1. “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear
nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God,
He is the One who goes with you. He will not
leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
Be Strong and Courageous
38. and where is the fury of the oppressor?
But I am the Lord your God, Who divided the sea whose waves roared –
the Lord of hosts is His Name.
And I have put My Words in your mouth…” Isaiah 51:12 – 15
42. There are legitimate fears, which caution us, sharpen
our senses and warn us of the dangers
of pain, crippling injury and death.
43. Such reasonable fears, either for ourselves
or for others, are put there by God
to preserve life and limb, to keep us from extreme
recklessness, walking too close to the edge of a cliff,
driving too fast in dangerous conditions,
warning our children of dangerous behaviour.
44. Wearing helmets on bicycles and motorbikes, wearing seat belts in cars,
keeping to speed limits and carefully observing traffic signs,
reducing speed when visibility is impaired, or the road is wet,
are wise responses to legitimate fear.
Love of life and family is God given – but never at any price.
45. As God commanded Joshua:
“Be strong
and of good courage…
only be strong
and very courageous,
that you may observe
to do according to
all the Law
which Moses
My servant
commanded you;
46. do not turn from it to
the right hand
or to the left,
that you may prosper
wherever you go.
47. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth,
that you shall mediate in it day and night,
that you may observe to do according to all
that is written in it.
48. For then you will make
your way prosperous,
and then you will have
good success.
Have I not commanded
you? Be strong and of
good courage;
do not be afraid,
nor dismayed,
for the Lord your God
is with you
wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:6 – 9
49. As Swiss Reformer,
Ulrich Zwingli declared:
“They can kill the
body – but they
cannot kill the soul.”
50. “Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid nor dismayed…
for there are more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh;
but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.”
2 Chronicles 32:7 – 8
51. “You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that
flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the
destruction that lays waste at noon day… for He shall give His angels
charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.” Psalm 91:5 – 11
52. “I called on the Lord
in my distress;
the Lord
answered me…
I will not fear.
What can man do
to me?
It is better to trust in
the Lord
than to put confidence
in man.
It is better to trust in
the Lord than to put
confidence in princes.”
Psalm 118:5 – 9
53. At Milton High School, in Bulawayo, I was taught Rudyard
Kipling's inspiring poem on courage and integrity. Kipling stated
that this was modelled on the life and character of Rhodesia's
Chief Justice and Administrator, Leander Star Jameson:
Courage and Integrity
54. "If you can keep your head
when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
IF
55. If you can
trust yourself
when all men
doubt you, but
make allowance
for their doubting
too.
56. If you can wait but not be tired by waiting,
or being lied about not deal in lies,
57. or being hated don't give way to hating,
and yet don't look too good nor talk too wise.
58. If you can dream and yet not make dreams your master,
59. If you can think and not make thoughts your aim,
81. Like German Reformer, Martin Luther, who dared to defy the collective
might of the Pope of Rome and the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire
when he refused their threats and demands to recant, we need to be
able to say: “My conscience is captive to the Word of God…
Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise, so help me God. Amen.”
82. “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear
nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God,
He is the One who goes with you. He will not
leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
85. WILL YOUR ANCHOR HOLD
IN THE STORMS OF LIFE?
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul,
firm and secure.”
Hebrews 6:19
86. 1. Will your anchor hold in the storms of life?
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife;
When the strong tides lift and the cables
strain,
Will your anchor fail, or firm remain?
Chorus: We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll: Fastened
to the Rock which cannot move, Grounded firm
and deep in the Saviour’s love!
87. 2. It is safely moored, ‘twill the storm
withstand,
For ‘tis well secured by the Saviour’s hand;
And the cables passed from His heart to
mine,
Can defy the blast, through strength Divine.
Chorus: We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll: Fastened
to the Rock which cannot move, Grounded firm
and deep in the Saviour’s love!
88. 3. It will firmly hold in the straits of fear,
When the breakers roar the reef is near,
Though the tempest rave and the wild winds
blow,
Not an angry wave shall our bark o’erflow.
Chorus: We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll: Fastened
to the Rock which cannot move, Grounded firm
and deep in the Saviour’s love!
89. 4. It will surely hold in the floods of death,
When the waters cold, chill our latest
breath,
On the rising tide, it can never fail,
While our hopes abide within the veil!
Chorus: We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll:
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love!
90. 5. When your eyes behold, through the
gathering night,
The City of gold, our harbour bright,
We shall anchor fast by the Heavenly shore,
Where life's storms are past for evermore.
Chorus: We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll:
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love!
91.
92. “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I
fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom
shall I be afraid… though an army may encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear; though war may arise against me,
in this I will be confident.” Psalm 27:1 – 3
