleaning to maintain performance
and appearance.

Nuwaytuftiguard
Nuway tuftiguard
At the heart of the Nuway range, the standard
Tuftiguard entrance mat is the most widely used
rigid engineered entrance mat in the UK. It has the
durability, strength and structural integrity to deliver
excellent performance and appearance retention in
very heavy traffic locations and where high levels of
soil have to be removed from the soles of shoes and
wheeltreads.
Each Tuftiguard mat is assembled according to the
client’s individual specification using their chosen
combinations of aluminium (100% recycled), brass or
PVC scraper bars, and buffed or unbuffed prime rubber
and polyamide fibre composite wiper strips. These wiper
strips are offered in a wide range of colours, enabling the
Tuftiguard mat to be co-ordinated with a Coral clean off
system or other surrounding floor finishes.
The wiper bars and scraper strips are assembled in an
open or closed construction with high tensile electro
galvanised steel wire linkages running through the
components to give the mat its structural integrity and
superior load bearing capacity.
Linkages: High tensile steel linkages give the
system an engineered, constructional integrity.
Scraper bars:
As the name suggests scraper bars literally scrape
soil from the traffic crossing the entrance system.
Reversible:
Where the configuration of the entrance allows,
all Nuway tuftiguard and tuftiguard HD mats can
be reversed, effectively doubling their lifespan.
Wiper strips:
Prime rubber and polyamide fibre composite
provides optimum removal of dirt and moisture.
nuwaytuftiguard
Nuway tuftiguard
Height
Standard Tuftiguard mats incorporating aluminium
and PVC scraper bars are available in 12mm and
17mm heights to suit the size of the matwell. Mats
incorporating brass scraper bars are available in 17mm
height only.
Wiper strips
Tuftiguard wiper strips can be specified in both single
and double format. Double format offers twin wiper
strips to increase moisture absorption over a shorter
distance and enables more colour to be used to reflect
the interior colour scheme. If the Nuway entrance
system extends less than 3m into the building, we
recommend that a entrance with double wiper strips
is used.
Closed construction
A closed construction is suitable for both interior
and transitional areas. Soil removed from shoes and
wheeltreads is collected within the mat itself. The
gapless nature of the closed construction allows for
maximum use of coloured wiper strips to complement
interior design schemes.
Open construction
An open construction provides more storage capacity
for wet and dry soil and is therefore particularly
suitable for external use. Removed particles and
moisture can fall through the open sections in the mat
to be collected in the matwell.
Mix and match
As Tuftiguard is produced in modules to individual
specifications, a single section of matting may contain
any number of different combinations, including open
and closed constructions, single and double wiper
bars, unbuffed and buffed finishes, featuring any
combination of colours.
Tiles
Tuftiguard matting is also available in tile format.
50 x 50 cm entrance matting tiles are ideal for
multi-directional traffic flows and offer specifiers
an additional interesting design option.
For details of all options and technical
specifications, please see pages 39–41.

Considerations
As with all aluminium matting systems of this type,
in very brightly lit areas, the strong contrast between
a light aluminium scraper bar and a dark wiper strip
can sometimes create a strobe effect which should be
prevented. To avoid disorientating pedestrians affected
by this type of visual disturbance, consider using a less
contrasting wiper strip.
22 23
In railway stations and airports where baggage
handling and window cleaning vehicles circulate, in
retail outlets where heavy deliveries are moved on
wheeled vehicles and in warehouses and factories
where heavy loads are transported across the
threshold by forklift trucks, Nuway tuftiguard HD
entrance mats provide the very highest levels of
structural integrity.
The alumimium scraper bars have been designed with
a special ridged effect to provide an effective scraping
surface to remove dirt while also being smooth enough
for wheeled traffic to move easily.
Nuway tuftiguard HD
NuwaytuftiguardHD
Nuway tuftiguard HD is the ideal matting solution for
all internal and external entrance areas where heavy
duty loads and intense pedestrian and/or wheeled
traffic need to be catered for.
Nuway tuftiguard HD is manufactured using a patented
aluminium scraper bar to ensure that it’s the strongest
type of matting in the Nuway range, and possibly in the
UK. Tests by Staffordshire University have confirmed that
tuftiguard HD can withstand static loads of up to 900kg/cm2

compared with the maximum load of 200kg/cm2
for
standard Tuftiguard mats.

