SIMULATING EXPERIENCES
WHAT IT IS:
When being in-context with participants is
not feasible, it becomes valuable to run
activities that get them into the mindset of
the real experience of using the product or
service. These activities enact and enable
users to feel like what they are doing is the
real thing.
WHY IS IT VALUABLE:
• Simulating real-life situations helps users
give more empathetic and directed feedback
on the product or service
• Can move tangible design work more
quickly into more rigorous evaluative testing
WHEN TO USE IT:
This activity should be used when you have a
product concept and narrative that you
would like to ground in a person’s lived
experience.
EXAMPLE: frog was tasked to look at new technologies and changing customer behaviors and
expectations of the future in-car experience. We designed in-car prototypes as provocations
and then simulated experiences with new and first time drivers to kickstart conversations about
what their needs were and how they’d intersect with new technological solutions. The users
were able to provide rich, valuable feedback.
