3. Born in 1918 in Qumbu, Umtata. By the age of seven he went to school, where he was named Nelson by his teacher.
4. His father died soon, after that Mandela went to study in Fort Beaufort. He got into Law School in Fort Hare University. But he couldn’t end his graduation there, since he got involved with a students movement against the university politics and was expelled. Then he went to Johanesburg, where he ended his course through mail.
5. Nelson Mandela used to believe in a non-violent revolution, but that was only until a massacre in Sharpeville in 1960, when South African police shot black demonstrators, killing 69 and wounding 180 people. That’s when he agreed with the use of weapons.
6. He was the leader of the sabotage campaign against the militar targets and the government and traveled to Argelia for paramilitar training. In 1962 Mandela was arrested after CIA tipped South Africa police. He was condemned to five years of prison for travelling illegally abroad and encouraging strikes. In 1964 he was doomed to perpetual prison for sabotaging (which he admitted) and for conspiring to help other countries to invade South Africa (which he denies).
7. Even while he was arrested, he was known as an anti-apartheid symbol. In 1990, after 27 years in jail, the National African Congress campaign and the international pressure made the president Frederik Willem Klerk release him, when he was already 72 years old.
8. He awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Nelson Mandela was elected South Africa president in 1994.