There are three different styles of Nuway tuftiguard HD mat to choose from.
All tuftiguard HD mats are offered with a closed construction in a choice of 12 or 17mm
heights and feature aluminium scraper bars. The standard tuftiguard HD plain mat,
which can be used outdoors, has unbuffed rubber wiper strips whilst the tuftiguard
HD classic mat, suitable for interior use only, has grey buffed pile wiper strips.
The tuftiguard HD design mat, also suitable for interior use only, offers more
opportunities for colour co-ordination as the wiper bars are offered in a choice of nine
standard colours.

Considerations
As with all aluminium matting systems of this type,
in very brightly lit areas, the strong contrast between
a light aluminium scraper bar and a dark wiper strip
can sometimes create a strobe effect which should be
prevented. To avoid disorientating pedestrians affected
by this type of visual disturbance, consider using a less
contrasting wiper strip.

nuwayconnect
Nuway connectNuway connect
Nuwayconnect
Nuway connect is a very versatile roll-up single sided
entrance system that’s easy to shape on site, making
it ideal for awkwardly shaped entrances.
With a wide choice of inserts, Nuway connect allows
the mat to be adapted to suit individual requirements.
Bristles can be used for exterior and interior entrances
to remove coarse dirt. Rubber inserts can be used for
interior and exterior use.
For the internal primary matting zone, Connect is
available with a choice of 6 Coral classic inserts allowing
the rigid entrance system to be colour co-ordinated
to matching Coral classic sheet product used in the
secondary matting zone. All three elements, Coral,
bristles and rubber, can be mixed and matched to create
the precise entrance system to meet your needs. All
inserts can also be replaced on site helping to extend the
wear life of the product.
Connect is also available in a wide choice of heights
from 10mm depth to 22mm and in open construction or
closed. Open construction Connect mats can be rolled
up for ease of cleaning of the matwell and the patented
product design ensures that the mat can only be rolled
inwardly, helping to prevent the bow wave that can
occur on other rollable products.
For those entrances in fire sensitive locations, Connect
with Coral inserts meets Bfl-S1 fire regulations.
Nuway connect is one of the most flexible single sided entrance mats available in
the UK. With a choice of 8 inserts, 3 heights and 2 constructions, a Nuway connect
mat can be precisely tailored to your individual requirements.

Different heights – different profiles
The appearance of the 10 mm depth Connect differs from the 17 and 22 mm versions as the width of the profile
of 10 mm Nuway connect is larger and therefore shows more aluminium.
Specials
Although Nuway connect is one of the most flexible
entrance systems available, there may still be times when
different colourways or constructions are needed.
Different colours are available at a small price premium
and there is also the possibility of adding anodised

In very brightly lit areas, the strong contrast between a light

Nuway site preparation and installation
Drainage
It is important to take provide accurate
measurements, mathematically scaled
diagrams or dimensionally stable templates
when ordering your Nuway mat. It is also
important to ensure that the site where the
mat is to be installed has been correctly
prepared. Matwell subfloors must be of
sound construction, dry, smooth and level.
Prior to installation the surface should be
clean and free from contamination. For
internal mat installations the screed should
be flat and level to accommodate the
depth of the chosen mat. For external mat
installations the screed should again be
flat and level to the depth of the frame, and
consideration must be given to drainage.
We are able to provide details of our
approved, nationwide network of
independent installation contractors who
are trained in every aspect of installing a
Nuway entrance flooring system for you.
*Note: PVC is temperature sensitive. When specifying entrance flooring for areas where
temperatures may increase, such as in glass atriums, beneath hot air blowers, in south facing
areas or within heat curtains, please contact the Support Team on 01773 740 688 for advice.

