The table looks at the most successful publishers in the current month and app store, on the global and local level. The publishers are ranked by
the number of downloads their apps generate per month. Each publisher is ranked in the local or the global context: To assign the Country Rank
Xyologic sums up all downloads of all apps distributed by the publisher in current country. To assign the Global Rank Xyologic sums all the apps
distributed by the publisher worldwide. The more downloads a publisher's portfolio generates, the higher her position in the top 100 list.

The table looks at the most popular apps in a month in an app store. Since free apps typically generate many more downloads then paid apps, the
report provides separate tables for 150 top free and top 150 paid apps. Apps are ranked by the number of downloads they generate - the more
downloads in a month, the higher the position in the rank.

The table looks at the distribution of the most popular apps in various categories, and gives an understanding of what kind of content is most
popular among users. It takes the top 150 most downloaded apps and looks to which categories they belong. Since the category distribution is
different for top paid and top free apps, the report provides separate tables for top 150 free and 150 paid apps.

12. Use this Report to Answer Specific Questions
This report not only gives you an overview of an app store ecosystem in a country, but can be used to answer many specific questions. It provides a
lot of unique data and information generated from our app store search engine that are not available elsewhere, such as:
download numbers (for paid and free apps, per category and per publisher), information about locally relevant apps in a specific geographical
region, lists of new apps, as well as information on monetization and revenue models. You can use this information to answer questions such as:
What are the chances of my app to get a position in the Top 25 apps in an app store - how many downloads do I need?
You will find two excellent indicators of app store dynamics in this report:
I. The "Previous position" column in the Top 150 Most Downloaded Apps tables. If many apps in this column are marked as NEW,
the app store is very dynamic, with many new players coming in each month. This will mean also that the chances that your app will
get noticed by the users are higher. If only few apps are marked as NEW, the app store is dominated by strong well established
publishers.
II. The "Downloads" column in the Top 150 Most Downloaded Apps tables. It will give you an idea how many downloads your app
needs to generate monthly to reach a position in app store ranks.
Worldwide hits such as Facebook or Angry Birds occupy top positions in my app store. How do I know what apps are most
relevant to a regional audience in my local market, and which publishers are important in my country?
To find the answer use the Is Local column which lets you identify most important apps in a particular country. The "Is Local" value is set to YES
when more than 50% of all downloads of an app were generated in one country (or 75% in case of the USA). By following this indicator you will
identify most successful local publishers and local apps.

13. How much money can I make on my app? How much revenue is made by the most popular apps?
To understand the revenue range made by top apps monetized in pay-per-download model, simply multiply numbers from Downloads column by
the Price. Understanding revenues made by apps monetized in in-app purchase model is more complicated and requires more data and analysis.
Xyologic publishes a separate report on this topic. This report, however, will also give you an indication since download numbers correlate with the
revenues made on in-app purchases.
Which monetization models are the most popular among the most successful apps?
Use the Monetization Type column to find out which apps use what revenue models, and what models are most frequently adapted by most
successful publishers and apps. For iPhone and iPad you will find columns where apps are marked as paid, as in-app purchase, or as a combination
of both. For Windows Phone 7 you will find additionally apps offering a trial version which can be unlocked to premium from within the app. By
looking at this column you can easily find out what models are most popular in top 150 most downloaded apps, and also in which categories.

Why are Xyologic top lists and rankings more reliable and more useful than those published by the app
stores?
The main indicator of an app or publisher's success is the number of downloads. Specifically, it is an indicator for the number of times an app was
installed on user devices, and therefore of its popularity. Unlike app store rankings, Xyologic is using the download numbers as the driving
indicator in constructing the rankings in our reports. While most app stores publish their "top lists" (e.g. Top 25 in Apple AppStore or BlackBerry
AppWorld, or Top Paid / Top Free in Google Android Market), those lists are actually curated by the app store owners, and the rules applied to
create those rankings are not transparent nor disclosed to the public. For example: Apple’s Top 25 is adjusted to drive sales and improve
discoverability of new apps, and the curators choose which apps dominate the list. It may be good for the user, but at the same time it makes the
ranking less suitable for research. As a different example: Android Market does not consider local biases when creating their Top Free / Paid list,
but uses only total numbers to reflect the global context only. This way a US consumer can find in a top list an app from China or France, and a
researcher will not find any information about performance of apps in particular geographical market.
Due to the reasons described above the top lists and rankings created by app stores are not suitable for research purposes. In contrast to this
Xyologic provides reliable lists based on hard numbers, created and adjusted for the community. Xyologic uses a unified ranking algorithm
