  1. 1. Security Guards 1 A hospital security guard is deployed for the protection of hospitals or health clinics. The security personnel in the hospital must acknowledge the complex environment and the presented challenges. The specific roles and responsibilities may vary depending on the size of the facility, and services.
  2. 2. Security guards: protect people, property and information  To satisfactorily undertake these responsibilities, a security guard must  understand the importance of the position and  the general duties that a Security Guard may be asked to play on a day to day basis. 2 However, the security team in the hospital perform the following duties; •Patient/ Customer service •Access control •Traffic control •Internal and External monitoring •Emergency response •Physical intervention & public safety •Surveillance and investigation •VIP escort and protection

  4. 4. ROLE OF SECURITY GUARD  Role of Security Guard to protect people, property and info.  They are responsible to a variety of people: To the employer. As a Security Guard, you have a responsibility to your employer for the security and protection of property. This involves:  The responsibility to make every effort to ensure premises and property are protected in an appropriate and effective fashion against a variety of natural and man-made threats;  Preventing, detecting and reacting appropriately; and  The obligation to perform these duties in a way that enables the client to have confidence that they will not 4
  5. 5. ROLE OF SECURITY GUARD To the public To the public. Security is normally assigned the duty of protecting the public from loss or injury. This includes:  A responsibility to interact with customers politely.  Showing good behavior  Responding to all queries responsibly and guiding patients/attendants  Showing empathy  Provide help if required  Escalate to manager in any emergency 5
  6. 6. ROLE OF SECURITY GUARD To Yourself  To Yourself. A Security Guard should recognize that he or she is a professional and is involved in a position that involves tremendous responsibility.  Often security is responsible for protecting hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars of property and equipment.  Consequently, the guard must act in a serious and responsible manner during the performance of his or her duties. 6
  7. 7. OBSERVE, DETER, RECORD AND REPORT  A security guard’s primary responsibility is to “provide protection”, to personnel, property and information.  The days of a security guard acting tough or as a bouncer, enforcing the peace on a work site through force and intimidation, are past.  The majority of tasks assigned require a Security Guard to observe, deter, record and report only.  Police officers may rely on the status of their position, their uniform, extensive specialized training, and weapons to control situations in which there is some risk of being assaulted.  Security guards do not have these advantages and are far better advised to watch what is going on, take notes, and contact the police, if necessary. 7
  8. 8. DETER AND DETECT CRIME:  Presence: deter most criminals from doing something illegal on your site.  If someone does try to commit a crime, you should respond according to the protocol the Client wishes you to follow.  Not all clients want people charged or the Police called.  The response will be predetermined by the client and the security company.  Be aware of what your Post Orders require you to do.  If you do call the police, be able to give them valuable information.  This help them catch the criminals or stop the crime while it is happening.  Carefully make notes to remember as many details of the crime as possible.  It is important at all times to work to build good relations with the police.  Together with your local police force, you form a security team.  Know exactly what you are allowed to do and what not under the law.  The main duty in all situations are to observe, deter, record and report. 8
  9. 9. THE SECURITY OF PEOPLE Crowd control  Crowd control: When disturbances occur it becomes the responsibility of police, and in some cases that of a security guard, to control a crowd or restore order.  Crowds that have been allowed to get out of hand through inadequate supervision, in spite of the best efforts by guards to prevent a disturbance, make the task of restoring order or protecting life and/or property a tremendous responsibility.  To restore peace or control situation have in mind:  the risk to life and/or property whether or not action is taken;  the personal risk to the Security Guard;  instructions of the guard’s supervisor or the client;  risks posed by leaving the post;  availability of support or backup;  urgency; and  development of tactics or plans for dealing with the situation. 9
  10. 10. THE SECURITY OF PEOPLE Work accident prevention  Work accident prevention: Accidents at work represent potential personal injury, loss of productivity and eventually profit stability.  Be aware of potential danger zones risk to employees and public on site.  Guards should exercise a helpful and observant role in the interests of others on the work site.  Warn people of potential hazards to encounter while on the premises.  If the risk factor is high, the client should consider having the guard escort people through the danger zone under restricted access until the danger has passed.  Guards to have safety inspection checklist that covers the particular hazards of their workplace.  Guards use their common sense and look for items not on the checklist that hold the potential to cause accidents or injury.  Guards should on time report safety hazards and then follow through by taking steps they are directed to minimize the risk posed to people on site.  Accidents which cause major injures only take a split second to happen and have consequences that can last a lifetime.  It may only take a few moments to reduce the number of situations in which injuries may occur. 10
  11. 11. Hospital specific threats and hazards  The security staff should aware of the threat and hazards that impact the hospital’s operational capabilities; the security threats to the hospital may vary in consequences, likelihood, and risk. If the following threats occur, may cause major disruptions to the health care provider • Fire • Breach of information security & patient confidentiality • Theft of medicinal supplies or equipment • Abduction of children or babies • Sabotage of life support equipment • Contamination of food or water supplies  To mitigate these risk requires the balance on the strong security policy and procedures, monitoring and surveillance systems and vigilance of the security guards, 11