Considerations
In very brightly lit areas the strong contrast
between a light aluminium scraper bar and
a dark wiper strip can sometimes create a
strobe effect, which should be avoided. To
avoid disorientating pedestrians affected
by this type of visual disturbance consider
using a less contrasting insert.
To see full range of inserts, please refer to page 32.

The use of open construction entrance
systems is growing and when this is
coupled with a rollable product, the
cleaning of the matwell becomes much
easier. However, when an open mat is
in an external application and open to
adverse weather conditions, an appropriate
drainage system will be needed.

Recessed frames/installations
Nuway matwell frames are available in aluminium and
brass, and are designed to anchor into sand and cement
screeds for secure site installation. All frames are custom
built to fit specific site requirements, with curved
frames available to special order. The recommended
matwell depth is 18mm for all products except 12mm
Nuway tuftiguard. For these products we recommend a
matwell with 13mm depth.
Nuway frames are supplied in kit form for ease of
transport, storage and on-site assembly.
Measuring rectangular areas
The above example shows the dimensions that are
required for a rectangular matwell area. Dimensions should
always be taken from the internal frame face and clearly
marked on the layout plan as‘internal frame sizes’.
Measurements should include the relationship between
the door and the edge of the matwell. These dimensions
are critical as they determine where the T-bar joint strips
are to be positioned. Alternatively, T-bar positions can be
indicated on the drawing as required.

Key DOT = Direction of traffic
All Nuway mats are made to order, assembled in our Telford
plant to the client’s precise specification and template.
In simple, rectangular mats, it should be easy to measure
using the procedure below. For more complex and
unusually designed entrance areas, Forbo can provide help
with matwell measuring and templating. Please contact
your local Forbo business area manager to find out more.
L/R (left to right), diagonal and F/B (front to back)
dimensions are also required with the addition of a
midpoint measurement, this confirms if there are any
discrepancies in the frame i.e not straight.
Measure the depth of the matwell to ensure product
suitability. This dimension is taken from the matwell floor
to the top edge of the matwell frame. Direction of foot
traffic should also be highlighted on the layout plan with
an arrow showing DOT (direction of traffic).

Market leading performance
The cut pile construction of Coral textile products
enables dirt to be removed easily from the mat by
standard cleaning equipment ensuring optimal
performance.
As an addition to our core range we offer Coral logo, a
special service for those looking to make an impact by
personalising their entrance area with an impressive
company logo.
Whichever Coral product range is chosen, a
fully integrated colour co-ordinated entrance
area can be created, presenting a professional
and welcoming image to everyone entering the
building whilst silently and efficiently removing
footborne soil and moisture from their shoes and
helping to keep all interior floor surfaces clean, dry
and safe.
Today the Coral range offers more choice than
ever before with different types of clean-off
system to suit different applications, budgets and
aesthetic requirements.
At the heart of the collection is a core range of cut pile,
textile products upon which Coral has built its market
leadership and reputation. Each of these is designed
and manufactured to perform a specific cleaning
function. The final choice of product required for any
project will depend on the individual requirements of
the location, the type of soiling expected and whether
the Coral product is being used as the first or second
line of defence.
With many buildings having fire sensitive areas and
entrances also functioning as emergency fire exits, it’s
good to know that all Coral textile ranges are available
with fire retardant backings.

Coralgrip
To get the most out of your entrance flooring system it often pays to start
outside, scraping the soles of shoes and the treads of wheeled traffic before
they even cross the threshold, removing the largest particles of soil at the
earliest opportunity.
In these situations Coral grip is an ideal solution. A versatile non-woven clean-off
barrier mat that can be used both inside and outdoors, Grip prevents grit and
coarse dirt from entering the building, Grip HD has a patented embossed
design and durable, pliable vinyl filaments which perform a highly effective
scraping action.

Coral brush activ can be used in all types of entrance areas and is an ideal solution
when you need a textile entrance system that can simultaneously absorb moisture
and remove dry soiling. Independent research shows that Coral brush activ scores
highly on both counts.
Its unique construction consists of three types of yarn, each offering a different
benefit. Capillary yarns with their large surface area absorb moisture; active
scraping yarns help to brush the soil from shoes, and heavy duty textured yarns
help Coral brush activ to retain its good looks and withstand heavy pedestrian and
wheeled traffic.

