This document discusses the concept of hyper natural objects (HNOs). HNOs blend the physical and digital worlds through integrated sensors, software, networks and physical forms. They do not mimic reality but overlap different information and behavior layers. The first tool capable of powering HNOs is the iPad. HNOs have souls distributed over networks and redefine their host tools to enable new user experiences. They allow more direct interaction than mediated interfaces and contextualize sensor data. The document envisions a future where reality and augmented reality are indistinguishable and introduces a prototype HNO called the Hyper Natural Pad.

7. A desk and its representation.
Graphic interfaces are the
metaphor for navigating the
information.
The interfaces mediate the
manipulation of the
information on behalf of
human beings.
The most noted of
metaphors is that of the
computer desktop.

9. We pushed forward the mimetic imitation of
reality. Such an imitation, just as any imitation, even
if “perfect” is perceived as alien and “rejected” and
considered “ineffective” in the long term.

16. Hyper Natural Object
The HNO overlap through layers of information,
software layers, behavior layers, and physical layers
that are responsive to real objects.
THEY DO NOT MIMIC them.
The iPad is the first tool capable of distributing
Hyper Natural Objects.

17. What defines a
Hyper Natural Object?
1.
Hyper Natural Objects have a soul (app) that
is diffused over the network.
2.
That “turn over and re-invent” the tool that
accepts it (e.g. iPad) so well to enable it to
“interpret” a specific user experience (UX),
stratifying itself on other comparable pre-existing
usage habits

special relationship with human beings
that become “a part of” the “body” of
the tool (e.g. iPad)

They listen, track and contextualize every single