Coralclassic
Coral classic has the capacity to absorb moisture like no other textile entrance
system. Research shows that after just two steps across Coral classic matting,
almost 50% of footborne moisture is absorbed.
Coral classic keeps all interior floor finishes beyond the entrance area clean and
dry. Where carpeting is concerned, moisture absorption is important from an
aesthetic point of view, particularly where light colours have been used. When
hard flooring is installed, moisture absorption doesn’t just prevent dirty footprints:
it becomes a critical health and safety requirement as it helps to prevent accidental
slipping and sliding. Alongside its excellent moisture absorbing properties, Coral
classic also has special scraping monofilament yarns which actively scrape dirt off
the soles of shoes.

Our search for new ways to reduce our
environmental impact has led us to work
very closely with forward thinking suppliers
who are able to incorporate ever higher
levels of recycled content in their materials.
The new Coral welcome range is an
excellent example of this approach as it
uses Econyl 100% recycled yarn which is
made using reprocessed industrial waste
and post consumer waste. Abandoned
fishing nets are one of the unlikely sources
of unwanted waste material which go to
make Econyl yarn.
G
In addition, the primary backing used in
Coral welcome is made from PET or
recycled pop bottles and it’s made in a
manufacturing plant that has achieved
virtually zero landfill.
With environmental credentials like these,
Coral welcome isn’t a conventional
entrance flooring system at all.

Coral T80:20
T80:20 has a luxurious twist pile wool/nylon mix for the optimum
combination of appearance, warmth and long lasting durability. The
wool yarn is highly absorbent, soaking up moisture from the soles
of shoes and reducing the potential for slips. Interspersed between
the tufts are thousands of sturdy monofilament fibres in every square
metre, performing a scraping action to remove particles of soil. The
multi-coloured pattern effectively disguises the soiling which can be
removed by cleaning.
Available in sheet and tile in a range of six lively colourways T80:20
provides an unobtrusive line of defence against tracked in soil and
moisture and protects other interior floor coverings.

Coral T32
Similar to T80:20 but with a cut pile, 60%
wool/40% nylon mix, T32 also provides an
unobtrusive barrier against footborne dirt
and moisture. Available in sheet format, T32
is offered in a choice of six colourways.
Both T80;20 and T32 sheet ranges have a
flame retardant backing as standard and
meet EN 13501 BflS1.
Coral T32 marine
This specially modified version of T32
meets all the fire safety standards set by the
International Maritime Organisation (IMO)
for products used in seagoing vessels. Yarn
and backing systems have been developed
to meet the stringent smoke toxicity and
low flame spread standards required to
achieve the IMO‘Wheelmark’. As a result
T32 Marine can be used with confidence in
cruise liners, passenger ferries, charter boats
and other seagoing vessels, in addition to
offshore facilities where the‘Wheelmark’
classification is required.

Coralluxe
With its rich pile height and luxurious appearance, Coral luxe may not
look like a traditional matting system, but it is in fact an ideal clean-off
solution for light to medium traffic areas where aesthetic appeal is a
top priority.
Particularly well suited to entrance lobbies, corridors and reception
areas, Coral luxe absorbs moisture from the soles of shoes and conceals
dirt within the pile. Because of its luxurious look and feel, this deceptive
soil and moisture barrier blends particularly well with other carpeted
areas of the building.

  • 3. 4 5EnvironmentEnvironment As a global leader in flooring systems we have a responsibility to all our stakeholders, to create a better environment. The way we serve and drive the market sets the pace and standard for world class flooring solutions. Sustainable development and ‘creating better environments’ are integral parts of all of Forbo Flooring Systems’ activities. We’re fully committed to reducing our impact upon the environment, not only in the way we run our manufacturing sites but also in terms of our actions and operations beyond the factory boundaries. We’ve adopted a cradle-to-grave approach in order to identify every possible opportunity to improve our use of scarce resources, eliminate waste, maximise efficiency and recycle and reuse materials. Creating better environments Our target To continuously minimise the environmental impact of Forbo Flooring Systems as measured by the weighted categories in our independently verified Life Cycle Assessment measurement system by 25% before the end of 2015 (cf 2009). Measurement Forbo uses Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as the independent methodology of measuring our impact on the environment. Based on LCA assessment we already out perform the industry average in resilient flooring categories. We shall succeed by applying Forbo’s 4 R’s: Recycle Reduce Renewable Reuse Here are some examples of how we’ve used the 4 R’s principle to implement responsible actions in our Entrance Flooring Systems portfolio. Installation of our entrance system products can stop up to 90% of dirt entering a building thereby reducing the amount of cleaning needed and saving on chemical usage. Many ranges allow for double sided use providing an extension of a product’s life by 100% and reducing the need to replace the entrance matting. Over 90% of our electricity in our 12 plants comes from renewable sources. Optimising a sample take back programme to reuse and recycle sample material. Any yarn waste from our Coral production is reused by the yarn supplier. The Coral manufacturing plant has achieved virtually zero landfill. The aluminium scraper bars in our Nuway Tuftiguard and Grid ranges are made from recycled aluminium. Rubber or aluminium waste generated by the Nuway production process is recycled. Rubber pips are sent to crown bowling clubs for gully lining and other rubber waste is used in equestrian centres. The new Coral welcome range is based on Econyl yarn which is produced using reprocessed industrial waste and post consumer waste. Abandoned fishing nets are one of the unlikely sources of waste material which go to make Econyl. Reduce Renewable Reuse Recycle Our Nuway range was the first rigid entrance system to be assessed by BREEAM. However, as no other manufacturer has submitted a comparable product for certification, it’s not possible to provide a BREEAM rating for Nuway. • 4. 6 7Introduction Introduction Entrance Flooring Systems save money… Research shows that up to 90% of the dirt entering a building is brought in on the soles of shoes and the tyres of wheeled traffic. This wet and dry soiling makes interiors look dirty and unattractive, causes structural damage to interior floor coverings and finishes and creates unnecessary health and safety hazards. If effective measures are not taken to avoid this problem, the repair and maintenance costs of a typical floor covering over its lifespan could be nine times the cost of the original investment. A well designed entrance flooring system will prevent dirt and moisture from being tracked in and thereby prolong the life of interior flooring and reduce cleaning, repair and overall maintenance costs. Sanitary 25% Flooring 60% Interior 15% The maintenance cost of buildings Moisture and dirt trapping CoralThe cost of floor coverings MaintenanceRepairsPurchase 90% of the maintenance cost is caused by walked-in dirt and mositure …and protect people and interiors Entrance flooring systems also have a critical safety role to play. Slips, trips and falls made up more than half of all reported major injuries in 2010/2011 (source: RIDDOR) causing suffering and financial loss for individuals, companies and society at large. Wet and dry soiling can both create slip hazards but by taking sensible decisions over flooring surfaces and installing effective entrance matting the potential for slipping can be dramatically reduced. There are two major pieces of legislation/guidance documents that affect the specification of EFS’s. Equality Act 2010 British Standard 8300:2009 Design of Buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people – Code of practice ”…The ingress of soil and surface moisture to buildings, or their transfer between adjacent internal areas, should be reduced to the lowest practical level, e.g. through the use of appropriate entrance matting systems conforming to British Standard 7953…” Loose lay mats and coir are advised against British Standard 7953: 1999 Part 3.1 Guidance document • Definition of an EFS • The role of an EFS • Product types British Standard 8300:2009 Making entrances safe and accessible for all. The British Standard states why we need an entrance system and also what it’s role is. The role of an entrance flooring system British Standard 7953 Part 5.1 “The entrance flooring system should scrape, wipe and retain soil, making contact with both feet of people entering the building and, in the case of wheeled traffic, with the circumference of the wheels.” British Standard 7953: 1999 states that an EFS is necessary in order to: • Reduce the risk of slip injuries • Prolong the life of the interior floor finish • Reduce the cost of ongoing maintenance Health and Safety and the Equality Act incorporating the Disability Discrimination legislation imposes a duty of care on those who own and manage public buildings to prevent interior floor surfaces from becoming hazardous. The safety needs of the elderly, the infirm and those with impairments must be given a high priority. Floors must be kept clean, dry and safe and offer an appropriate co-efficient of friction (slip-resistance) for pedestrians and good wheel grip for wheel chair users. 6 metres of Coral can stop up to 90% of dirt and moisture entering a building.
  • 5. 8 9IntroductionIntroduction What do I need to consider? Every entrance environment is unique so requirements can vary greatly. Here are a few of the main points that need to be considered when choosing an entrance system: Location Do pedestrians approach the entrance from outside or from another part of the building? Internal doorways leading from factories, warehouses and workshops into adjoining office areas usually require some type of barrier system, as do many lift lobbies and side entrances. Fire retardancy Entrances often have a dual function as emergency exits, in which case, it could be important to specify an entrance system with fire retardant properties. Configuration How is the entrance area designed? Are there revolving, sliding or traditional doors? Do people entering the building follow the same route or disperse in different directions? This could affect the layout of the entrance system required. Soil types What type of soiling will your entrance flooring have to deal with? Car parks, garage forecourts and loading bays generate oily greasy deposits. High street shops need entrance systems with high water absorbency. Fine sand can be a problem for premises in coastal areas. When planning your entrance system it is useful to consider the entrance area in terms of zones. You can then select the different types of matting required to achieve an entrance flooring system that is fully integrated into your design scheme: Taking a ‘zoned’ approach 1 2 3 Environmental considerations Do flooring products in the building have to meet certain environmental requirements such as Building Research Establishment (BRE) certification? Many of our Coral ranges have been BREEAM certified. Level of ‘traffic’ How much ‘punishment’ will your entrance flooring system receive? The level of footfall and wheeled traffic will determine the most suitable product. Just visit www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/coral and use the Coral calculator tool to find out more. The level of traffic will also affect the choice of colour of the entrance mat. Type of ‘traffic’ Are pedestrians the only building users or must your system be able to cater for wheeled traffic? Entrance flooring in airports, hospitals and hotels for instance will need to withstand the weight and movement of vehicular traffic and trolleys. Potential for accidents? What types of interior floor surfaces are to be protected? Is there a history of slips and accidents? Do you ever need to rely on additional ‘throw down’ mats? If your existing systems are inadequate, don’t make the same mistakes next time. Visit the Health and Safety Executive’s ‘Watch Your Step’website to find out more. www.hse.gov.uk/watchyourstep Aesthetics Is it important to the specifier that the primary and secondary entrance systems are colour co-ordinated? This could impact on your choice of system. The zone concept External primary matting Outside the building entrance, primary matting is the first line of defence against footborne soil, scraping the coarsest dirt from the soles of shoes before they cross the threshold. Internal primary matting Immediately beyond the external matting, internal primary matting is required to remove footborne moisture and finer particles of soil. Internal secondary matting Flooring leading away from the entrance area – in the reception, corridors etc – must be specifically designed to withstand heavy traffic and intensive cleaning regimes. They will be prone to residual soiling and will inevitably require a high level of cleaning to maintain performance and appearance.

  • 10. 18 19 Nuwaytuftiguard Nuway tuftiguard At the heart of the Nuway range, the standard Tuftiguard entrance mat is the most widely used rigid engineered entrance mat in the UK. It has the durability, strength and structural integrity to deliver excellent performance and appearance retention in very heavy traffic locations and where high levels of soil have to be removed from the soles of shoes and wheeltreads. Each Tuftiguard mat is assembled according to the client’s individual specification using their chosen combinations of aluminium (100% recycled), brass or PVC scraper bars, and buffed or unbuffed prime rubber and polyamide fibre composite wiper strips. These wiper strips are offered in a wide range of colours, enabling the Tuftiguard mat to be co-ordinated with a Coral clean off system or other surrounding floor finishes. The wiper bars and scraper strips are assembled in an open or closed construction with high tensile electro galvanised steel wire linkages running through the components to give the mat its structural integrity and superior load bearing capacity. Linkages: High tensile steel linkages give the system an engineered, constructional integrity. Scraper bars: As the name suggests scraper bars literally scrape soil from the traffic crossing the entrance system. Reversible: Where the configuration of the entrance allows, all Nuway tuftiguard and tuftiguard HD mats can be reversed, effectively doubling their lifespan. Wiper strips: Prime rubber and polyamide fibre composite provides optimum removal of dirt and moisture. nuwaytuftiguard Nuway tuftiguard Height Standard Tuftiguard mats incorporating aluminium and PVC scraper bars are available in 12mm and 17mm heights to suit the size of the matwell. Mats incorporating brass scraper bars are available in 17mm height only. Wiper strips Tuftiguard wiper strips can be specified in both single and double format. Double format offers twin wiper strips to increase moisture absorption over a shorter distance and enables more colour to be used to reflect the interior colour scheme. If the Nuway entrance system extends less than 3m into the building, we recommend that a entrance with double wiper strips is used. Closed construction A closed construction is suitable for both interior and transitional areas. Soil removed from shoes and wheeltreads is collected within the mat itself. The gapless nature of the closed construction allows for maximum use of coloured wiper strips to complement interior design schemes. Open construction An open construction provides more storage capacity for wet and dry soil and is therefore particularly suitable for external use. Removed particles and moisture can fall through the open sections in the mat to be collected in the matwell. Mix and match As Tuftiguard is produced in modules to individual specifications, a single section of matting may contain any number of different combinations, including open and closed constructions, single and double wiper bars, unbuffed and buffed finishes, featuring any combination of colours. Tiles Tuftiguard matting is also available in tile format. 50 x 50 cm entrance matting tiles are ideal for multi-directional traffic flows and offer specifiers an additional interesting design option. For details of all options and technical specifications, please see pages 39–41. • 12. 22 23 In railway stations and airports where baggage handling and window cleaning vehicles circulate, in retail outlets where heavy deliveries are moved on wheeled vehicles and in warehouses and factories where heavy loads are transported across the threshold by forklift trucks, Nuway tuftiguard HD entrance mats provide the very highest levels of structural integrity. The alumimium scraper bars have been designed with a special ridged effect to provide an effective scraping surface to remove dirt while also being smooth enough for wheeled traffic to move easily. Nuway tuftiguard HD NuwaytuftiguardHD Nuway tuftiguard HD is the ideal matting solution for all internal and external entrance areas where heavy duty loads and intense pedestrian and/or wheeled traffic need to be catered for. Nuway tuftiguard HD is manufactured using a patented aluminium scraper bar to ensure that it’s the strongest type of matting in the Nuway range, and possibly in the UK. Tests by Staffordshire University have confirmed that tuftiguard HD can withstand static loads of up to 900kg/cm2 compared with the maximum load of 200kg/cm2 for standard Tuftiguard mats. Linkages: High tensile steel linkages give the system an engineered, constructional integrity. Scraper bars: As the name suggests scraper bars literally scrape soil from the traffic crossing the entrance system. Wiper strips: Prime rubber and polyamide fibre composite provides optimum removal of dirt and moisture. For technical information please turn to pages 39 – 41. nuwaytuftiguardHD Nuway tuftiguard HD 23 Reversible: Where the configuration of the entrance allows, all Nuway tuftiguard and tuftiguard HD mats can be reversed, effectively doubling their lifespan. With a wide choice of inserts, Nuway connect allows the mat to be adapted to suit individual requirements. Bristles can be used for exterior and interior entrances to remove coarse dirt. Rubber inserts can be used for interior and exterior use. For the internal primary matting zone, Connect is available with a choice of 6 Coral classic inserts allowing the rigid entrance system to be colour co-ordinated to matching Coral classic sheet product used in the secondary matting zone. All three elements, Coral, bristles and rubber, can be mixed and matched to create the precise entrance system to meet your needs. All inserts can also be replaced on site helping to extend the wear life of the product. Connect is also available in a wide choice of heights from 10mm depth to 22mm and in open construction or closed. Open construction Connect mats can be rolled up for ease of cleaning of the matwell and the patented product design ensures that the mat can only be rolled inwardly, helping to prevent the bow wave that can occur on other rollable products. For those entrances in fire sensitive locations, Connect with Coral inserts meets Bfl-S1 fire regulations. Nuway connect is one of the most flexible single sided entrance mats available in the UK. With a choice of 8 inserts, 3 heights and 2 constructions, a Nuway connect mat can be precisely tailored to your individual requirements. Nuway technical specifications 47 Nuway site preparation and installation Drainage It is important to take provide accurate measurements, mathematically scaled diagrams or dimensionally stable templates when ordering your Nuway mat. It is also important to ensure that the site where the mat is to be installed has been correctly prepared. Matwell subfloors must be of sound construction, dry, smooth and level. Prior to installation the surface should be clean and free from contamination. For internal mat installations the screed should be flat and level to accommodate the depth of the chosen mat. For external mat installations the screed should again be flat and level to the depth of the frame, and consideration must be given to drainage. We are able to provide details of our approved, nationwide network of independent installation contractors who are trained in every aspect of installing a Nuway entrance flooring system for you. *Note: PVC is temperature sensitive. When specifying entrance flooring for areas where temperatures may increase, such as in glass atriums, beneath hot air blowers, in south facing areas or within heat curtains, please contact the Support Team on 01773 740 688 for advice. All frames are custom built to fit specific site requirements, with curved frames available to special order. The recommended matwell depth is 18mm for all products except 12mm Nuway tuftiguard. For these products we recommend a matwell with 13mm depth. Nuway frames are supplied in kit form for ease of transport, storage and on-site assembly. Measuring rectangular areas The above example shows the dimensions that are required for a rectangular matwell area. Dimensions should always be taken from the internal frame face and clearly marked on the layout plan as‘internal frame sizes’. Measurements should include the relationship between the door and the edge of the matwell. These dimensions are critical as they determine where the T-bar joint strips are to be positioned. Alternatively, T-bar positions can be indicated on the drawing as required. 49Nuway matwell measuring Nuwaymatwellmeasuring Nuway accessoriesMatwell measuring AMF 253 6mm 6.5mm 26mm 25mm 31.5mm AMF 346 6mm 6.5mm 31.5mm 26mm AMF 266 6mm 6mm 44mm 50mm 50mm AMF 506 21mm 16mm 3mm 13mm 3mm AMF 163 16mm 21mm 3mm 18mm 3mm AMF 213 Nuway cable There is a further range of ramps and frames available specifically for Nuway cable. Research shows that after just two steps across Coral classic matting, almost 50% of footborne moisture is absorbed. Coral classic keeps all interior floor finishes beyond the entrance area clean and dry. Where carpeting is concerned, moisture absorption is important from an aesthetic point of view, particularly where light colours have been used. When hard flooring is installed, moisture absorption doesn’t just prevent dirty footprints: it becomes a critical health and safety requirement as it helps to prevent accidental slipping and sliding. Alongside its excellent moisture absorbing properties, Coral classic also has special scraping monofilament yarns which actively scrape dirt off the soles of shoes. 4722 caribbean blue 4706 terra G 4730 raven black 4721 mouse grey 4727 navy blue 4701 anthracite 4710 metal blue 4736 pumpkin 4744 espresso 4714 granite Coral classic coralclassic Please note: Digital representations may vary from the actual product. Our search for new ways to reduce our environmental impact has led us to work very closely with forward thinking suppliers who are able to incorporate ever higher levels of recycled content in their materials. The new Coral welcome range is an excellent example of this approach as it uses Econyl 100% recycled yarn which is made using reprocessed industrial waste and post consumer waste. Abandoned fishing nets are one of the unlikely sources of unwanted waste material which go to make Econyl yarn. G In addition, the primary backing used in Coral welcome is made from PET or recycled pop bottles and it’s made in a manufacturing plant that has achieved virtually zero landfill.
